Design

The F70’s unique, overall design was driven by the input of over 200 service members across multiple defense agencies. The result is two distinctive helmet cuts: Extended (Mid) and Tactical (High), for fit, protection, and operational effectiveness.

Extended Cut

The F70 extended cut geometry maintains the coverage of the legacy Advanced Combat Helmet (ACH), with a new modern, angular design.

The ear coverage has been angled to better support the use of over-the-ear hearing protection and minimize interference when sighting a weapon.

The back of helmet is contoured to hug the back of the head without going too far inward that would restrict body positions (i.e. prone position).

Tactical Cut

The tactical cut removes the extended ear coverage, for reduced weight and increased interoperability with over-the-ear hearing protection headsets.

The curvature of the helmet helps with overall stability, especially when used in conjunction with accessories, such as night vision goggles.

Combined with a modular suspension system and 3M’s adjustable 4-point retention, the helmet is designed for comfort by remaining secure and stable on the head during tactical operations.

Modular & Scalable

The helmet comes standard with accessory rails, night vision goggle shroud, and hook & loop applique to support a wide range of mission critical items.

The extended cut allows for the addition of a mandible and visor for operations where increased facial coverage is sought.

The shroud acts as a mounting point for the visor and the accessory rails have provisions for the mandible to attach. The helmet front angles form a wedge that intuitively allows the end user to locate and lock the position of the mandible and visor.

“No Thru-Holes”

3M’s proprietary seamless molding capability removes the need to drill holes through the helmet by incorporating mounting provisions to the helmet mold that do not penetrate the ballistic laminate. This increases overall shell integrity and eliminates potential secondary projectiles from bolts & fasteners.

Coverage Comparison & Weight

The Helmet Inside Surface Area (HISA) and Projected Protective Area of Helmet (PPAH) (Based on USSOCOM Calculation) demonstrate the F70’s optimized ratio of surface area to protective head coverage.

Utilizing Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) materials, the helmet provides ballistic protection at low weight, to reduce user burden.

Blunt Impact Protection

3M is partnered with D3O® Labs in integrating their shock absorbing, rate sensitive materials with our ballistic solutions. The F70 Ballistic Helmet is tested and evaluated to DOT&E protocol in accordance with AR/PD 10-02, AR/PD 14-01 and GL/PD 09-04 (Latest versions) with D3O® Trust Pad Systems.

D3O® materials are made using a combination of advanced polymer chemistry and cutting-edge design. The materials are soft and flexible, with no compromise on comfort, but react differently when force is applied. The material absorbs and dissipates energy during an impact, reducing the amount of force transmitted to your body compared to standard foams.

Mission Configurable

The F70 Is designed to support a variety of mission profiles with provisions Night Vision Goggles, Oxygen Systems, Strobe Lights, Power, and COMMS.

NVG ShroudThe 3M NVG Shroud come with bungees cords to help improve stability and a provision for a lanyard to help prevent drop or loss.

The 3M Ballistic Helmet F70 has been evaluated and determined suitable for the U.S. Air Force static line and military free fall operations under the Test Parachute Program (TPP).

O2 & Counter-Weight ClipsClipping provisions are provided for NVG counter-weight and O2 system masks. (HAHO/HALO operations)

COMMSThe rail accepts standard 3M | PELTOR™ ARC Adapters and has slot a for the headset cable to route through

Configurable Protection

The F70 modular, scalable design allows for a protective mandible and visor for turret gunners, small military ATVs, and other operations where full facial protection is required. The visor utilizes the NVG Shroud as an attachment point and the mandible locks into attachment provisions on the accessory rail. Both the mandible and visor are easy to attach and remove with simple, single-click designs.

Helmet Accessory Management Cover

3M has collaborated with Agilite Gear to provide a custom helmet cover for the F70 platform. The cover helps reduce signature (by helping prevent light from reflecting off the surface of the helmet) and protects the painted ballistic surface from chips, scrapes, and scratches, that will help increase the service life of the helmet. The cover also supports accessory management for battery packs, counterweights, strobes, cameras, cables, etc. by providing the following:

• Universal rear cell that fits all common Battery Packs/Counterweights

• Integrated cable management channels

• Central bungee retention for IR Strobes, cameras etc.
