INVITED SPEAKERS

MARC CASTELLARNAU MANAGING DIRECTOR AT FUELIUM

For the past 15+ years Marc Castellarnau has been

working on the development and application of

microanalytical devices for microbiology and

immunobiology, including sample treatment, cell

sorting, cell characterization, and immunoassays by

means of electrical and optical methods. He also worked

in the implementation of self-powered and autonomous

platforms for analytical applications. This background

attracted him to Fuelium project, where he started as

CTO to become the current Managing Director. He holds

a B.Sc. in Physics, a M.Sc. in Electronic Engineering, and

a PhD in Bioengineering from University of Barcelona. He

also did several postdocs at different institutions (IBEC,

CSIC, and MIT), and works as a consultant (Ateknea) and

in technology transfer (ISGlobal).

JOFFRE GUTIERREZ TENURED SCIENTIST AT ICMAB-CSIC

Joffre Gutierrez´s main research topic for almost 14

years has been superconductivity. In particular, the

interactions between microstructure and vortex matter.

During his PhD at ICMAB (2003-2008), he studied vortex

matter in YBCO coated conductors grown by chemical

solution deposition. During this period, he stayed in 2005

at the STC in Los Alamos National Laboratory (USA), and

during 2006 - 2007 at the Cambridge University in UK.

In 2008 he moved to the Institute of Nanoscale Physics

and Chemistry at the KU Leuven (Belgium), to study

vortex dynamics in clean superconductors. In 2010 he

started leading the research line of nanoscale vortex

matter and dynamics, a task he would undertake until

2015. Additionally, he took part in launching the

European networking project NanoSC to promote

student mobility.

In 2015 he moved back to ICMAB to bring his experience

on probe microscopy, electrical transport

characterization and device fabrication to the field of

optoelectronics and thermoelectricity.

In 2016 he has moved back to the field of applied

superconductivity within ICMAB, where they launched a

consortium between the Institut de Ciència de Materials

de Barcelona, the Institut de Física d’Altes Energies,

ALBA synchrotron, the Universitat Politécnica de

Barcelona and CERN, to take the challenge of developing

a new technology for the future of particle accelerators.

ANNA MAY MASNOU COMMUNICATION & OUTREACH OFFICER

AT ICMAB-CSIC

Anna May Masnou studied Chemical Engineering at the

Universitat de Barcelona (UB), and continued with a

MSc in Chemical Engineering at the Universitat Rovira i

Virgili (URV), Tarragona. She then did a PhD in Materials

Science and Technology at the UB (2014), with three

stays abroad in Japan, France and California. After her

PhD, she spent 1.5 years as Project Manager in

CETAQUA, a Technological Center, and was teaching at

the UB at the same time. She obtained a Juan de la

Cierva grant and started a postdoc at the ICMAB. During

her second year of postdoc, she coursed a Postgraduate

course in Science Communication. She is currently the

ICMAB Communication and Outreach Officer since April

2017.

SALVADOR FERRER SCIENTIFIC ASSISTANT AT ALBA SYNCHROTRON

Salvador Ferrer is a physicist. He holds a PhD from the

Autonomous University of Madrid. He did a postdoc at

Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory. He had been working for

16.5 years at ESRF as beamline scientist and head of the

Surface Science group, and 7 years at Alba as Research

Director during the construction of the first seven

beamlines. At present, he is a Scientific Assistant at

Alba. His fields of interest are Surface Science and

nanomagnetism.

SERGIO VALENZUELA

ICREA RESEARCH PROFESSOR AND GROUP LEADER AT ICN2

Prof. Sergio Valenzuela obtained his PhD in physics in

2001 at the Universidad de Buenos Aires (Argentina)

and held research positions at Harvard University and

the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Since

July 2008 Prof. Valenzuela has been an ICREA research

professor and leader of the ICN2 Physics and

Engineering of Nanoelectronic Devices Group.

His research is focused on the unique properties of

materials with nanoscale dimensions, motivated by

both their intrinsic scientific interest and their potential

for advanced electronic applications. His work

encompasses spintronics, quantum computation with

superconducting circuits and nanoelectromechanical

systems (NEMS). Together with his collaborators, he has

pioneered the use of non-local devices to study the spin

Hall effect of thermopiles to isolate the magnon drag in

ferromagnetic materials, and implemented novel qubit

control and spectroscopy methods.

Page 7: 4th Scientific Meeting of BNC-b students JPhD2019 · ICMAB Communication and Outreach Officer since April 2017. ... book chapters. ROSENDO POU ICMOL, LECTURER AT UNIVERSIDAD DE VALENCIA

Prof. Valenzuela was awarded the 2001 Giambiagi prize

and the 2009 IUPAP Young Scientist Prize in Magnetism

for his contributions to the field of spintronics, as well

as an ERC Starting Grant in 2012. He has authored over

50 articles (Nature, Science, Reviews of Modern Physics,

Nature Materials, Nature Physics, Physical Review

Letters, among others), three patents, and five books or

book chapters.

ROSENDO POU ICMOL, LECTURER AT UNIVERSIDAD DE VALENCIA

Rosendo Pou Amérigo (Valencia, 1966) obtained his

degree with honors mention and posterior doctorate in

Chemistry at Universitat de València (UV). He is a

member of the Unidad de Investigación de Química

Teórica at the Instituto de Ciencia Molecular (ICMol),

where he has worked mainly in quantum-chemical

characterization of electroactive molecular systems.

During his professional career, he has been mainly

focused on teaching innovation techniques and

teaching quality. For this reason, he coordinated the

pilot project of educational innovation for the European

convergence of the faculty of chemistry. In addition,

from 2006 to 2012 he collaborated as an external

assessor for the institutional quality assessment

committee of the office for the university quality system

in Castilla y León. Moreover, he has been, since 2012

until last year, the director of Universitat de València’s

quality unit. He won the second prize from Universidad

Europea de Madrid (UEM) for teaching innovation in

2008. He was also awarded the Premio a la Calidad e

Innovación Docente 2010, granted by the UV for the

project "El teatro es pura química; la química es puro

teatro" which approaches science to high school

students and is still active.

PoS Festival aims to offer interesting and funny speechesabout the latest scientific research, with a formataccesible for all the public. We want to offer a platformwhich allows people to discuss the research with thosewho are taking part on it. PoS is the non-lucrativeorganization directed by volunteer people and created bya scientific community of posdocs and PhDs in 2012.

SCN2 is an independent, non-lucrative and scientificassociation whose purpose is acting as a channel for thecollaboration and meeting of the nanoscience andnanotechnology cluster in Catalonia. By building a network ofexcellence among the scientific and academic sector, thecompanies and the society, we want to promote the research, complement the academic formation and stimulate thetechnology transfer and knowledge among them.

A discussion among young volunteer scientists going beyond their work in the laband taking part in outreach activities, non-lucrative associations and activism.
