July 26, 2012 Island Moon A 11 By Ronnie Narmour [email protected] Three Chords and the Truth Another week has come and gone and I’m amazed that I haven’t actually melted. As it turns out, it’s not the humidity… it’s the HEAT! I could make a lame comparison here and segue into how hot the music has been lately but it’s just to darn hot to mess with it. In my fevered delirium, however, I have managed to escape my air conditioned sanctuary fleetingly to catch a few shows and I’ll tell you all about them. But first, I do have some big news. The great John Prine will play Selena Auditorium on September 22 nd . Wait, it gets better… my hero, Alejandro Escovedo is opening. Believe me, I’ll be all over this one as it gets closer. This is huge. But right now, time’s a wasting… let’s roll! The Deadbeats didn’t suck… The Deadbeats (Corpus Christi, TX) played the Back Porch last Thursday night. This was a date that the Porch management had problems filling for some reason and when they finally did get it booked, it was with a band I’d never heard of. All Susan told me was that it was originally a bunch of lawyers that get together occasionally for fund raisers and such. My first thought was, “really?” To my surprise, these guys were good (in an old farts playing cover songs kind of way.) I was actually pretty impressed. They had a gal up front on vocals who really did have a great voice and a sax player who did a good job. I thought their song selection was nice and varied, balancing old R&B with some rock ballads. I’ve really got to quit being such a music snob (just because I think their name sucks) and start giving these bands a chance. I’d go see these guys again. They’re a pretty good party band and I didn’t hear any clams. Daniel de la Rocha is a Dallas boy… Daniel de la Rocha and the Lion’s Den (Dallas, TX) played the Porch last Friday. This was another artist that I’d also never heard of. I did some digging and found out that he’d got a music degree in jazz and had played sideman for some blues and country bands around Dallas before stepping out front. Dallas is a rough hustle for musicians. It’s a highly polished community of well established artists that really know their stuff… especially in the blues community. There is a long history of blues in Dallas that goes back to Blind Lemon Jefferson, T Bone Walker and Freddy King. Not to mention the present day blues warriors such as Joe Kubek, Bnois King, Jim Suhler, Hash Brown, Tutu Jones, Lucky Peterson, Johnny Reno, Pat Boyack and Randy McAllister who helped to define the Dallas sound. Ask Dave “Bottlehead” Miller, he’ll tell you, if you ever want to play Deep Ellum, JJ’s Blues Bar, The Greeville Bar & Grill, The Bone or Poor David Pub you better know your stuff. When I had my talent agency in the 90’s, I represented a couple of Dallas acts (Marc Benno-- who recorded with the Doors and Leon Russell-- and Mike Morgan and the Crawl) plus I watched all the Oak Cliff boys develop and eventually explode in Austin (Stevie Ray, Jimmy Vaughan, Paul Ray, Denny Freeman, Doyle Bramhall, etc, etc) and I know that you better have spent your time in the wood shed if you expect to go far in that market. It’s fast and slick. And, that’s exactly the impression that I got when I heard Rocha. He’s an excellent musician… clean, fast and slick. He has a high voice and a rockin’ R&B drive that’s very compelling. He played a lot of covers that I couldn’t figure out who’s they were (except for the one Al Green song that he did)… but that’s Dallas talking. They have their own set of rules up there and the music that makes it to the set lists have little to do with the rest of the world. I thought Mr. Rocha did a fine job… in a Dallas sort of way, and that’s no easy task. TWO TONS, TWO TONS… My San Antonio homeboys, Two Tons of Steel, hit town last Saturday and put on one of their classic shows at the Back Porch. The band is led by Kevin Geil on guitar and vocals and features Dennis Fallon on lead guitar, Chris Rhoades on stand up bass and back up vocals and Chris Dodds on drums. I first met them 20 years ago when they called themselves the Dead Crickets. They had to lose that name when the Buddy Holly estate said, “no no.” They have played every Tuesday (more or less) at Gruene Hall for the past 17 years and are a San Antonio institution and play 250 gigs a year all over the world. In short, they have their act down. I couldn’t wait for this gig. I actually showed up really early to make sure I had a table for all my friends. And we danced our collective boodies off. It was a total blast. My personal favorite song they do is the old Ramones tune, I Want to Be Sedated, rockabilly style. The last record they did, Not That Lucky, was produced by the great Lloyd Maines and has a wonderful Fred Eaglesmith song on it, Alcohol and Pills. I’m a total fan and always look forward to the next time they play. It’s nice to know that Gruene Hall isn’t that far away and neither are Tuesdays. TWO TONS, TWO TONS!!! Corpus on a Monday night… For the past couple of weeks, I have been jumping in with my pals, Mr. Mo, Uel Jackson and Dillon Stowe (The Famous Unknowns) and going into Corpus on Monday night to play Antone Perez’s Blues Jam at Doctor Rockits. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a slow night in downtown Corpus but it’s a lot of fun. My old and dear friend from many years ago in San Antonio, Jessica Thomas, was in town this week and jumped in with us. Jessica now lives in Kansas City and works in radio production. When I was president of the Texas Music Association in the 90’s, Jessica worked for NPR and was my vice-president. It’s been a lot of fun catching up since we haven’t seen each other in 15 years… ah, the glory of Facebook. I got to see some new (and different) talent at the jam. Mo and the guys did a great job. We did wander down the street to the House of Rock to catch a little of Neil Edward’s set. He plays a solo version of the latest Americana hits. It was a nice casual evening. DO NOT MISS LIST Tonight, Thursday, July 26 th , Pear Ratz (Corpus Christi, TX) will play the Back Porchthey’re sort of like Ray Wylie Hubbard meets Metallica. Antone and the All Stars are at Dr. Rockits. Trysom are at Scuttlebutt’s and the Free Beer Band are at the Tarpon Ice House. On Friday, the Godfather of Austin Blues, W.C. Clark (Austin, TX) will be at the Back Porch. Uel Jackson will be at the Ice House and Five Card Draw will be at Brewster Street. On Saturday, Austin country music icon, Gary P. Nunn will be at the Porch, Billy Kiesel will be at the Ice House and the House of Rock will be having their 7 th anniversary party with Amplified Heat, The 71’s and Tin Can Phone. Be safe out there! Three Chords and the Truth

Another week has come and gone and I’m amazed that I haven’t actually melted. As it turns out, it’s not the humidity… it’s the HEAT! I could make a lame comparison here and segue into how hot the music has been lately but it’s just to darn hot to mess with it. This is huge. But right now, time’s a wasting… let’s roll!

The Deadbeats didn’t suck…

The Deadbeats (Corpus Christi, TX) played the Back Porch last Thursday night. This was a date that the Porch management had problems filling for some reason and when they finally did get it booked, it was with a band I’d never heard of. All Susan told me was that it was originally a bunch of lawyers that get together occasionally for fund raisers and such.
