Hello Everyone
I hope you all had a good summer. We’re back with
a very full Newsletter this month. Sorry if your
submitted piece does not appear, as there was not
enough room for them all, including the promised
second part of the historical piece about the opening

with the others.
Tickets are now on sale for the Barn Dance which we are hosting on 8th

Temple Ewell PlayersTemple Ewell Players
We are very pleased to announce the ‘Junior Players’! They are
our newly established youth section aged between 6 – 13 years
of age, who will be joining us in our three part production running
from Thursday 22nd September to Saturday 24th September.
We will be presenting ‘World Premiere’, ‘Blue Suede Blues’ and ‘T factor’, a diverse
mix guaranteed to provide entertainment for all tastes.
The comedy ‘World Premiere’ revolves around the technical rehearsal of a local
dramatic society with some of the scenarios being very familiar to those in the Am
Dram world.
We follow the antics of Grace and Lily in ‘Blue Suede Blues’ who decide to spice
up their nursing home existence by kidnapping one of the care assistants with
hilarious results.
‘T factor’ is loosely based on ‘X factor’ and the content has been decided by the
Junior Players themselves. The production includes a range of popular songs from
‘Rocking Robin’ by the Jackson Five to ‘Shake it off’ by Taylor Swift.
Please come along for what promises to be a fantastic production and to support
the Junior Players’ hard work and enthusiasm. Tickets are £6.50 and on sale at
The Fox Pub. We can also divulge that this year’s pantomime will be ‘Ali Baba and
the 40 Thieves’ running from 22nd to 29th January. More details to come!

School Fete 25th June 2016School Fete 25th June 2016
The 25th June saw our Annual School Fete on George V playing field, and what
an amazing day we all had! The field was jam packed with volunteers, performers,
games, inflatables, local groups, and local businesses ready to entertain and sell
their wares.
The children from the school performed fantastically with their Olympic themed
dances, and the arena was alive with displays of drumming, singing, keep fit, routines,
and various forms of dancing from Jiving to Hip Hop!
A little (well ok, big!) downpour of rain had us all drenched but still smiling as,
undeterred by the weather, DODS youngsters performed Elf in the arena, and
looked to be thoroughly enjoying it! True Professionals!
I cannot thank you all enough for the wonderful support received by the village,
from the generosity during the tombola collection, to the £3120.71 total figure
raised for our lovely school. It was a truly fantastic village event, and everyone
played an important part.
7
I would also like to express my gratitude to Colin Smith and Jane Coulson-Wright
of the Parish council for their support before and on the day, Chris Padfield for
once again wheeling round the barrow all day, John and Marilyn Holness, Jan and
the ladies at the WI, Jenny Olpin and the Temple Ewell Newsletter, Temple Ewell
Players, DODS, Fr Paul, Jenny Miles and the Church, Chris and Judith Shilling,
Kelly Freelove for making an amazing cake for us to guess the weight of, and to
Elwin End who, on the morning of the fete, opened his property up for parking, to
save congestion in the village. (i'm also told he acted as a transfer service,
driving disabled drivers right to the gate!) And of course a massive thanks to each
and every one of our helpers, volunteers, stall holders, cake bakers, mums, dads,
children, teachers, the wonderful Mr Morris, and to all of you for coming and
supporting us! We couldn't do it without you
We would also like to thank wonderful sponsors for their financial support:

success. We had a record number of entries in all sections

the number of members and friends. You are the Best! Our next event is the

For those who come to our shows and think "I have something that good" why
don't you let us see it? We are always on hand to help you stage your exhibit if it
is your first time.

During the summer on a sunny afternoon we enjoyed a delicious
cream tea in Jan's delightful garden. We also had an outing to
Tenderden and travelled on the train, enjoying a ploughman’s lunch or
another cream tea.
Our next meeting will be on September 8th. We’ll be welcoming Claire who will be
talking about her experiences in Camp Bastion. There is a keep fit session on
September 15th 7-8pm. Any ladies are welcome to join us (very gentle exercises)
and we’ll be serving refreshments afterwards.

We have been very busy at our allotment and have been given
a brand new greenhouse - a big thank you to Ray! We are
really looking forward to putting it up and growing even more
next year. We are now paying members of the
Gardeners Club so we will now be exhibiting
in their shows. Friday Club have been buy-
ing our produce which means we now have
enough money for next year's seeds. Thanks
Friday club! Tiffany won first prize for her
jam tarts in the summer show, so well done
Tiff.
We have a new member, Ross, who we have welcomed into our group. We visited
Mudpie in Folkestone recently and made pottery items. We took Callum in the
Folkestone cliff lift however his wheelchair didnt fit so unfortunately we couldn't get
out at the bottom, but we still enjoyed it.
Our recent quiz night raised just over £200 which will pay the balance of our next
holiday to Camber Sands. Thank you to everyone that supported us. We went to
London and spent a day in Covent Garden. A big thank you to Jo from me for
arranging for me to drive a train from Ramsgate to Dover. I was very nervous but
I really loved it! We took part in the Publican Walk for the Fox; we all dressed up
and raised around £200. We won a silver plaque for our fancy dress!
We have a trip arranged to Sheperdswell Steam Railway to see Richard in his work
placement. We are looking forward to a train ride and will let you know next month
how we got on. Richard Grayson
WillowsWillowsWe all enjoyed the BBQ at Marilyn's house. We had fun when
we entered Deal Carnival. We dressed up in Hawaiian
coustumes and out of 62 entrants we won the Mercury Spirit of
the Carnival Award which was great! We visited Branching Out's
allotment which was very interesting.
A big thank you to everyone who voted
for us for the Heart of the Community
Awards. We came runner up and received a donation of
£500! We have purchased a small cooker which is in the
downstairs hall kitchen. The rest of the money will help to
pay for the bus when we have our trips out. In September
we are entering Aylesham Carnival and will let you know
how we got on next month.

I wonder if DODS might consider staging ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ again? When they
presented it in the late 1990’s (a time of much ethnic intolerance darkening our
world) the production was moving and poignant indeed, and might it be that sadly
now in our own country racism is raising it’s ugly head? I hope not, but because
of holidays, preparing this quite some time ahead, as I write, there have been
some worrying signs.
“It’s true that we are the chosen people. But once in a while can’t you choose
someone else?”
Those who are familiar with ‘Fiddler’ will know that the leading character, the
Jewish dairyman, ‘Tevye’ speaks regularly to God throughout the story and usually he
is irreverently complaining about the injustices God seems to be handing him out.
But in the closing scene, as the various characters we have come to know are
forced to leave their village to face an uncertain future, Tevye is the last to go.
Turning to look up to the same place above where he has directed his frequent
comments to God, with a jerk of the head Tevye makes the request to God ‘Come
with me.....’
A Jewish Prayer for us all and the hope that goodness and tolerance will prevail in
our land.
‘When all within is dark,
And former friends misprise;
From them I turn to You,
And find love in Your eyes.
15
When all within is dark,
And I my soul despise;
From me I turn to You,
And find Love in Your eyes.
When all Your face is dark,
And Your just angers rise;
From You I turn to you,
And find Love in Your eyes.
(Israel Abrahams, based on Ib: Gabirol)

PRESSING MATTERS
“Time for bed” said the pillow to the sheet
“We have a very pressing day ahead.
In the morning when she awakes
she’ll lift us up, shake us up and remake the bed.
But that comes after we’ve gone for a spin
on a cycle that will be quite hot.
It’ll make us giddy and I daresay we’ll take a tumble
in something that makes a din.
But if it’s fine, perhaps we’ll hang around outside
and later, perhaps take a ride
on something called an ironing board
possibly getting flattened by something with a cord.
But then, it’s not a bad life, y’know
just expected to be clean and tidy
fresh and clean, with straight lines all in a row.
Here she comes, in a grubby nightie!”

HOW TO DEAL WITH FAILURE?
One of the lovely memories of this summer was attending a school sports day. The
field was full of excited children and fond parents and grand-parents as well as the
hard working teachers. The events were well organised and there were proper
races consisting of running, skipping, sack races, egg and spoon races etc. There
was much excitement and resulting winners and losers. This was in contrast to a
non competitive sports day, attended some years ago, when there were
no winners or losers and the children looked very bored.
What particularly stands out about this day, was not the understandable delight of
the winners but the reaction of the losers. One lad, who was obviously not
athletic, finished with a big grin on his face and applause from the crowd. He
had succeeded in crossing the finishing line albeit in a comfortable last place.
Another boy bringing up the rear in the sack race, finished with a flourish by throwing
himself over the finishing line. The school should be commended for teaching the
children about real life, winners and losers and how to deal with both.
The recent spectacular Olympic Games in Brazil had many medals given out and
many National Anthems played but the medallists were only a very small
proportion of those who had taken part. Failure to win does not mean that the
experience cannot be one of gain.
The tragic spectacle of anyone living on the streets is a sad portrayal of
a multitude of problems which have overpowered the unfortunate individual. The
experience of failure is palpable. There is no shortage of failure but there is an
inability to deal with failure. How do we deal with failure?
One essential factor in becoming a Christian is to recognise that you have failed
and need a Saviour which is a good starting point in any of our lives. The way the
Bible expresses it is "That all have sinned (or failed) and come short of God's glory.

Dover District Council is urging residents to respond to Kent County
Council’s consultation on its draft Local Transport Plan 4, and to have
their say on proposals for making the A2 a dual carriageway all the way to Dover.
Cllr Nigel Collor, Cabinet Member for Access, said: “Recent events have once
again demonstrated the lack of resilience in the road network to Europe’s busiest
ferry port. This is having a massive effect on the lives of local people and holding
back the regional and national economy.
“We must keep the pressure up on central Government to fund the upgrading of
the A2 and making it a dual carriageway all the way to Dover. This would link with
the plans for the Lower Thames Crossing which will see more traffic using the A2.
“What we need is joined-up thinking from Government to realise the potential of
improvements to the A2, and how it can address future growth in port traffic, as well
as supporting the wider growth and regeneration agenda in Dover and East Kent.”
As well as dualling sections of the A2 between Lydden and the Eastern Docks,
Dover District Council is also calling for improvements to the Duke of York’s round-
about, Brenley Corner, and the M2 (Junction 5) and M20 (Junction 7), the key
points at which the two motorways intersect.
Residents can view the draft Local Transport Plan 4: Delivering Growth Without
Gridlock 2016-2031, and complete a short questionnaire by 30 October 2016 on

Russell Gardens & Kearsney Abbey secure £3 million investment
Two of Dover’s most popular parks are to benefit from £3 million from the Heritage
Lottery Fund (HLF) and Big Lottery Fund to restore their unique landscapes and
heritage, and to improve facilities. The plans, developed by Dover District Council,
include:
Restoring Thomas Mawson’s design for Kearsney Court and picturesque
landscape features in Kearsney Abbey
Recreating Kearsney Abbey’s historic role as a cultural venue, attracting
new audiences to the parks
Celebrating the parks’ unique heritage including mills, ecology, people and
landscapes through new activities and interpretation
Creating a multi-use extension to the grade II listed billiards room in
Kearsney Abbey to facilitate new education, training and volunteering
programmes
A key feature of the plans include restoration of the formal gardens at Kearsney
Court (now known as Russell Gardens), designed by Thomas Mawson in c.1901.
Designed in the Arts and Crafts style, Russell Gardens features a series of terraces
cascading down the hillside and culminating in the magnificent canal in the valley
bottom, with ornamental bridges and a boathouse set among mature trees.
Russell Gardens is Grade II listed and has been a public park since 1951.
Thomas Mawson (1861-1933) is widely regarded as the first of the great
landscape architects. His career took him from garden design to worldwide
acclaim as an urban designer. He became the first President of the Institute of
Landscape Architects in 1929. Russell Gardens is a rare example of his work in
the south of England.
Like Russell Gardens, Kearsney Abbey was also once a grand country estate and
has been a public park since 1945. Built from 1820-1822, the Grade II
listed billiards room is all that remains of the former Gothic revival manor house.
As part of the project, an extension to the building will facilitate new education,
training and volunteering programmes designed to increase awareness and under-
standing of the heritage and ecology of the parks.
29
The picturesque landscape of Kearsney Abbey includes sweeping lawns, avenues,
lakes, islands, fountains and trees designed to enhance the natural beauty of the
location with controlled views.
Both parks share strong links with Dover’s industrial heritage. The River Dour, an
ecologically rare chalk stream, runs through both the parks and powered a num-
ber of flour and paper mills. The remains of River Paper Mill can still be seen in
the grounds of Kearsney Abbey. It was Dover’s wealthy industrialists and
businessmen who developed the country estates that were the forerunners of
today’s public parks.
The project will also recreate the parks’ role as a cultural venue by restoring the
open air theatre which was a feature of Kearsney Abbey during the 1951 Festival
of Britain.
Since we heard that our £3.1m Heritage Lottery Fund bid was successful, we’ve
been busy planning the next phase of the Kearsney Parks project.
Join our team!
We will shortly be recruiting for a full time Community Engagement Officer and part
time Project Officer to help deliver activities, events, monitoring and evaluation. If
you are interested in joining the Kearsney Parks team, please sign up for job alerts
at www.dover.gov.uk/jobs or follow us on Twitter @Kearsneyparks
Quilting project
Could you help us to share the fascinating history of the parks by creating a panel
for the Kearsney Quilt? Come along to the Dover District Council offices (HMS
Brave meeting room) on Wednesday 21 September at 1.30pm to meet the other
volunteers involved and to find out more.
Research project
We also need some help uncovering the hidden history of Kearsney Abbey and
Russell Gardens. If you’re interested in volunteering for the project and could help
us to find out more about the parks’ role in paper making, WW2 and/or the Festival
of Britain, please get in touch at [email protected]

deliver, you can now find our Activity Plan on our website.

Dear Editor
We at Branching Out are really enjoying working on our allotment. We go there
four times a week but always have to clear the dogs’ mess up off the path.
There is a bin to use. Some of us are not very sure-footed and it makes dodging
the poo a bit hazardous.

Friday Club Friday Club Although we closed for the whole of August we were still
preparing for the coming months. The 29th of July was our
last meeting and we ended with a game of Skittles down at
the Fox with hotdogs and chips for lunch. The weather was
lovely so a fun afternoon was had by all.
Sadly we lost one of our members Reg Watson and our condolences go out
to his family.
We are hoping everyone enjoyed their summer holidays but are now back to
our usual business, preparing the events programme for the Autumn and
Christmas. I have been in touch with the Fire Service and hoping
(although not yet confirmed) that one of their colleagues will come along on
9th September to give a talk on fires within the home. Anyone is welcome to
attend.
On 16th September we are having a Ploughman's Lunch. This is always well-
supported. If you would like to come along on a Friday our doors are always
open for new faces. There is no age limit so come and see for yourself and
enjoy a game of bingo.Until next time bye for now.

On Saturday 18 June I went to Gillwell Scout Park Adventure day. It
was a lovely day and I went on different things than last year - slides
and rope climbing. I went around with my friends from
Shepherdswell Brownies and had a great time. Nicole
In June we carried on doing our Spring Paws Badge by going up the hills to fly our
kites again and Brown Owl had some bubble tubes for us to fly and chase. On the
way up to the hills we saw a Foxglove, Wild Strawberry again, Evening Primrose,
Ox-Eye daisy or Dog Daisy and Pyramidal Orchids and we had a quiz on items
around us. We liked going up the hills. Willow and Fleur
In July we went Geo-caching in the Abbey and Russell Gardens. This is using a
GPS-enabled mobile phone to find locations on a local area map to find a box or
tin (called a geo-cache) which is marked on the map. When we found them we put
in an old Brownie Badge and took out what was there. We did this with each one.
We also had to sign a piece of paper to say how we had found the caches. Thank
you Mr Adams, Nicole’s dad, for helping us. Delphi and Daisy
In July we made items for the flower show. The new term starts on Friday 9th
September for girls 7+. We would like some help at Brownies - please come along
to the Baptist Church on 9th September if you can help or phone Ann 827138.

All at Sea with Rosie-Ann
(A true story)
Black Watch Cruise Ship sailed from Dover 25th July to the Azores/Madeira and
Lisbon. We were enjoying our holiday, wonderful entertainment in the evening and
plenty going on during the day for those who wanted to be
active in mind or body . Personally I was quite happy
talking, swimming, drinking and eating (the food was
very good) and it was interesting listening to people's
life stories, one lady had been brought up on a farm and
had married a farmer, she had one son who didn't want
to carry on after his father died, so she had sold given
her son a million pounds, bought herself a flat and then
went on the cruise, the fated Black Watch . She also
owned race horses, steeplechasers . So I might have a
little bet later in the year.
It was 1st July about 7am when I was laying in bed thinking the air conditioner isn't
working I can't breath, so got out of bed threw some cloths on and went out of the
cabin to go up on deck to get some air. That was when the Fire door closed on
me as I went along the passage to the lift, I banged and shouted the door opened
and six men in white overalls who were pulling a hose along said , "Go, Go, Ma'am
Go! ... I didn't need telling something was wrong. I was on Deck 3, Fire Alert was
sounded and they started knocking on cabin doors telling people to go to deck 6 -
Fire alert in Auxiliary engine room empty your cabins now. A generator had burnt
out owing to fuel leakage which caused untold damage to the ships electrical
wiring, the ship had issued a MayDay, the crew had gone to lifeboat stations - the
ship had no power, no sanitation, no lights, no hot or cold water. The ship’s
emergency generator cut in, only lasted 50 mins. 9.30am the ship was in total dark-
ness and two cabins were completely burnt out.
The captain just said , "a small incident was being dealt with" and he told us to
keep smiling. But word went round, that two engines had burnt out, we could tell
from the black smoke something drastic had happened. We were told later that
we were adrift in the Atlantic for 12 hours and listing at 17.5 degrees, the fire last-
ed nearly 4 hours. The Galley did a first class job to provide food for everyone,
sandwiches for breakfast, lunch and tea and cold drinks.
On a lighter note, when it was announced that everyone should use their own
cabin toilets, I went to see the manager and said that there was no way I could go
down and up all those stairs. So two men gave me a fireman’s lift to the 9th deck
where I was in absolute luxury with my own lifeboat. I had trouble trying to stay in
the bed that night owing to the listing though. On the Friday we limped into
Funchel Madiera and all but 32 of us were flown home to the UK on the Saturday.
38
We were the lucky 32, we had a week in C. Ronaldo's hotel which had only been
open 4 days. I had a room with a balcony overlooking the sea. Fred Olsen paid all
expenses, bed and breakfast at 180 euros a night, and gave us 200 euros for our
evening meal. My son opened my mail back home and photographed a cheque
covering the whole of the amount I had paid for the two week cruise!
We were brought back home on the cruise ship Boudicca. I had an outside cabin
on the 4th deck. We went to Lisbon and Oporto, then 3 days cruising to Greenock
in Scotland. The food and entertainment were excellent
and the Scottish people very friendly. I had a ball even
took part in the people's show - what a laugh! To top it
all Fred has even given us all the offer of 50% off the
next cruise. We have been treated very well indeed.
Thank you Fred (but it was a bit scary).
