DAVID BAZANSTRANGE NEGOTIATIONS

bark113 CD/LP+MP3

barsuk records

STREET DATE: MAY 24, 2011

David Bazan was, for many years, the songwriter and driving force behind the acclaimed indie band Pedro the Lion, building a dedicated following and selling a couple hundred-thousand albums based in large part on his extraordinary melodic sense and erudite, theologically-themed songs. After a decade helming the project, he found himself embroiled in a major personal philosophical and spiritual cataclysm, wrapped in a growing drinking problem. Bazan got to work exorcizing both his demons and angels, ditching the Pedro moniker in favor of his given name and producing two incredible pieces of work in the Fewer Moving Parts EP and the 2009 full-length Curse Your Branches (Barsuk).

Branches is considered by many to be a legitimate masterpiece. Charting Bazan’s increasingly skeptical struggle with the precepts of the evangelical Christian world in which he was raised, the album covers some pretty serious ground. NPR called it “an album of great music and great humanity.” Strange Negotiations focuses Bazan’s energies toward the external, centering on his disappointment in the current state of accelerating American and global social fragmentation.

Musically, most of Strange Negotiations sounds like a great rock band playing songs they’re beyond intimate with. It’s the first full-length he’s recorded with a band – the same band with which he toured relentlessly in support of Curse Your Branches.

Street Date: 05/24/11Re-drawing and blurring the lines between psychedelia and sci-fi, between art and entertainment, between sound design and melody, Amon Tobin has created the finest, most intense work of his very considerable career, an extension and refinement of everything he has achieved thus far, a crowning achievement in the process that he describes as “re-ordering the things around me.”

Tobin’s earliest work, in his own words, “took bits of existing music from old records and tried to find new contexts for them.” This led to albums like “Bricolage” and “Supermodified” (the clues being in the titles). Gradually, though, the samples “got smaller and smaller and more processed until they became less about context or reference and more like a physical reincarnation of sounds.” This led to the next stage in Tobin’s development, his last album, “Foley Room,” where he followed a Cage-ian tack and “looked at all sounds as potentially musical,” ending up using his own field recordings of lions, wolves, bees, factories and so on. With “ISAM” Amon started with field recordings but then synthesized the sounds and built them into actual playable instruments. With these instruments he then created the album. “It’s by far the most exciting development in my personal quest for some control over nature,” Tobin explains. “Anything from a grain of found sound to my own voice can be transformed into something new.”

The result is a record of uncharacteristic depth and richness (intellectual, emotional and aural), one which sets your synapses crackling with dread and beauty, reminiscence and speculation, or just the pure apprehension of sound, accomplishing most of the hopes and dreams of dubstep, for instance, without even bothering to limit itself to having to be dubstep (which isn’t to say it doesn’t have some of the most terrifying bass rumbles your sternum will feel this side of Hell). Rarely has a piece of music made the listener feel so completely immersed in a new world, with all the strangeness, excitement and, occasionally, fear that entails. Once you begin listening to “ISAM,” anything written about it becomes redundant. A truly outstanding piece of work, it should establish once and for all Amon Tobin’s well-earned right to sit at the very top table of electronic music making.

The album campaign will be accompanied by Amon's most ambitious show to date. Stepping away from DJ'ing, for the first time Amon will be bringing a large scale live audio/visual experience to select cities around the world.

The show will feature a stunning 25' x 14' x 8' multi-dimensional/shape shifting 3-D art installation surrounding Amon and enveloping him and the audience in a beyond 3-D experience. A fantastic visual journey to Amon's music.

Furthermore to mark the release of this highly anticipated album the electronic pioneer has come

together with highly respected Saatchi Collection artist Tessa Farmer on a revolutionary, collaborative

art installation.

Control Over Nature' will combine Amon Tobin's sound design and elements of the forthcoming album,

alongside Farmer's trademark sculptures and will run in selected North American cities.

'GOB'

Kieren Dickins aka DELS is a new type of rapper (which is another way of saying that he’s more than just a rapper). Applying the kind of attention to detail, micro-management and macro-vision which Jay-Z used to build a business empire, DELS makes art. Popular art

mind you, but art all the same, an album of emotional peaks, musical innovation and surreal, brilliant lyrics, held together by such a unique, such a strong vision that it sounds almost silly to suggest it’s just a debut. Already causing a stir with the tasters “Shapeshift” and “Trumpalump” (and the videos he masterminded for them), everything is now ready to

show how these pieces fit into the bigger picture.

Dickins recorded “GOB” with just three producers, all of whom he has collaborated with for a significant amount of time and all of whom are more interested in creating something

with him than in giving him a beat to rhyme on. Micachu is perhaps best known for her “indie” work with her band The Shapes but her interest in grime and hip hop is as well

documented in a series of mixtapes and videos on YouTube. Together she and DELS create the bad-trip anthem “Melting Patterns” and “Violina,” which catches all the disorientation and anger of a relationship break-up. Longtime mentor and friend Joe Goddard of Hot Chip is represented by both “Trumpalump” (featuring his own beautifully melancholy/

hopeful chorus) and Shapeshift, plus a brand new track, “Capsize,” which dissects something of the current political situation in the company of Roots Manuva (the only guest MC on

the record) – a kind of “Ghost Town” for a new generation.

The bulk of the album, though, comes from Kwes. Already known for his singles on Young Turks plus production work for the likes of the Invisible and the XX, in Kwes DELS found

his perfect foil. In a suite of tracks ranging from “Hydronenburg,” through the truly remarkable “Moonshining,” and on into the insanely ambitious “Eating Clouds” (an earlier

version of which was first heard on Ninja Tune’s XX compilation last year), DELS and Kwes lay out the sheer, revolutionary extent of their ambition early. But it’s in the last three

tracks of the record, “DLR,” “Droogs” and “GOB” that the record reaches its fruition. A track about a homeless woman (“DLR,” featuring a beautiful vocal contribution from

sometime bandmate Elan Tamara) and a true story of rape and child abuse told in reverse (the Nadsat-titled “Droogs”), this could be a downbeat end to a record if it wasn’t for the brilliance with which the subjects are treated, both musically and vocally. And if it wasn’t for the last track, “GOB.” “GOB” shows Dickins, angry, battered, but ultimately hopeful, rising

up through all the shit of the world determined to triumph, succumbing neither to the nonsense around him or his own quest for perfection, gradually lifted aloft on a monster of

a piece of music (it would be doing it a misservice to call it a ‘beat’) from Kwes.

NEW 12" RELEASES FOR 23 MAY 2011NINJA TUNE / BIG DADA / BRAINFEEDER

Kieren Dickins aka DELS returns with the final single before the launch of his debut album, the track from which his long player takes its name, "GOB." With music from production wunderkind Kwes (known for his own releases on Young Turks plus production work with The Invisible and The XX) Like a cross between Nine Inch Nails, TV On The Radio and Massive Attack it's a standout moment for British rap and a bold statement of intent.

Appropriately, the lead remix for the project comes from David Andrew Sitek himself. “Super passionate" about the song, the producer spent over two weeks in and out of the studio perfecting his mix, a combination of classic era boom-bap drums, melodic catchiness and trademark audio atmospherics. Untold, on the other hand, tools his remix much more for the dancefloor, cutting into DELS’ vocals to produce a slowburner very much in the mould of his recent “Stereo Freeze” EP for R&S.

Toddla T returns for 2011 with a vinyl only offering, featuring the dulcet tones of his steel city sister in arms, Roisin Murphy, it’s a brilliantly packaged limited re-introduction to our boy T.

Since the release of his debut album ‘Skanky Skanky’ in 2009, Toddla has been working non stop on the follow up ‘Watch Me Dance’ (Aug 2011) writing and recording in Sheffield, London and Jamaica, slotting in sessions between his mind-numbing DJ schedule and Radio 1 DJ slots.

Jennifer Lee aka TOKiMONSTA prefers to work late – or early, depending on how you look at it. Most of her music is made between two and seven in the morning, because at that time of night “my mind works in strange and mysterious ways.” Hence the title of this EP, a series of warm but decidedly woozy pieces of music, the soundtrack to the oddest, most beautiful dreams you’ve ever had.

From the bouncing bass-beds of “Bright Shadows,” the Cocteau’s-meet-LA-Beat of “Darkest (Dim)” (like “Little Pleasures,” featuring the exquisite vocals of Gavin Turek), on into “Moving Forward” (which sounds like the music R2D2 makes love to), the driving, relentless beat of “Day Job,” this is an EP suffused with both warmth and creativity.

Mr. Scruff returns with a synth heavy, low slung 4/4 number featuring a wiggling centipede synth line & unruly bass, scruffed up in his warm & dusty production style.. the sound of electronic instruments enjoying themselves!

The second track see's Nickodemus & Zeb from Brooklyn's legendary Turntables on the Hudson crew tackle 'Music Takes Me up', adding a ton of bump & a ladle of synth to Alice Russell's raw vocals.

DESCRIPTIVE TEXTCave In's first full length in more than half a decade speaks to us in ways we're still processing. Were there not deadlines to meet, and onehseets to submit, we would be taking a bit more time to reflect further on why we find this album, and this band, so important to us. Had you told us in 1997 that we'd be here, in Spring 2011, prepping a new Cave In album, we very likely wouldn't have registered the sort of impact that fact might have on our lives. Now, a dedade and a half since we began working together, we find ourselves humbled and emotional while reflecting on the depth of meaning we find in our relationship. As friends, and as business partners, we've seen each other grow and stumble with an ebb and flow that feels every bit as powerful as this album we hold in our hands. The sentiment we feel while listening to White Silence is every bit an indicator of the bond we're grateful to have with old friends who happen to collectively bust out some of our favorite jams time and time again.

White Silence has an energy and a balance that feels like the work of seasoned vets, consummate professionals that have, with great heart, focus and authenticity, honed their songwriting ability in ways we feel fortunate to have witnessed first hand. If you followed the member's individual trajectories after Cave In's un-declared 2005 hiatus, you'd have been witness to a spectrum of songwriting capabilites. Brodsky's singer-songwriter eccentricies, Zozobra's 2-piece metallic power, Cloud's rock energy, and Doomrider's thunderous roll; all tastes of the potential a re-unified Cave In might present. 2009's Planets of Old was a four song return to form, a small taste of what Cave In were capable of producing with so much experience under their individual and collective belts.

And produce they have. White Silence exudes the feeling that what matters to them is, and perhaps always has been, what happens when these four come together. As we sit here attempting to verbalize this album's impact, we see Cave In and White Silence spatially, formed by each member's own locus of control….it all seems to make so much sense, really. White Silence brings a focused sense of dynamic and a variety that owes everything to the band's collective ability to do it all. The album's driving intro and delicate conclusion bookend a collection of tracks that have continued to fill and thrill Hydra Headquarters day after day for the last few months.

We are giddy at delivering White Silence as a new chapter in the ongoing story of one of our favorite bands. From 1998's Beyond Hypothermia, 1999's Until Your Heart Stops and 2000's Jupiter, right up on through the ep's and releases of the last decade, we're touched, and motivated, by how meaningful and important this album and this band remains to us. We suspect we're not alone in the sentiment. Coming soon to a record store near you ;)

DANIELSON

CATALOGUE NO: BLAZE186

RELEASE DATE: 24th May 2011

LABEL: Fire Records

BARCODE: 809236118639

GENRE: Rock

Grow Up / Wheel In The Sky

"Grow Up", the first single from the forthcoming and much-anticipated Danielson full-length, Best of

Gloucester County, required special mastering to allow for the sheer volume of attitude packed into it.

Did someone say punk rock was reactionary? Please...don't forget the lace-doilies for your tea-party.

Heavy-metal equals funnelled-rage? You might as well be gathering cuttings from the petunia-beds

along the front walk-way.

How about grunge? Scrunk? Deathgrind? Goodness! Is it already time for the afternoon nap? Vinyl 7"

is of course the perfect format for such unadulterated 'tude; it's as if the song leapt from the full-

length vinyl and embraced its own Napoleon complex. Perhaps the only 'appropriate' thing about this

release is that the B-side is Danielson's reimagining of the Journey classic, "Wheel In The Sky". All

strut and swagger and burnin' 2-step, it's a wonder that the 7" doesn't melt to the turntable.

Daniel Smith– Vocal, Acoustic Guitar ; Elin K. Smith– Vocal ; Sujan Stevens– Banjo ; Paul Arbogast–

Trombone ; Patrick Berkery– Drums, Percussion ; Michael Cemprola– Saxophone ; Rachel Galloway–

Screaming Like a Mad Choir is the first in a series of planned releases encompassing The Vertebrat's recorded legacy. This effort is being curated by Jon Ginoli, Pansy Division frontman and longtime Vertebrats aficionado. Includes remastered versions of most of The Vertebrats’ original studio recordings, those tracks put to tape in their hometown of Champaign, Illinois and seven live-in-the-studio tracks captured during a swing down the West Coast recorded for Bomp! Records at the tail-end of the band's initial live incarnation.

"Oh God, that’s a great song!” Paul Westerberg, The Replacements

The Vertebrats (Roy Axford, Jr., Matt Brandabur, Kenny Draznik, and Jim Wald) built a following for their stripped-down style of garage/punk/pop in Champaign, IL and throughout the Midwest between 1979 and '82. Their signature anthem “Left in the Dark”, included on Voxx Records “Battle of the Garages” in 1981, has since been covered by The Replacements, Uncle Tupelo, The Screaming Tribesmen, The Leonards and Courtney Love.

"The Vertebrats had written the quintessential garage rock anthem... 'Left in the Dark' is a time-honored, minimalist piece of what garage-rock was all about." Jay Farrar, Son Volt/Uncle Tupelo

Ward, Dexter Romweber, Southern Culture on the Skids, The Mountain Goats, Jesse Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter Head south past the Mason-Dixon line and into the swamp-hot humidity of North Carolina's summer months, and a porch-swing sing-along with The Moaners starts to sound very appealing. Melissa Swingle (formerly of alt-country darlings Trailer Bride) and Laura King (formerly of Grand National) have been conjuring the spirit of the South over five years and two records, with the ambitious goal of "[capturing] the feeling of ... Faulkner's South, O'Connor's South." With Nocturnal, their spell is stronger than ever. Nocturnal is The Moaners' most mature statement yet, tempering their ferocious, stomping garage rock with a songwriting sensibility that is by turn mysteriously dark and whimsically joyful. Each track offers something new from the band: Humid Air and Raggedy Tune explore new rhythmic approaches and textures, while Cowboy Bob boasts their most adventurous arrangement to date. Earl Poole Ball, the long-time member of Johnny Cash's band who famously graced the piano bench on The Byrds' Sweetheart of the Rodeo, flew in from Austin to Durham, NC to track piano for these sessions. His distinctive playing further illuminates The Moaners’ significant contribution to the cultural landscape of the American South. Praise for Blackwing Yalobusha (2007): "Whether pedal-to-the-metal and balls-to-the-wall, or subdued and considered, Mississippi blues or punk rock, the Moaners illuminate [Swingle's] songs of the south with precisely the right combination of fierce intensity and shade. Sometimes her instantly recognizable tones and hypnotic melodies are shown through a hand-cut, stained glass darkly. At others, they’re left out in the hot sun to burn." -- Popmatters "A pop-blues record complete with tempo shifts, backwards boogie and scurrying drums, The Moaners’ latest, Blackwing Yalobusha, has as much in common with the neo-psychedelia of Jennifer Gentle as it does with Captain Beefheart’s Strictly Personal. What sound at first like shambolic structures reveal themselves as catchy songs that might not match Beefheart’s cantilevered inventions, but compare well to those of The White Stripes." -- Nashville Scene "The Moaners play sexy, eerie garage blues with a spicy side of rockabilly, but their music only sounds primitive; it's much more detail driven than it seems on the surface, and that careful craftsmanship finds expression in joyful onstage catharsis." -- Chicago Reader "Fat slide guitar over primal beats with casually disaffected vocals to tell the tale make this a blues record like you've never heard, a pop record you should." -- Rochester City Paper "One wild and moody ride." -- Allmusic Guide **Touring East Coast June 2011**

**Touring East Coast June 2011**

Overview: Chapel Hillʼs The Moaners and Jennyanykind join forces for a split 7", merging their love for the American South in its boot scuffed, blue-collared glory. Nocturnal, The Moaners' latest full-length on Holidays for Quince Records, proved their most mature statement yet, tempering ferocious, stomping garage rock with a songwriting sensibility that is by turn mysteriously dark and whimsically joyful. They continue this Southern devotion with "Petroleum", a dark blues-pop contribution, somber in depicting their familiar Gulf Coast now transformed by oil spills. Jennyanykind, veteran purveyors of neo-psychedelic and bluesy alt-rock, return – after a 10 years hiatus – relentless as ever with the spirited bar room rocker, "Jam Up and Jelly Tight". Praise for The Moanersʼ Nocturnal (2010): “This is a great album that will make you want to either hit the road, CD in hand, to explore the bits of still uninhabited American landscape, or read The Sound and the Fury, with Nocturnal playing softly in the background. It will remind you of the warm, sultry climate of the South on an evening of an Indian Summer day; sweet tea and all.” – Awaiting the Flood Praise for Jennyanykindʼs Big Johns (1998): “Joe Henry once called The Last Waltz “the perfect fall album.” Big Johns, the November release from rustic Chapel Hill outfit Jennyanykind, also somehow manages to sound and feel like autumn, evoking that strange combination of cool, bracing air and impending death courtesy of songs ranging from the rollicking “So Supernatural” to the stark, elegiac “Bury My Body”. The fiddle-coaxed opener “The Heat, The Hot, And The Hard Luck Swill” does a nice job of capturing The Bandʼs revival-tent rock ʻnʼ soul.” – No Depression

In 1974, Oregon native Bob Desper released an album called New Sounds. A world-weary folk record, soaked with reverb and glorious open chords strummed on a Martin acoustic guitar, New Sounds came and went, released on Rose City Sound, a small Portland-based Christian music label. Around 500 copies of the album were pressed and sent into the world, its plaintive choruses reaching for arms to hold them. And that was that. But over time, the record began to take on a mythical quality amongst folk purists, many of whom gravitated towards Desper’s warm, soulful voice. Nestled in vintage shops and old record stores the world over, New Sounds became a highly collectible piece, commanding hundreds of dollars upon its purchase. And now, thirty-five years later, New Sounds is being officially reissued for the first time on CD.

Blind from the age of ten from an accident that caused his optic nerve to hemorrhage, Desper spent his childhood moving around, from Virginia to California and eventually settling in Portland, gravitating towards the Christian community through his love of music and budding spirituality. This scene provided Bob with the opportunity to meet other musicians, eventually forming a band called Eleventh Hour Sounds, who played regularly around Portland and Eugene at churches and coffee houses. He ended up recording a 7” on his own in 1972, at the age of twenty-one, called “Dry Up Those Tears.” The song is lush, with references to one of Bob’s favorite musicians at the time, George Harrison, but still retains traces of the sparse darkness that were to come through New Sounds. When the song made some minor waves locally, Bob decided to record a full album, which turned out to be very different from his first few songs.

Recorded at age twenty-three, New Sounds is a sparse, dark, beautiful record, made in one take, with a few of the songs improvised on the spot in the recording studio. The album showcases Bob’s deft guitar playing, mixing beautiful open chords with delicate finger-picking, the result of being a guitarist since the age of twelve. The album is a snapshot of a moment in the life of a young blind man struggling towards solace and peace. It was a record crafted as a sort of ministry; Bob hoped it would be of help to others. With a tenderness, a melancholy and even a liberal dashing of hope, New Sounds is folk music at its purist: music for the people, music of shared experience, music of powerful emotion, music that changes and music that heals.
