THE DAY of Atonement, or YomKippur, as revealed in Leviticus 16,is the most solemn Old Testament

ritual.Also referred to as the Sabbath of

Sabbaths (Leviticus 16:31) ,it is a time to rest in what God, asCreator and Redeemer, has done

(and will do) for us.

THROUGHOUT THE year, all kinds ofsins and ritual impurities weretransferred to the sanctuary.

With the Day of Atonement comesthe time for their removal.

There are three main parts to theDay of Atonement:

1. The purification offering for the priest.2. The purification offering of thegoat for the Lord. 3. The elimination ritual with the

live goat for Azazel.

Because there was neither confessionof sin nor laying on of hands involvedwith the goat for the Lord, its bloodwas not a carrier of sin. Thus, it did

not defile; rather, it cleansed.

The Day of Atonement was unique,for only on this day were both the

sanctuary and the people cleansed.

This was the second stage of a two-phase atonement. In the first phase, during the year, the Israeliteswere forgiven. Their sins were notblotted out but were entrusted to

God Himself, who promised to dealwith them.The second phase did nothave much to do with forgiveness;

the people were already forgiven.

The high priest enter the Most HolyPlace to purge it from the ritualimpurities, transgressions, and sins.He then transferred all the sins onto

the live goat and sent them away,

through the goat, into the desert.This achieved the goal of the Day ofAtonement: a moral purification that

went beyond forgiveness.

to make atonement upon it, and tolet it go as the scapegoat into the

THE LIVEgoat came into play onlyafter the high priest had finished theatonement of the entire sanctuary.The ensuing ritual with the live goat

had nothing to do with the actualcleansing of the sanctuary or of the

people. They already had beencleansed .

We know Azazel as a symbol of Lucifer.The ritual with the live goat was a riteof elimination that accomplished the

final disposal of sin. Sin would bebrought upon the one responsible for

it and then carried away forever.Atonement was made in a punitivesense (Lev 16:10), as the goat carried

the ultimate responsibility for sin.

This ritual parallels the law of themalicious witness (Deut. 19:16 21).The accuser and the accused stand

before the priests and judges.An investigation is held; and if theaccuser is found to be a malicious

witness, he shall receive thepunishment he intended for the

innocent (example: Haman).

Someone who had confessed his sinsduring the first phase of atonementduring the year, but then did not take

the Day of Atonement seriously,he was to be cut off and destroyed

(Lev. 23:29, 30).A person who professes faith in Godcan still lose salvation. Once-saved-

always-saved is not taught in the Bible.

recalls strongly the Day ofAtonement.

Isaiah experienced his ownpersonal Day of Atonement.

to purge the prophets sin. This is an apt image for the cleansing

from sin that is possible through thesacrifice of Jesus and His priestlyministry of mediation.
