2. Oviduct
Also called fallopian tubes
A pair of convoluted tubes (from near theovaries to the tips of the uterine horns)
The functions are (see lecture before) Consists three distinct layers:
The outer layer: tunica serosa(connectivetissue)
The middle layer: tunica muscularis(circularand longitudinal smooth muscle bers)
The innermost layer: tunica mucosa(ciliatedand secretory epithelial cells)

Oviduct, !"#h!l!$%
Length: 20 !0 cm "ivided into ! segments:
Infundibulum: funnel shape opening near theovary (mucosal cells are ciliated)
Ampula: middle segment# ! $ cm %# half oftotal length of oviduct& 20 '0 longitudinal
folds Isthmus: 0#$ cm %# thicer smooth muscle
layer than ampula# ' * mucosal folds& moresecretory than ciliated cells+
Ampullary,isthmic,-uction: delays the ovum
several hours during transport& site offertili.ation Utero-tubal-junction(/T): short segment
bet1een oviduct and uterus+ viduct is stimulated by estrogen and inhibited
by progestins

9a-or function: retain and nourishof embryo or fetus
roduces uterine milksecreted by
glands in the mucosal layer (asnutrients for the embryo beforeattachment to uterus)
After implantation# placenta playsthose important role (nutrients and1aste)

3ndometrium provides amechanism for attachment of thee4traembryonic membranes+
This union forms placenta placentation

are 0 20 cotldn attachments in latepregnancy of co1# ** 65 in e1es and does+
b. Difuse #surface) attachment (so1# mare): 34traembryonic membrane lie in folds on the

/terus# Type of placental attachment:
$pitheliochorial (so1# co1# mare): no erosion inboth of endemetrium and e4tra embryonicmembrane during placenta formation (nutrients andmaternal blood must pass through both maernal and e4tra embryonictissue to reach embryonic blood)
!ndesmochorial(e1e# doe): erosion in the
epithelial layer of endometrium %emochorial(huma# primates): e4tension
erosion in the epithelial of endometrium(nutrients form maternal blood must passthrough only e4traembryoic tissue layers to
reach fetal blood)+ %emoendothelial(rabbits): no e4tensive erosion
in both e4traembryonic membrane andepithelial layer of endometrium
