Lyocell Fiber
Lyocell is a natural, man-made fiber produced inan environment-friendly process fromwoodpulp and has become popular in clothingbecause it is absorbent and comfortable forwear, especially in conditions of high humidity.
Lyocell was developed by Courtaulds Fibers(now Acordis Cellulosic Fibers), an internationalsupplier of rayon. It entered the consumermarket in 1991. The properties and productionprocesses were unique enough for the Federal
Trade Commission to designate it as a separatefiber group. The trade name for lyocellproduced by Acordis is Tencel. Lenzing Fibers, another major manufacturer of rayon, has alsoentered the lyocell market. This product ismarketed as Lenzing lyocell. An improved fiber,in terms of performance and properties, lyocellis also friendly to the environment. Virtually all
of the chemicals used in the production processare reclaimed. The resulting fiber, lyocell, isboth biodegradable and recyclable.
Lyocell is a manufactured fiber, but it is notsynthetic. It is made fromwood pulp harvestedfromtree farms for this purpose. Because it ismade froma plant material, it is cellulosic andpossesses many properties of other cellulosefibers, such as cotton, linen, ramie, and rayon -another manufactured but non-synthetic fiber.
In many ways, lyocell is more similar to cottonthan it is to rayon. Like other cellulosic fibers,it is breathable, absorbent, and generally

comfortable to wear. In fact, lyocell is moreabsorbent than cotton and silk, but less sothan wool, linen, and rayon. It can take highironing temperatures, but like other cellulosicswill scorch, not melt, if burned, and issusceptible to mildew and damage bysilverfish. Cellulosic fibers are not resilient, which means they wrinkle. Lyocell hasmoderate resiliency. It does not wrinkle asbadly as rayon, cotton, or linen. Also, slightshrinkage is typical in lyocell garments.Stability, overall, is similar to that of silk andbetter than cotton or linen.
Lyocell has strength and durability. It is thestrongest cellulosic fiber when dry, evenstronger than cotton or linen and is strongerthan cotton when wet. Lyocell is much strongerthan rayon when wet. This property of high
wet strength usually determines the extent towhich fabrics can be machine washedsuccessfully.
Physical Characteristics
5TEXTILE
Other desirable properties of lyocell are itsluster and soft drape which makes it anaesthetically pleasing fiber. Since it is amanufactured fiber, the diameter and length offibers can be varied. Lyocell can be made intomicrofibers (very fine fibers), offering depthand body to fabrics combined with luxuriousdrape. Short staple length fibers give a cotton-like look to fabrics. Long filament fibers aresuccessful in silk-like end uses. Lyocell blendswell with other fibers including wool, silk, rayon, cotton, linen, nylon, and polyester. Itsuccessfully takes many finishes, bothfunctional and those designed to achievedifferent surface effects, and dyes easily.Overall, lyocell is a versatile fiber with manydesirable properties.

Every kind of regenerated cellulosic fibreshows a skin-core structure. The skin parthas an amorphous structure while the corepart shows a highly crystalline orientedone. Their specific repartition inside theLyocell fibre leads to unique remarkableproperties called fibrillation.
All regenerated cellulosic fibers (not cotton)lose a part of their tensile strength inwater; this loss is significantly less forLyocell fibers.
As with conventionally manufactured cottonfabric, there are many steps and processesinvolved in production of Lyocell. The majorsteps are:
1. creating a solvent solution fromwood pulp2. spinning Lyocell fiber fromthe solvent
solution3. washing Lyocell fiber to remove
solvents drying fiber and producing yarns
4. drying fiber and producing yarns

Wood pulp
Step 1 Creating a solvent solutionfromwood pulp
The manufacturing process for Lyocell isbased on the principle of direct solventspinning. The wood pulp solution isproduced in a straight salvation process bydissolving wood pulp at high temperatures
and pressures in a non-toxic organic solventsolution of amine oxide, particularly N-methylmorpholine N-oxide, which isreclaimed and recycled in a closed loopspinning process conserving energy andwater. Up to 99%of the solvent isrecovered and reused. The wood pulp can
come froma variety of sources, such aswood chips or even large rolls of paper thathave been finely shredded, depending uponthe manufacture's technologies.
Step 2Spinning Lyocell fiber fromthesolvent solutionBefore being formed into fibers, the fiber-producing substances for all manufacturedfibers is in a thick liquid state. In thespinning process this liquid is forcedthrough a spinneret. The clear viscousresultant solution is filtered and extruded
into an aqueous bath of dilute amine oxide, and coagulated into fiber form. Thisprocess does not involve any directchemical reaction and the diluted amineoxide is purified and reused.
Step 3Washing Lyocell fiber toremove solvents
The fiber is then washed before it is driedand twisted or spun into yarns, which arewoven or knitted into fabrics or garments.
Step 4 Drying fiber and producingyarnsWhen the filament dries or solidifies, itforms what is called a continuous filamentfiber. Many continuous filaments of specificthicknesses collected in a large bundlecalled a tow. Strands of continuousfilament fibers are then twisted together toforma continuous filament yarn, which isthen woven or knit.
A unique property of Lyocell is that the fibers
fibrillate when wet and are mechanicallyagitated. The fibrils peel off along the surfaceof individual fibres when they are:Swollen in waterUndergoing a mechanical stress in wet
state. The fibres split into many small fibrils
attached to the base fibres.Abrasion causes fibrils to break, one
break giving two fibrils.

DYEING OF LYOCELL FIBRESDRIMAREN / SANDOSPACE R PasteAs described in the processing routes the primary fibrillation
could follow its course during the dyeing of goods in rope ofgarment formDue to crosslinking behaviour certain type of bireactive dyes
reduce the fibrillation tendancy during dyeing. The workingconditions are also very important like, for example dyeingtemperature.
Drimaren K / Drimaren CLDue to the lower dyeing temperature, to the excellent washing offproperties of these two families of dyes, the dyeing conditions are mildand lead to reproducible desired effects.
Primary trials are recommanded to check the influence of the type ofDrimaren dyes, the concentration of Sandospace R Paste on to the
desired effect.Drimagen E2R Liquid is necessary to level the distribution of the dyes
during the first step of the dyeing (salt phasis), to control the fixationof the dyes (alkali addition).

Prevention of fibrillation duringdyeing (jet)
Wet cross linking
Up to now very little other than "peach skin"effects were required on fabrics of 100%
Tencel or Lyocell and their blends. These wereachieved through fibrillation processes onspecial machines withBactosol CA Liq conctreatment followed by "telluric" treatment.Smooth finishes are increasingly in demand.Fibrillation is not desired, particularly on knitgoods. Since this undesired fibrillation isproduced by minimal mechanical stress duringwet processes, we have developed processeswhich prevent fibrillation, e.g. during dyeing onthe jet.
After desizing (e.g. pad roll desizing) andscouring, the goods are dried in open width.
The cross linking agent solution is then padded(pickup ca. 80%) and the goods rolled up andbatched with rotation for 22-24 h. Re-rollingafter 1 - 2 h is recommended to equalize any
swelling tension. After washing off andneutralizing, the goods can be dyed withoutany disturbing fibrillation.

The amount of cross linking agent depends onthe material and whether this wet cross linkingis intended to stabilize fibrillation as well as
prevent greying during subsequent domesticlaundering. The depth of the dyeing may beaffected so it is advisable to determine theoptimumrecipe in pretrials.
With wet-cross linked goods it is virtuallyimpossible to produce a peach skin effect by anenzymatic/telluric treatment. Macro- and micro-fibrillation are blocked and the surface remainssmooth.
A mercerization process at 22-27B also
achieves blocking of undesired fibrillation. Thegoods can be dyed on the jet but contrast towet cross linking, micro fibrillation is stillpossible by applying an enzymatic treatment.
The effects show relatively good washfastness so that finishing withArkofixNDF.IN Liq conccan be omitted in somecases. In any case the amount ofArkofixNDF.IN Liq conccan be reduced. Anyway, it isimportant that permanent softeners are appliedin finishing (exhaust or pad).
Whether wet cross linking or mercerization is
carried out also depends on the followingfactors:available machines (mercerizing
machine, padder for CPB process)whether total blocking or micro
fibrillation is requiredquality of goodsconstruction of the goodsDyeing process, etc.
Both methods have advantages anddisadvantages. The most suitable process mustbe selected in each case together with the
customer.
Complaints about unsightly garments after only
Mercerization
Greying and fibrillation in domesticlaundering
one or two washes are steadily increasing.
The garment containing Lyocell/Tencel whichwas prepared, finished and made up with somuch care was washed by the housewifeaccording to the recommendation in a gentleprogramme at 40C. In spite of this the
mechanical stress in the washing machine wassufficient to cause severe fibrillation of thesurface and a grey appearance of the goods.Often after the first wash the special softflowing handle of this fibre has disappearedand left a hard, board like fabric. This is theresult of using the wrong, non-permanentsoftener during finishing.
We recommend our permanent softeners fromtheSandopermandCerapermranges for thisspecial, eco-friendly hi-tech fibre of thesuperior class. Garments finished with these
softeners are still soft and comfortable to wearafter several washes. These permanentsofteners also contribute to protection of theenvironment because they remain on the fibreand are not washed into the effluent. But!Even they cannot prevent fibrillation duringdomestic washing.
There are various possible methods ofachieving washing machine-resistant goods:Resin finishing withArkofix NDF.IN
Liq concby the dry curing methodtogether with permanent softeners (seerecipes)As mentioned above, a higher amount
ofArkofix NDF.IN Liq conccan beadded in wet cross linking beforedyeing to achieve fibrillationstabilization for domestic laundering. However, if it is desired to keep theArkofix NDF.IN Liq concconcentration as low as possible beforedyeing, it is possible to add a reducedamount of Arkofix NDF.IN Liq conc
during finishing. In many cases mercerization produces
adequate stabilization but there is alsothe possibility of applyingArkofixNDF.IN Liq concin finishing.
If no cross linking agent has been appliedbefore finishing, higher amounts ofArkofixNDF.IN Liq concmust be applied in finalfinishing.
We recommend the following recipes for resinfinishing ofknitandwoven goods.

Clariant Consultancy Service Section
Poor / Uneven surface; Improper removal of kitties in heavy drill fabric on jigger and whiteness variation are some of the other major problemsencountered during processing
Problems
Poor / Uneven absorbency
Poor dye pick up on viscose and polynosicscomponent
Bleeding of color to the adjacent white
portion
Lighter selvedge when scoured in JT-10
Dark colored patches
Probable Causes/Remedies
Improper Scouring due to:
Paucity of Alkali
Channeling of Kier liquor
Inadequate boiling time
Negative pick-up
Insufficient steaming in steamer
Inadequate dwell time in CBR/J -Box
Dropping of steamcondensates water
during batching on Pad-roll system
Due to the use of poor quality of wetting
agents which have low alkali stability and
hence cannot assist the penetration of
caustic soda for efficient saponification
reaction. Because of poor detergency and
dispersing effects, paraffin wax cannot be
removed completely.
Orientation of skin of viscose/polynosics,
thereby making penetration of dye difficult
Presence of hydrolyzed starch acting as
a reducing agent
Recuperator temperature more than060C
Due to improper oxidative treatment
mainly Sodiumhypochlorite bleaching. The selvedge gets more exposed to air
Fabric coming in direct contact with
concentrated feeding alkali
Frequent stoppages of mercerizing
machine
Dry up of improperly neutralized alkali
after mercerizationAbrasion before dyeing
Remedial Measures
Maintain proper concentration of alkali
Ensure proper piling of fabric into the kier
Maintain proper boiling time depending on
fabric quality
Ensure 15-20%differential wet pick-up on
saturators
Ensure proper steampressure
Maintain the desired dwell time by
controlling the speed of the machinedepending on fabric quality
Ensure proper threading and heating of TRC
to avoid steamcondensation/dropping on
cloth
Use of Hostapal MRN Liq conc. is
recommended as a wetting cumdetergent.
The synergistic properties of the product
help to penetrate into the core of the fibre
by eliminating fibre-liquid surface tension
and saponification of oil impurities. So
fabrics gets very good absorbency.
Causticize goods with (or leaching of
surface of viscose) 60 g/l Caustic Soda
5 g/l Mercerol QWN.IN Liq Thorough hot

with Sirrix N Liq conc
Use mild oxidizing agent like Revatol S.
IN p
Recuperator temperature should not0exceed 60C
Ensure uniformpH of the fabric at the
body and near the selvedge beforeoxidative treatment
If possible, avoid hypochlorite
bleaching and give Protonic treatment
