Jane Sassaman Returns to BERNINA Connection

Jane Sassaman is an award winning quilt artist and fabric designer. Her quilt "Willow" was named one of the One

Hundred Best Quilts of the Century. This year at International Quilt Festival in Houston, Jane received an

award for her quilt, Illinois Album

Jane is the author of The Quilted Garden which encompasses twenty years of her work and the latest

book, Patchwork Sassaman Style. She is a gifted teacher who quietly and gently brings out the artist in her students. We've selected two one-day workshops

for you May 9th and 10th Treat yourself and sign up for both!

Simple Silhouette Friday, May 9

10 - 4 $75

This is a class for beginning machine applique students or any quilter who wants to create an easy yet dramatic small quilt. You will choose one of Jane's central motifs

and your favorite Sassaman fabric to make a dynamic 18"quilt. Jane teaches a unique "bandage" appliqué

method. Once you learn this, you will have the confidence to use it again and again in your work.

Suns and Moons Saturday, May 10

This is a machine appliqué class based on the very

popular circle motif. With Jane's appliqué technique and your decorative stitches you'll

DUST, LINT AND ACTS OF KINDNESS There are small acts of kindness that people at times do for one another as a courtesy. After finishing a meal at a restaurant, we might tidy up the table to make it a little easier for the server who will need to bus the table. When our family stayed in a motel room, my mother used to "make the bed" before we left. Although the sheets would have to be stripped if mom had made the bed or not, she felt that it was a statement of respect and courtesy to the room service staff. Sometimes the Bernina Connection service department is the recipient of this same courtesy from our customers. When a well used machine comes to us for repair, we might remove the needleplate, bobbin case and hook and see very little lint and dust. This may be because the owner vacuumed her machine, or she could have blown the lint using canned air. The former is helpful to us and although the intent is appreciated, the later may not be. When canned air (or compressed air) is applied, it will blow dust and lint deeper INTO the mechanism, making it more difficult to extract. This lint will stick to the dense grease lubricant which we apply to specific gears. A dental pick will then need to be used to clean each gear tooth. On some models, the lint can also be blown into areas that are very difficult to access. In contrast, routine vacuuming is very helpful and will increase your machine's longevity as well. This keeps dirt particles out of moving parts which will reduce mechanical wear. Just remove the needleplate and bobbin case, and use the nozzle of your vacuum with a small brush. An even easier solution is to use a micro vacuum attachment kit, which we stock at the Bernina Connection for less than $20.00. These consist of a thin hose and a variety of small thin nozzle adapters which can connect to almost any household vacuum cleaner. This kit makes lint removal a breeze.

At the Bernina Connection, we find that the majority of our customer family takes excellent care of their machines. While not a substitute for routine service, this act of kindness not only makes our job easier, but more importantly, it helps your machine last longer and perform better. And this allows you to spend more hours enjoying your favorite hobby. So next time you remove lint or dust, know that both your sewing machine and the Bernina Connection service staff appreciate your courtesy!

Days for Girls Tue Feb 25 6-9

We are so blessed to be living here in the United States where

many of the problems that girls and women face in the

developing world are just not an issue. In over 61 countries girls miss up to two months

of school a year because they don't have proper

sanitary supplies to use during their monthly periods. Women in the work force face the same

issues. Go to www.daysforgirls.org to read about the difference this organization has made in these counties.

We want to get involved in this effort. We'll have jobs

for any level of sewing skill. Drawstring bags hold the washable pads along with small bars of soap. For

many girls these are the prettiest things they have ever

owned.

If this touches your heart as it has ours, please join us.

Every month, Gail picks a group of stunning fabrics. Using these fabrics, you create a 12‖ finished size block - any pattern you

like - as many as you want! Bring your blocks in, with your name on them, of course, and at next session we draw names for the winner of the jackpot! Every 12 blocks turned in - we have one

winner! With 3 - 6 winners a month, it won‘t be long before you have ready-made blocks for a

quilt top! Once everyone has won - we start a new round. You can join in anytime. This

group has been one of our most fun ―classes‖ ever. Congratulations to all the

winners! New participants are welcome! Ask for the Rules! You could be a winner too!
