B. Grammar Focus

Directions: Listen and discuss about the use of Much and Many.

  Much and Manyの使い方を練習しましょう。

Much and Many: refer to an amount or a quantity

Many: is used with count nouns, Count nouns are things which can be counted.

That means that there can be more than one of them.

Much: is used with non-count nouns, Non-count nouns (or uncounted nouns) are

usually things which cannot be counted, such as rice or water.

Examples:

Count nouns(use Many) Non-count nouns(use Much)

Use of much / many

• In everyday English, we normally use much / many only in questions and

negative clauses.

Example:

How much money do you have?

Ron does not have many friends.

• In positive clauses with so, as or too, we also use much / many.

Example:

Charles has so many friends.

Alvin has as many friends as Toby.

Francis has too much money.

• In all other positive clauses, however, we prefer expressions like a lot of /
