Prayers for the Sick—Please pray for Fr. James Beatty, Fr. Thomas Flynn, Nora Lally, Richard Stofear, Rosemary Arkey, Lucy Janoush, Susan Beckett, Jake and Jade Olsavsky, Ann Grossman, Rob Noland, Lindsey Marie Ballas, Steve Zgurich, Glenna Reno, Terry Fleming, Tim Matsik, Jim Strickland, Thomas Schneider, Rita Schneider, Lyn Vallee, Dorothy Boehnlein, Bill Pirnat, Rosa Maria Santos, Carol Maciag, Meredith McCartney Singer, David Kohl, Elayne Lewis, Linda and Doug Biesterveld, Grace Slarsgarten, Daniel John Zimmerman, Holland Neifer, Linda and Jim Erlandson, Grace Penkala, Christine Sinclair, George Shepherd, Viola Free, Joanne Jubach, Kevin Graham, Pat Kassay and all the sick. Updating Census Forms—It has been over 23 years since the Parish has updated the census form we use to register new parishioners. As the new form is introduced, we are asking every parish household to fill this form out. As with all families, changes take place and the information that you filled out on the original census form may not be current. For example, if you disconnected your land line phone service, Holy Spirit may not have a current phone listing for you. If you have adult children still living in your household, we are asking that they fill out their own census form. Please take the time to fill out all the areas on the new form. This information will help us serve you better. Why a census form is necessary? Communication is the number one reason that current information is being requested. Communication is the best way to keep our Parish vibrant and you as parishioners informed about what is happening in the church, locally and globally. Also, it is our way to find out what you need from us. We offer many different programs and services to help our parishioners live Christ filled lives and letting you know that these things are available is our goal. This new form will be included in next weekend’s bulletin and it will also be available on our website under the Communications tab.

Summer Maintenance Help Needed—Holy Spirit Parish is looking for a college student to assist the maintenance team for the summer. Hours are 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. The work consists of mowing grass, cleaning floors, and other maintenance work as directed. Please submit a resume to the Parish office and include current school information, any current or previous parish involvement, and desired starting and ending dates. Resumes may be dropped off at the Parish or emailed to [email protected] by May 29, 2018.

Welcome to Abbott Gary A. Hoover, our 48

Confirmation Candidates and their family and friends, as we celebrate Confirmation this weekend. God bless all of the Confirmation Candidates as they receive the grace and blessings to go out into the world to live a Christ filled life.

REPAIRS & IMPROVEMENTS FUND

The cost of ongoing maintenance at Holy Spirit Parish is covered by the donations received through the Repairs & Improvements gold envelope that is included in the monthly envelope packet. We will continue to add to this fund for the next project at Holy Spirit Parish. The current Repairs & Improvements Fund total is $49,575.50. Thank you again for your generosity! Many thanks for all gifts large or small.

Ascension of the Lord May 13, 2018

“Buon Onomastico”—“Happy Name-Day” (onom- means "name" in Greek). This greeting was one with which I

became familiar when I was studying in Rome (for the record: Fr. Koopman was my next-door-neighbor for a bit). In

many places, particularly those with a Catholic culture, it is common to celebrate someone on the day of his/her patron

saint’s feast day. For some cultures, this is more important than celebrating a birthday!

Unlike many parishes, being under the patronage of the Holy Spirit, we don’t have a patronal saint per se. We can’t

name St. N. as a patron, like in Eucharistic Prayer III where there is a place to name the saint of the day or the patronal

saint:

May he make of us an eternal offering to you, so that we may obtain an inheritance with your elect, especially

with the most Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with blessed Joseph, her Spouse, with your blessed

Apostles and glorious Martyrs (with Saint N. : the Saint of the day or Patron Saint) and with all the Saints, on

whose constant intercession in your presence we rely for unfailing help.

(I often include the saint of the day, though the Sunday Mass supersedes the celebration of the saint.)

This Sunday we celebrate Pentecost, the patronal feast day of our parish of Holy Spirit. That it is our patronal feast can

get lost because it’s hard to see it as a day that is elevated in celebration at this parish because it is already a big

celebration in the Church. It is one of the major celebrations of the Church year. Pentecost, the celebration of the

sending of the Holy Spirit, marks the end of the Easter Season.

So, let me wish all of our parishioners Buon Onamastico. Let us celebrate today our Parish of Holy Spirit on this Feast

of Pentecost.

Also, welcome Abbot Gary Hoover, OSB, Abbot of St. Andrew Abbey in Cleveland, who will be celebrating the

Sacrament of Confirmation at the noon Mass on Sunday. We pray for those to be confirmed that their reception

of the sacrament may be powerful and fruitful in their lives.

From the Pastor

Today we celebrate the "birthday of the Church!" Pentecost is described in the first reading from the Acts of the Apostles. But before the great driving wind and tongues of fire empowering the Disciples, the Holy Spirit had already arrived. The Gospel for today's Mass during the day is from John 20. Jesus appears to the fearful disciples after His resurrection. He first speaks a message of calm. "Peace be with you." The apostles "rejoiced when they saw the Lord." When the enthusiastic response settles down, Jesus "breathed on them and said to them 'Receive the Holy Spirit.'"

This action is Trinitarian, and it has happened before. If you turn your Bible back to the beginning, you'll read: "The Lord God formed man out of the clay of the ground and blew into his nostrils the breath of life, and so many became a living being" (Genesis 2:7). In the Garden of Eden, we see God's first, original covenant with man. The breath of life signifies that original indwelling of grace, the special state of likeness and friendship with God before the Fall. Here now, in this locked room, the Apostles receive the long-awaited promise: the very breath of God, new life, a new covenant.

In the pairing of these two readings--the Pentecost experience in Acts and the breath of Jesus in John's Gospel --we see that the coming of the Holy Spirit is not only an empowering, it is an indwelling. We have each received the breath of grace in our baptism. It is confirmed, strengthened, and deepened in each reception of the sacraments. If we persevere in virtue, the Spirit of God is alive in us, inspiring our actions of love. This Pentecost Sunday, how is the breath of God alive in you?

Catholic Charities Follow-up In-Pew Collection

This Weekend—May 19/20, 2018

This weekend, we will be participating in an important Follow-Up Parish Appeal for Catholic Charities. Funds raised through this effort will be used to expand treatment and prevention services to fight the opioid crisis that has a grip on our families, friends and communities. In 2017, nearly 1,200 people in our diocese died of drug overdoses. With your help, Catholic Charities will be able to expand their reach into every county and provide help and hope to those suffering from addiction.

DOUBLE YOUR IMPACT! All new, increased and additional gifts returned in the In-Pew envelopes next weekend or donated online at www.CatholicCommunity.org/Challeng will be matched up to $100,000.

Everyone knows someone who has been affected by drug addiction. Prayerfully consider the impact you can have on their recovery and please give as generously as possible. Contact Karen Joyce at 216-696-6525 ext. 1910 to kjoyce@Catholic Community.org. Thank you for making a difference.

Religious Education

PSR. The PSR academic year is now complete and we would like to thank all who taught classes or helped in any way. It was a good year and we thank God for His goodness in all that we were able to accomplish. Have a safe summer. Don’t forget your prayers and we’ll see you in Church.

Summer PSR Program. At this time we are in need of

1 eighth grade teacher with the topic being the early

Church. If no one volunteers to teach, we will only have

one class of grade 8 and it is now filled. The other

students in grade 8 will have to attend during the academic

year. Registrations for Holy Spirit PSR Programs are only for registered members of Holy Spirit Church. Registration forms were given to PSR students in grades 4 through 7 on April 23 and 24. Students who attended last summer and do not have siblings in PSR had their forms mailed to them. We will have the Summer PSR Program from June 18 - June 29. The times are from 9:15 a.m. - 12:00 noon. The policy is that students cannot miss, nor be late or leave early. We excuse absence only for funerals and sickness and there are no discipline problems. If you would like to teach grade eight, please call Sister Connie at the Parish Office. You will be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Holy Spirit Parish 2018 Confirmation Class

Holy Spirit, fan into flame the gifts I received in my Baptism and Confirmation. I want to receive the fire of Your love

as Your disciples did at Pentecost.

Come with wonder and awe, with wisdom, understanding, and counsel, with courage and faith in You.

Holy Spirit, may my actions bear witness to Your presence in my life. Help me to see the ways my strengths can serve

In all my interactions, I want to radiate love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and

Fr. Dan’s Corner—

Let us all pray for vocations to Church service,

especially to the priesthood, diaconate, and religious

life. Yesterday four men were ordained as priests by

Bishop Nelson Perez: Deacons Richard Samide,

Michael Feldtz, and Matthew Cortnik for the Diocese

of Cleveland, and Deacon Amando Emmanuel Padilla

Contreras, CSJ, for the Congregation of St. Joseph. In

another 25 years, maybe some of the boys in our First

Communion class will take this step, and some of our

girls might dedicate themselves to serving God as

religious sisters. Such a choice is a beautiful gift to

God and the Church. Not to forget the loving service

of lay ecclesial ministers, such as Pat Kassay, Len

Gnizak, Pat Leonard, and Sarah Hamski. The four men

on the cusp of priestly ministry have reached this point

thanks to the prayerful support of many. As is true for

our fellow workers in the vineyard who serve God

through marriage and the single life, their dedication to

prayer, eucharist, and penance have nourished them on

their long journey. Each of us has been blessed with

these gifts. They will carry us all the way to Paradise!

First Friday Forum of Lorain County June 1, 2018 ~ 11:30 a.m. to1:00 p.m.
