EditiorialMy first edition of this newsletter just so happened to coincide with the start of the debate about whether or not to approve a wind turbine in Bodham. My opinion has wavered but one thing that I have felt I should do is understand the truth behind the options.
A friend in our village has sourced all sorts of material about this and it looks at the bigger picture. Whether we like them or not, it would appear that we should approve such structures. Here is the reasoning.
Big businesses make decisions that have enormous implications if they get them wrong so they employ organisations such as Bxxx to investigate and come up with facts that are in no way influenced by political/lobbying motive. They present their findings on energy as follows: But there is a bigger picture re biodiversity, resouces being used up
Church services during the interregnumAfter Michael leaves us, the Benefice enters a period of interregnum (or vacancy) when services will be taken by visiting priests. In the case of Mattins services, these may be read by Churchwardens. We have decided that, from May, there will only be one service each Sunday, and that this will be at 10 am (a compromise between the two current service times). It is a challenging time, and we ask for your prayerful support as we work towards the appointment of our next Rector. The Churchwardens
Village CorrespondentsI’d like to take this opportunity to thank all village correspondents for finding items to be inserted in each newsletter. Two are retiring, namely: Betty Hart and Julie Brown – so thank you especially to them for keeping the news coming in. So, there are now vacancies in both Hempstead and Plumstead.
I welcome items for the newsletter from anyone but there are occasions when it is good to have someone in each village listening out for items that will be of interest to our readers. This can include (but is not limited to) notice of people new to the village or leaving; births, weddings and deaths. If you can fulfil this role in either Plumstead or Hempstead then please contact the editor (details on page 2).
Mobile LibraryThere will be new times for all the locations visited by the Mobile Library Van as of this month, April 2014. The stop on The Street in Baconsthorpe has been cut. The revised times are published on page 2.

Bodham Wind TurbineOn Thursday, 13th March Genatec Ltd held a ‘drop in’ meeting at Bodham Village Hall. The meeting was hosted by David and John Mack who presented their plans to make a new application on the same site for a wind turbine 20m lower than the original turbine application. They also plan to take the recent High Court decision not to allow the original turbine to the Court of Appeal.
PuzzlesA famous mathematician, who lived in the eighteenth century, once said that he was x years old in the year x 2. [Reminder: x 2 means x times x.] In what year was he born?
Last month’s answer There are just three other fractions less than one that work as simply:
1 = 16 = 1 = 19 = 4 = 494 = 64 = 5 = 95 = 8 = 98

Time has again proven my wife right (aren’t they always?) I should have bought a digital camera six years ago, I should have recognised the advances in things like ipads that are able to show the night sky and locate the stars and planets. Maybe now was the time to buy a fully computerised GOTO telescope? I set up my trusty 30 year old mechanical telescope one last time. The wooden tripod legs that I had so lovingly varnished all those years ago still glistened in the fading light. The lumbering black metal mechanical mount still guided the telescope to those distant stars and planets, most of the time, more or less. The old girl was showing her age, she has been a loyal friend all these years but was now barely working, it was time to say goodbye. I packed her away in the footlocker one last time and whispered a sad farewell.I ordered my new computerised telescope and was delighted when it arrived, it looked so smart, all chrome and white painted aluminium. I set it up and keyed in the basic data it needed, and was ready to go. When it was dark enough I placed the telescope on its concrete base, pointed it north and switched on the hand controller. After that all I had to do was enter the date and time, line it up with two stars the computer selected and that was it, ready to go in 2 mins. compared to 30 mins. with the old one. I decided to try out ”Guided Tour, Tonight’s Best” and pressed GOTO. With a busy whirring noise off it went, swivelling the telescope until it aligned on Jupiter and gave a friendly little beep to say it was ready. Jupiter was dead centre in the eyepiece, its dark bands clearly visible and four of its largest moons. Satisfied, I pressed a button and off it went again whirring and buzzing and within a few seconds gave another little beep. This time it had selected the Orion Nebula, one of my favourite astronomical objects and it looked amazing. After that it went to the Perseus Double Cluster, a beautiful sight, billions of stars clustered together like diamonds on black velvet. I was convinced, such ease of use, I should have bought it years ago.Technology is a wonderful thing, it has its place in modern society, but I think it also has its downside, it can make us lazy. I learned astronomy the hard way, using star charts and books, I know what I am looking at and I know my way around the night sky. I remember the thrill of finding those first distant galaxies and the sense of pride it gave me that began a lifelong fascination with the stars. The current generation of young astronomers only need to know how to press a button to see the wonderful sights the heavens have to offer, it is so easy for them. Is this a good thing or a bad thing? Will they be inspired for a lifetime or just a few minutes?

My dear friendsOver and out!
I must have written hundreds of ‘magazine’ letters in the last thirty-one years – and this will be my last one! It marks the end of many years as a Parish Priest. During that time the Church of England has seen many changes and weathered a few storms. Jo and self have loved our years here and thank you all for your friendship and support. For the Benefice it is a new beginning and I know that you will support your new Priest as much as you have supported us. New beginnings are the keynote of Easter. New Life, new hope in and through the Risen Lord.I do hope that you will come to my ‘farewell’ service at Baconsthorpe Parish Church on Wednesday, 30th April at 7pm.Jo joins me in sending love to you all – and a very Happy Easter.
With every blessing.

I read the other day that our dear Queen got a bad press when she declined to take the flowers from her well-wishers after the Sandringham Church service saying that she wanted to go home and have lunch with her family. I know exactly how they felt although my slight contretemps with Her Majesty goes back to 1965.
The Queen every year inspects one Royal Air Force Station. I didn’t quite know what she had done wrong but in 1965 she came to RAF Bicester in Oxfordshire which was a grass airfield very much in the mould of a classic World War II Aerodrome. It was home to 71 MU (Maintenance Unit) and can’t have been a very exciting station. At this time I was a member of the Oxford University Air Squadron (which was just a lodger unit there) in the giddy rank of Acting Pilot Officer (APO)! Obviously we would have to take part in the ceremonies. So a plan was evolved to have our five De Havilland Chipmunk aircraft displayed with an instructor, student and two airmen
beside each aeroplane. The rehearsal was interesting, as all of us officer cadets were sent off the parade ground as improperly dressed. The reason was that none of our hats passed muster. When we were commissioned we received a £5 hat allowance. (Some bright spark suggested that RAF officers’ hats could be purchased for £1.50 down the Charing Cross Road, which left a useful sum to put into the beer kitty). Hats of a better quality were then borrowed from the regular officers.
So came the great day. APO Harmer rigidly at attention on the port (left) side of his aeroplane. Enter Her Royal Highness stage right (starboard). Our commanding officer escorted her down the line, and just as she came into view, he must have said something to her, and as she went past all I saw was the back of her head!
You can’t win them all, can you? I consoled myself with the thought that at least she had spent a fair sum of money teaching me to fly.

ThanksThe Village Hall Committee would like to thank the Parish Council for having 2 Solar Lights installed on the Car Park. They are making the use of the car park much safer for people visiting the Village Hall as well as anyone using the playing field. It is a much-appreciated necessity for all concerned.
LeavingRuth and Frances Clare have left their home at Ten Acres. Both were staunch members of St Mary’s Church and Frances was a valued member of the Benefice Choir. They were great supporters of the Village Hall and, until Ruth’s health sadly deteriorated, could be found running the raffle stall at all the fund raising events. They will be greatly missed and we wish them well.
Farewell..To all our friends in Baconsthorpe and surrounding area. We were sorry not to say good bye to people but many pressures of moving left us unable to tackle many things we would have liked to. We wish that the residents of Ten Acres enjoy life there and are able to involve themselves in village life. We had many happy years in Baconsthorpe and are now looking forward to a new life in West Norfolk. Good wishes for the future to you all. All mail posted to us at Ten Acres is being forwarded. ToadingThe Toadwatch Patrols at both Rookery Pit in Hempstead and Selbrigg are doing sterling work for the safety of toads. A lot of toads are now on their way home and the migration will probably be over by the middle of April. Literally thousands of toads have been moved off the roads and numbers are up on last year at Rookery Pit. Thank you to motorists who have driven with such care in and out of Hempstead, even stopping to move some themselves (special thanks to Amy and Charlotte!).

Speeding in MatlaskeMany of you are aware that at certain times of the day vehicles are speeding through Matlaske. The consequences could be that a child, elderly person or pet are injured. The Police have been approached concerning this and they have attended the village on several occasions to do some traffic monitoring and the speed safety van has also attended. The advice from PCSO Gary Baxter is that Matlaske need to form a Community Speed Watch Team to help alleviate this issue. Matlaske Parish Council would ask you to consider participating in speed checks on a voluntary basis. ChurchwardensAfter a remarkable stint of no less than 28 years Thomas Wormald is now retiring as churchwarden of St Michaels and All Saints. He and John Durdin became churchwardens at the same time and have worked tirelessly looking after and restoring our lovely church. It has never looked better and we are very grateful. John Durdin is continuing in the role and we welcome Eleanor Faulkner as the new churchwarden. We wish her well in her new position.

Ivo Inglis of Hole Farm, Hempstead has recently been the subject of a Norfolk Church’s conundrum.
Whilst exploring in a friend’s wood over the Christmas holidays, he saw something glint among the leaves which caught his eye. He pulled something large out of the earth which turned out to be a gold Chalice! His father at first dismissed it as being brass but on closer inspection it had ‘tell tale’ hall marks. Much detective work followed by the parents of the boys over lunch, which revealed that it was a Chalace made in 1846 by Keith, a specialist at the time in Church silver. The Chalice turned out to be made of Silver Gilt hence the fact it looked gold and was in fact gold-plated silver.
The Chalice was then handed to the Police as we assumed it must have been stolen. Unsure about how much time the police would have to trace its owner the Inglises contacted the Diocese who put them in touch with Mr Nigel Bumphrey, an experienced silversmith and a terrier when it

comes to tracking down owners of ‘misplaced’ Church Plate (he reunited Hunstanton with its stolen silverware). He checked the Ecclesiastical Insurance records; the stolen-arts register; contacted the V & A Museum to see if Keith had a sale record for the Chalice with a named Church as the purchaser; asked the Catholic Church in Norfolk and Suffolk; and had an email sent out by the Diocese to all Church Wardens.
Finally, the very grateful Church Wardens at Skeyton Church near North Walsham happily came forward. It had been stolen two years previously and had presumably been thrown out of a vehicle into the edge of the wood and been covered by leaves and vegetation
Ivo was very kindly given a book token by the Church Wardens in thanks for his eagle eyes! Mr Bumphrey has found some grants that are available for Church silver restoration so it is hoped that it will now be restored to its former glory and put back into good use!
