What will you learn?• What data citation is, and what the
benefits are.• How to use DOIs for data citation.• How to cite a dataset• How to find publications with DOIs• Link your publications to your dataset
(and vise versa) using DOIs

Why data citation with DOI’s is important
• Recognisable id in science• Authoritave data claim• Persistent link to data• Makes data discoverable

What is a DOI ?• What you see: alphanumeric string (never
changes)• Associated with: location (such as URL)• Accompanied with: who, what, when…
(metadata)
![Page 10: [4.1] Data Citation and DOI's - Research Data Management - part of PhD course - [3TU.Datacenter]](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062405/554e9483b4c90573338b502a/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
• Stable linking– Data can move, without breaking the link
Benefits of a DOI
![Page 11: [4.1] Data Citation and DOI's - Research Data Management - part of PhD course - [3TU.Datacenter]](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062405/554e9483b4c90573338b502a/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)

DataCite
• Growing demand to make data citable.• DataCite is an international consortium whose aims
are:– to establish easier access to research data on the internet– to increase acceptance of research data as legitimate,
citable contributions to the scholarly record – to support data archiving that will permit results to be
verified and re-purposed for future study.• Development of standards, workflows, and best
practices.• 2013: 18 members from 13 countries, 9 associated
members, ~2.2 Million DOIs
![Page 13: [4.1] Data Citation and DOI's - Research Data Management - part of PhD course - [3TU.Datacenter]](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062405/554e9483b4c90573338b502a/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
What is the value of a data set with a DOI?
• Datasets with a DOI have to be:
• Stable (i.e. not going to be modified)• Complete (i.e. not going to be updated)• Permanent – by assigning a DOI we’re
committing to make the dataset available for posterity
• Good quality – by assigning a DOI we’re giving it our data centre stamp of approval, saying that it’s complete and all the metadata is available
![Page 14: [4.1] Data Citation and DOI's - Research Data Management - part of PhD course - [3TU.Datacenter]](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062405/554e9483b4c90573338b502a/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Assignment: Find a paper using its DOI
• doi:10.1016/S0140-6736(08)61345-8
![Page 15: [4.1] Data Citation and DOI's - Research Data Management - part of PhD course - [3TU.Datacenter]](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062405/554e9483b4c90573338b502a/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
Resolving DOI’s• Open the following DOI site in your browser:
http://dx.doi.org• Enter the entire DOI citation in the text box
provided, and then click Go. • The document that matches the DOI citation will
display in your browser window.
![Page 16: [4.1] Data Citation and DOI's - Research Data Management - part of PhD course - [3TU.Datacenter]](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062405/554e9483b4c90573338b502a/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
How to get a DOI
• Deposit your datasets with a DOI enabled data repository, e.g. 3TU.Datacentrum
• Deposit your article/paper or thesis at a DOI enabled journal publisher or institutional repository
![Page 17: [4.1] Data Citation and DOI's - Research Data Management - part of PhD course - [3TU.Datacenter]](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062405/554e9483b4c90573338b502a/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
Link your datasets to your publications
![Page 18: [4.1] Data Citation and DOI's - Research Data Management - part of PhD course - [3TU.Datacenter]](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062405/554e9483b4c90573338b502a/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
How to use DOIs in your publication for citing your data
• To enhance the visibility and sharing of your datasets, we strongly recommend you to include in your article or dissertation the DOIs you have applied for your datasets.
– Example 1: (at imprint section of the thesis)
![Page 19: [4.1] Data Citation and DOI's - Research Data Management - part of PhD course - [3TU.Datacenter]](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062405/554e9483b4c90573338b502a/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
Data citation usage: Example 2in References section of the publication
