As the season is changing from Spring to Summer, so is the Board as we have the changing of the guard. On June 1st a new Board was elected (see picture below). I would like to thank the members who came forward to serve on the Board. I am looking forward to working with them. I realize that we all have different opinions about how to get things done. If we all work together, we can overcome all obstacles. First on the agenda I will host an ice-cream social on Saturday June 18th at 2:00 PM. All are invited to come down to the clubhouse and create their own sundae. This will also be the time that the community can meet the new board members. I will outline the events for the new year at our July meeting (Wednesday, July 6th). If anyone would like to conduct some type of event, she or he is welcome to do so. I am looking forward to planning our 4th of July with the outgoing board and the incoming board. We are in need of some helping hands for recycling (last Saturday of the month). It takes about one and a half hours and starts around 8:15 AM. Come on down and enjoy the donuts. I want to thank all for voting me as your President. I will do everything in my power to provide an exciting year.

Meeting was called to order at 6:29 PM by Vice President Marta Pamilla. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited.Roll call indicated those present were: Marta Pamilla, Tom Pamilla, PK Dolly, Josie Jewett, Suzan Brashers, and Ed Prentice. Absent were: Joyce Lavrar, Ange Peebles, Shirley Nathan, Joan Robichaud, and Dave Jewett.

BOARD APPROVALS: It was moved (Josie Jewett) and seconded (Jim Benedetti) that the May 4th minutes be accepted as printed in the Waggin Tongue. The motion passed unanimously.Correspondence: A letter from the family of Betty Cassineri thanking the Willow Ranch Association and residents for their friendship during Betty’s residence in the park and their help at her Memorial Gathering. --Also, a letter from President Shirley Nathan to Joyce Lavrar and Pam’s Homes thanking them for underwriting ($400+) the printing of our 2016 Willow Ranch Directory. --Tom Pamilla presented a detailed Treasurer’s Report. Clarification questions were answered. 86 households (139 individuals) have submitted WRA dues of $3 each for the 2016/2017 fiscal year. Josie Jewett moved that the Treasurer’s Report be accepted and filed. PK Dolly seconded the motion, and it passed unanimously.

COMMITTEE REPORTS: Marta reminded us of the ABC (Anniversary, Birthday Community) event which will take place Saturday, June 4 at 10 AM. Ina Pellizzer will be honored on the occasion of her 94th birthday. -- The New Residents’ Tea will take place Saturday, June 11 at 10 AM. It will be hosted by Circle of Friends. All are invited to join us in meeting and welcoming new residents.

NEW BUSINESS: Resident Joyce Loewy brought to our attention the fact that the proposed hefty rate hike for water use in Sunnyvale will be considered by the Sunnyvale City Council at their June 9th meeting. She suggested that concerned residents should send letters of protest to the city Department of Finance. The rate increase can add $14 to each resident’s monthly bill.-- Marta commented that both she and Shirley had been happy to serve on the Board this past year and then turned the meeting over to Jim Benedetti who asked if there were any nominations from the floor for Board positions. When none was forthcoming, he read the proposed slate of officers. They are Jim Benedetti- President, PK Dolly-Vice President, Joyce Lavrar-Secretary, Gloria Gallagher-Treasurer, Dorothy Drummer, Ellie Gossett, Bea Simpson, Don Huffman, and Josie Jewett-Board Members. All were elected by unanimous vote and were sworn in by Parliamentarian Ed Prentice. --Newly-elected President Jim Benedetti thanked the outgoing Board for its contributions to the community over the past year and welcomed the new Board. He announced that the old and new board will meet at 6:30 PM, Wednesday, June 8 to jointly plan the July Fourth festivities. Raffle donations for the July 4th party were solicited (ie. gift baskets, gift cards, appliances -- new or gently used, etc.) -- Jim Benedetti reminded us that dues are still being requested and accepted from community residents.-- An Ice Cream Social is planned for Saturday, June 18 at 2 PM to meet the new Board.-- The next board meeting will be held Wednesday, July 6th, at 6:30 PM in the Clubhouse.-- Don Huffman commended Tom Pamilla on the awesome job he did as Treasurer, keeping detailed records of the year’s transactions. Don submitted an audit report and also thanked the outgoing Board for its service.-- It was noted that Shirley Nathan had done an extensive job of inventorying equipment belonging to the Association. It was suggested that an audit and list of property be made, and labels (Property of WRA) affixed to various items to better help future Boards identify ownership. -- The meeting was adjourned at 7 PM.

Respectfully submitted, Josie Jewett (substitute Secretary)

Editor’s Ramblings…Ah, music! I don’t know what I would do without music in my life. From an early age music, I have had music in the foreground or the background in some way. As a youngster, I and my friends would lip-sync the hits of the day on a bed-stage and hold a pretend mike as if we were the actual, impassioned singers.

Then I tried to teach myself how to play the accordion and the piano. We had the former, but the piano had to be played at the houses of friends who had one. To this day, I still can’t play very well, but I do remember the joy that trying brought and still brings.

In high school it was choral music that grabbed my attention. The school offered a couple of choral outlets, and as an alto, I partook wholeheartedly. The blending of voices and the camaraderie could not be beat. It still can’t.

In the college library I often studied wearing headphones that delighted me with the sound of Bach’s music played on organs and brasses. Though I have expanded my musical selection beyond Bach, to this day I often have music in the background no matter what I am doing. On a recent warm afternoon that had chased others off the golf course, I played several holes while listening to music on my phone.

For years, my husband and I have gone to musical concerts -- mainly folk and bluegrass, though we have been seen at some country, Eagles, Weird Al, and Springsteen venues.

Even Willow Ranch has fed my music habit. Don Huffman has put some energy and talent into trying to gather musical folks in our midst to play and sing together. You can join us at the 4th of July event as we sing patriotic and feel-good songs!

Circle of Friends

At our Sat. June 4th ABC event Ina Pellizzer was celebrating her 94th Birthday. Ina was not able to attend our celebration but that didn't stop us from singing “Happy Birthday” to her on the phone. A BIG piece of cake was taken to her. Hosts Robert and Shirley offered cheesecake, fruit, muffins and other delicious eats.

All residents are invited to the next Sat. 10 AM, July 2nd Anniversary, Birthday and Community event (ABC), for a fun gathering.

Also, all new and current residents are invited to the next New Residents’ Tea to share friendship and light refreshments on Sat. July 9th, 10 AM.

New and current residents are always welcome to contact us. If we can assist you in any way, we will do our best.

Hi Everyone,

June is here, and school is out, so grand- children come to visit. My grandsons are visiting from Utah, and they are 20 and 24. They are coming and going, and I never know quite what time they will be here to eat, so I made macaroni salad and barbeque beef for sandwiches; that way no worries about what time to have a meal ready.

Macaroni Salad

2 ½ cups uncooked elbow macaroni1 ½ cups mayonnaise¼ cup sweet pickle juice½ tsp salt¼ tsp pepper1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (4 oz)6 hard-boiled eggs (chopped)6 sweet pickles (chopped)

Cook macaroni according to package directions. Drain macaroni, rinse with cold water and drain well.

In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, juice, salt, and pepper; then add cheese, eggs, pickles; finally, add macaroni and toss gently to coat.

Refrigerate covered, at least two hours or until chilled.

Barbeque Beef

4 lbs stew meat 1 lb 4 oz (large can) sliced tomatoes1 or 2 med onions1 qt water1 ¼ tst chili powder1 tsp pepper1 tsp salt

Library Help

I would like to thank all of those helpers who have volunteered their time to help clean and sort our library books.

Please try and keep the books in order. If you would like, you can just put your new or returned books in the basket situated to the left of the shelves, and one of us will be glad to place them on the correct shelf.

Don’t forget that there are books on tape and DVDs and CDs available in the brown cabinet near the puzzle shelf.

We need more fiction and nonfiction paperback books. If anyone has any suggestions regarding the library, please let me know.

Richard Kade (#142)

When I asked Richard if he would be willing to allow me to interview him, he reluctantly agreed, adding that he did not think that what he had to say would be of much interest. At that moment I knew that this would be an exciting interview.

Richard was born in Los Angeles and is currently semi-retired. I asked Richard about his work history. He worked for 26 years (and counting) at Xerox doing cost analysis. He spent a couple of years at Ford Aerospace until it was absorbed by Loral, and five years at Martin Marietta in the early 1980s until the Challenger disaster.

Without my asking many questions, Richard took me on a historical tour of Silicon Valley followed by a series of philosophical thoughts he has been developing, followed by a brief personal perspective. Richard spoke of the development of the first modern computer, named the giants and their breakthroughs that resulted in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and the Ethernet. He went on to describe the very first computer mouse and the history of the Ethernet. Richard touched on the founding of Sun Microsystems, Adobe Systems and Digital Equipment.

I asked Richard about his WR experience. He has lived here since 1997. What he loves most about WR are the people. He gets involved “catch as catch can.” He is thinking about writing a book of rebuttals of other thinkers/philosophers, but has not made much progress on this project.

Diana, Richard’s wife of 41 years, passed away several months ago. I asked him how he was doing. He briefly said that he had

Community Connectionsby Tom Pamilla

Richard Kade (continued)

just come out of a “funk” and reminds himself that he has 41 years of beautiful memories. Richard then took off on a dissertation about Bach, Shakespeare, Da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Debussy. Richard ended our discussion by pointing out that the savant in each of us is what leads to discoveries and breakthroughs.

And Richard said that he had nothing interesting to share!

Coming soon -- FLEA MARKET!

Just a quick note to alert you that the flea market will be on Saturday, August 13! Remember that you keep the money earned by selling your things.

Because of the recent police activity in Fremont, I pulled up this recent article in the Waggin Tongue about “Shelter in Place.” Police activity is one reason a Shelter in Place order is issued. Another reason could be a toxic chemical spill. Willow Ranch Mobile Home Community is in close proximity to two major highways, 237 and 101, which brings to mind another type of disaster that would bring about a shelter in place alert. Every day there are trucks on these highways that are carrying all types of hazardous materials.

What does “Shelter in Place” mean? Chemical, biological, or radiological contaminants may be released accidentally or intentionally into the environment, or there may be police activity that is considered dangerous in your area. Should this occur, information will be provided in a number of ways (see following paragraph) by local authorities on television and radio stations on how to protect you and your family. Because information will most likely be provided on television and radio, it is important to keep a TV or radio on, even during the workday. The important thing is for you to follow instructions of local authorities and know what to do if they advise you to shelter-in-place.

Sunnyvale relies on Public Safety personnel and the city’s Communications Officer (Public Information Officer) to warn the community of imminent emergencies. Emergency and disaster alerting resources include:

● The Internet - Nixle● Television and Radio● KSUN_ Comcast Channel 15● Community Radio, 1680 AM (Preset this station to your car radio)● Emergency Alert System (EAS)● Alert SCC.com to add your cell phone number● Arc/Gis Communicator

o The Communicator can be used to notify a specific geographic area of a hazard. Since 2004, the Communicator has been used to notify the community of emergency incidents by automatically dialing both listed and unlisted telephone numbers to leave a pre-recorded message. An example of this was a 2006 hazardous materials release in which local residents were asked to “shelter-in-place.” The Communicator was able to complete notifications in a very short time. Without the Communicator, notifications would drain the already overwhelmed resources.

What Shelter-in-Place Means

In an emergency where hazardous material may have been released into the atmosphere a shelter-in-place may be invoked. This is a precaution aimed to keep you safe while remaining indoors. (This is not the same thing as going to a shelter in case of a storm.) Shelter-in-place means selecting a small, interior room, with

Page 12 Waggin Tongue -- July 2016

Page 15: 4c willow ranch

Waggin Tongue -- July 2016 Page 13

SNAP (continued)

few windows, and taking refuge there. It does not mean sealing off your entire home or office building. In the case of police activity in the area, residents would be asked to simply stay indoors, keep doors closed and stay away from windows, etc.

How to Shelter-in-Place

At Home

● Close and lock all windows and exterior doors.● If you are told there is danger of explosion, close the window shades, blinds or curtains.● Turn off all fans, heating and air conditioning systems.● Close the fireplace damper.● Get your family disaster supplies kit and make sure the radio is working.● Go to an interior room without windows that’s above the ground level. In the case of a chemical

threat, an above-ground location is preferable because some chemicals are heavier than air, and may seep into basements even if the windows are closed.

● Bring your pets with you, and be sure to bring additional food and water supplies for them.● It is ideal to have a hard-wired telephone in the room you select. Call your emergency contact and

have the phone available if you need to report a life-threatening condition. Cellular telephone equipment may be overwhelmed or damaged during an emergency.

● Use duct tape and plastic sheeting (heavier than food wrap) to seal all cracks around the door and any vents into the room.

● Keep listening to your radio or television until you are told all is safe or you are told to evacuate. Local officials may call for evacuation in specific areas at greatest risk in your community.

The City of Sunnyvale should be commended for the systems they have put into place for our safety and well being in case of a disaster. As citizens we need to do our part to keep ourselves safe by being prepared with our own individual disaster plan.

If you have any questions regarding the Emergency Preparedness Committee, please contact Eugene Ludwico, space 171 at 408-745-1775.

FIREWORKS SAFETY (from the Red Cross)

The safest way to enjoy fireworks is to attend a public fireworks show put on by professionals. Stay at least

500 feet away from the show. Many states outlaw most fireworks. However, if someone is setting fireworks

off at home, he or she should follow these safety steps:

Never give fireworks to small children, and always follow the instructions on the packaging.

Keep a supply of water close by as a precaution.

Make sure the person lighting fireworks always wears eye protection.

Light only one firework at a time and never attempt to relight "a dud."

Store fireworks in a cool, dry place away from children and pets.

Never throw or point a firework toward people, animals, vehicles, structures, or flammable materials.

Leave any area immediately where untrained amateurs are using fireworks.

Page 16: 4c willow ranch

Page 14 Waggin Tongue -- July 2016

Someone has written these beautiful words. Read and try to understand the deep meaning of it. They are like the ten commandments to follow in life all the time.

1. Prayer is not a “spare wheel” that you pull out when in trouble, but a “steering wheel” that directs the right path throughout.

2. So why is a car’s windshield so large and the rear view mirror so small? Because our past is not as important as our future. So, look ahead and move on.

3. Friendship is like a book. It takes a few seconds to burn, but it takes years to write.

4. All things in life are temporary. If it’s going well, enjoy it; that won’t last long. If it’s going badly, don’t worry; that won’t last long either.

5. Old friends are gold! New friends are diamond! If you get a diamond, don’t forget the gold! Because to hold a diamond, you always need a base of gold.

6. Often when we lose hope and think this is the end, God smiles from above and says, “Relax, sweetheart, it’s just a bend, not the end!”

7. When God solves your problems, you have faith in His abilities; when God doesn’t solve your problems, He has faith in your abilities.

8. A blind person asked St. Anthony, “Can there be anything worse than losing your eyesight?” He replied: “Yes, losing your vision!”

9. When you pray for others, God listens to you and blesses them; sometimes when you are safe and happy, remember that someone has prayed for you.

10. Worrying does not take away tomorrow’s troubles; it takes away today’s peace.

Having a Little Fun with... and Food for Thought...Less Familiar Adages Words to Inspire

It's not whether you win or lose, but how you place the blame.

We have enough "youth"; how about a fountainof "smart"?

A fool and his money can throw one heck of a party.

When blondes have more fun, do they know it?

Money isn't everything; but it sure keeps the kids in touch.

Don't drink and drive; you might hit a bump and spill something.

If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you

Red meat is not bad for you; fuzzy green meat is bad for you.

99 percent of all lawyers give the rest a bad name.

Xerox and Wurlitzer will merge to produce reproductive organs.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IS NO MATCH FOR NATURAL STUPIDITY.

The latest survey shows that three out of four people make up 75% of the population.

"You know why a banana is like a politician?" "He comes in and first he is green, then he turns yellow and then he's rotten."

"I think Congressmen should wear uniforms -- you know, like NASCAR drivers, so we could identify their corporate sponsors."

The reason Politicians try so hard to get re-elected is that they would “hate” to have to try to make aliving under the laws they've passed.

“Wise sayings often fall on barren ground, but a kind word is never thrown away.” --Arthur Helps

A note about Manny -- Manuel (Manny) Dutra was born 5/22/42 and is still living. Yes, this is a tribute for a living person who moved out of his home here at Willow Ranch and into a health care residence near Manteca. He was born and raised in CA ( a true native). After completing school he started a maintenance/cleaning business, worked in leather repair, and started a vehicle repair business partnership. He had always liked driving his cars and trucks but aspired to drive buses (or trains) as an occupation. He applied for and got a job (very difficult at that time) with the VTA to drive buses (10 yrs) and light rail train (3 yrs). He met Kay, his awesome wife of 32 years, on one of those early bus runs (how romantic). But then (after 13 yrs) he started being disabled from Ankylosing Spondylitis (progressive arthritis that causes fusion of bones of the spine). He focused on his love for reading (history novels, mysteries, WWII books, etc.) and music to fill his time. He still loves 60’s music (Janis Joplin and Fleetwood Mac) and soprano Sarah Brightman/tenor Luciano Pavarotti. Through many surgeries, procedures and therapies (water being his favorite), his mobility has diminished to where he now requires more care than can be accomplished at home, but his spirit lives. Manny (and Kay, eventually): You are out of the WR Park but not out of our hearts. God Bless, Manny and Kay! Note: Kay is moving away also, and will leave a large "hole" here at Willow Ranch. --Don Huffman, Sp 146
