The school’s holistic approach to education is very important to the Roger Federer Foundation, which is why it is also funding a work and music room, a library and a sports center.

In summer 2010, i.e., before the school’s official opening, a two-week football training camp was held there for 50 children, and a painting workshop for 30 children was orga-nized in collaboration with the Zurich University of the Arts. There was no charge for taking part in either event.

The Salima Campus was originally planned for only four secondary-levels classes, but in order to guarantee the school long-term funding it was expanded to university-entrance diploma with the addition of two more classes. This makes the school attractive to better-off families, and the school fees that they pay cross-subsidize scholar-ships for children from more deprived back-grounds. The ratio will be 1:2. The opening of the school had to be postponed by eight months because Malawi moved the beginning of its school year from December to September.

Der gesamtheitliche Bildungsansatz der Schule ist der Roger Federer Foundation sehr wichtig. Daher werden auch der Bau eines Werk- und Musikraums, einer Bibliothek sowie Sport- anlagen finanziert.

Bereits vor der offiziellen Eröffnung der Schule wurde im Sommer 2010 ein zweiwöchiges Fussballtrainingscamp mit 50 Kindern durch-geführt und in Zusammenarbeit mit der Zürcher Hochschule der Künste ein Malworkshop für 30 Kinder veranstaltet. Die Teilnahme war jeweils kostenlos.

Ursprünglich war das Salima-Camp nur für vier Sekundarschulklassen geplant. Um eine nachhaltige Finanzierung der Schule zu garantieren, wurde das Angebot bis zur lokalen Matura ausgeweitet und um zwei Klassen ergänzt. Damit ist die Schule attraktiv für reichere Familien, die Schulgeld bezahlen und damit die Stipendien der Kinder aus armen Bevölkerungsschichten quersubventionieren. Das Verhältnis wird 1:2 betragen. Der Schulstart musste zudem um acht Monate verschoben werden, da Malawi den Schuljahranfang von Dezember auf September verschob.

Im Herbst 2008 erfolgte der Spatenstich für den Sekundarschul-Campus Salima, 100 km östlich der Hauptstadt Lilongwes. Im Sommer 2011 wird die Schule eingeweiht. Mit einem Gesamtbetrag von CHF 168 000 über vier Jahre unterstützt die Roger Federer Foundation den Bau folgender Einrichtungen:S

The campus comprises three schoolhouses, each with two classrooms, a computer room with 20 PCs, a music room, a library with reading room, a chemistry laboratory, three student residences, eight teachers’ houses and an admin- istration block.

A good education is a comprehensive educa-tion. Eight Malawian teachers, all with degrees from Malawian universities, challenge and support boys and girls alike, following the standard Malawi National Examinations Board (MANEB) curriculum. Subjects covered include math, English, English literature, the Chichewa language, physics, chemistry, biology, geography, history, business and social studies, agriculture, life skills, and Bible studies.

The school offers practical training weeks in music, football, athletics, and art for students and children living close to the campus. The work is carried out in collaboration with experts from Switzerland such as the Swiss artist Dominique Lämmli, who teaches at Zurich University of the Arts.

The school has been educating the first four classes at secondary school level since September 2011. Of the 50 students, 10 receive scholarships. This number is set to grow to 100 students in the next few years. To cover its operational costs, one-third of the school’s pupils need to be fee-paying.

Thanks to the cross-financing of lessons through fee-paying pupils from better-off families, the school is also able to open its doors to less privi- leged children. That is a novelty at secondary school level in Malawi. Because the newly opened school has no proven track record, special commit-ment is required to convince fee-paying parents to join the school and to highlight to them the quality of the school.

Das Schulgelände besteht aus drei Schulhäusern mit je zwei Klassenzimmern, einem Informatik-raum mit 20 PCs, einem Musikraum, einer Biblio-thek mit Leseraum, einem Chemielabor, drei Studentenunterkünften, acht Lehrerhäusern und einem Verwaltungsgebäude.

Eine gute Schulbildung ist eine ganzheitliche Ausbildung. Acht malawische Lehrkräfte – alle mit einem malawischen Universitätsabschluss – fordern und fördern die Schülerinnen und Schüler nach dem regulären Schullehrplan MANEB. Dieser umfasst die Fächer Mathematik, Englisch, englische Literatur, die Sprache Chichewa, Physik, Chemie, Biologie, Geografie, Geschichte, Business und Social Studies, Landwirtschaft, Life Skills und Bibelkunde.

Die Schule bietet Praktikumswochen in Musik, Fussball, Leichtathletik oder auch Kunst für die Studierenden und für Kinder an, die in der Nähe des Campus wohnen. Sie arbeitet dabei mit Experten aus der Schweiz, wie beispielsweise mit der Schweizer Künstlerin Dominique Lämmli, Professorin an der Zürcher Hochschule der Künste.

Die Schule unterrichtet seit September 2011 die ersten vier Klassen der Sekundarschulstufe. Von den 50 Studierenden erhalten 10 Stipendien. Diese Anzahl wird in den kommenden Jahren auf 100 Studierende steigen. Für die operationellen Kosten bedarf die Schule eines Drittels zahlender Schulbesucher.

Durch die Querfinanzierung des Schulbetriebs über die zahlenden Schüler aus besser gestellten Familien steht die Schule auch weniger privi legierten Studierenden offen. Das ist ein Novum auf der Sekundarschulebene in Malawi. Die neu eröffnete Schule hat noch keinen Leistungsausweis. Deshalb bedarf es besonderen Engagements, zahlende Eltern von einem Schuleintritt zu überzeugen und ihnen die Qualität der Schule vor Augen zu führen.

Im Sommer 2011 konnte nach vier Jahren Bauzeit der Unterricht im neu errichteten Sekundarschul-Campus in Salima aufgenommen werden. Mit einem Gesamtbetrag von CHF 168 000 unterstützte die Roger Federer Foundation den Bau, um den Zugang zu qualitativ hoch stehender Sekundar-schulbildung auch für finanziell schlechter gestellte Schüler zu verbessern.
