MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF CA SRI LANKA

Innovation gives life to business in a constantly evolving world. Innovation is a necessity to drive business growth in today’s challenging economic environment to help accomplish long term success.

Every year, the National Conference of Chartered Accountants sets new benchmarks in the business world by organizing the conference to revolve around topical and unique themes which are both current and constructive to the corporate world.

This year too, taking cue from our previous themes, the 34th National Conference of Chartered Accountants will revolve around the inspiring theme of ‘Innovate to Grow’, a topic which is both timely and relevant in today’s context.

As always, the National Conference of Chartered Accountants has been an event which has not only set precedence among the corporate world in Sri Lanka, but has always been a platform for the exchange and dissemination of important deliberations which are then put to action.

The impact of the Chartered Accountants’ Annual Conference is shown from its significant participation, which not only includes chartered accountants but also a large number of corporate leaders in the country who steer the business world in Sri Lanka.

In our 34th year, the National Conference has undoubtedly become the most prestigious and important event in our institute’s annual calendar and one of the most awaited events in the corporate world.

Over the years, the role and scope of the chartered accountant has revolutionized to great proportions. Today an impressive number of our 4300 members play a remarkable role in helping change the business landscapes of this nation, and therefore I am certain this year’s conference will be an important platform to help participants deliberate on the importance of innovation and how they can utilize innovation to bring long term accomplishments.

MESSAGE FROM THE NATIONAL CONFERENCE CHAIRMAN ANDTHE NATIONAL CONFERENCE TECHNICAL COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN

“Innovation is one of the most powerful ways to drive business growth in today’s challenging environment. The capacity to innovate and bring products and processes successfully to markets will be a crucial determinant to maintain the global competitiveness of nations and organizations. To create a pervasive culture of innovation, a fusion of Innovative Ideologies, Technology and Entrepreneurship must take place and should be accepted by the customers, society and organizations.

The business community should be inspired to focus on practical solutions and to lead companies and employees to innovate boldly and manifest their full potential. This will stimulate the creation of new products and spur sustainable economic growth revitalizing companies, community and the country.

With this visionary ideology in mind, the 34th National Conference of the Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka will navigate the apt theme – “Innovate to Grow” scheduled to be held from the 24th to 26th October 2013 at the Waters Edge, Battaramulla. Inaugurated by Mr. R. C. Bhargava, Chairman, Maruti Suzuki India Limited, the Chief Guest and the Keynote Speaker will be Hon. Ruth Richardson, former Finance Minister of New Zealand.

The technical sessions will feature an eminent panel of both local and foreign experts who will edify the participants with insights in innovations that have helped grow various spheres of business. Chartered Accountants play a vital role in the boardrooms as well as in operations. Our intention is to provide the membership a platform to interact and transform the role they play in the business domain into a higher standard of performance.

The National Conference of Chartered Accountants, in its history that spans over three decades, marked a milestone last year with a fresh initiative to transmit the entire Conference on a webcasting platform. Through this initiative, we are glad to have facilitated our members’ participation in this conference, from wherever they are. With the overwhelming response received last year from our overseas members and members from distant areas of Colombo, we are encouraged to provide them with a better experience this year.

In this light, we believe that the conference will be an intellectually stimulating and socially rewarding flagship event. We look forward to your participation.”

The National Conference of Chartered Accountants is undoubtedly one of the most sought after corporate events in the country.

With a history spanning over three long decades, the national conference has progressed to be a highly acclaimed business summit that provokes thoughts and spurs insights into broad economic and business issues.

As the national body of accountants, we believe it is our responsibility to provide leadership and insight to the accounting and finance professions in the country and I believe the annual national conference is a perfect platform to fulfil this important objective.

The importance of this event has been endorsed by the consistently increasing number of participants who gather for this annual flagship event.

Every year our conference sees an overwhelming participation with over 1000 chartered accountants including corporate leaders, and decision makers taking

part in the conference. The event is further reinforced with the participation of well-versed local and foreign experts who talk on broad based topics with the ultimate aim of helping our 4300 members become more progressive professionals in helping drive businesses across the country.

This year’s conference held for the 34th year will focus on ‘Innovate to Grow,’ a theme which will inspire participants about the importance of innovation and how accountants too can apply innovation to their work, which will ultimately lead to growth at a professional level, a corporate level as well as at a national level.

I am certain this year too, the 34th National Conference of Chartered Accountants organized by CA Sri Lanka will undoubtedly be an inspiring event, setting precedence towards ensuring accomplishment across all quarters by utilizing innovation for greater success.

I wish the conference and its participants all success.

Ruth was first elected to Parliament in 1981. During the party’s opposition years she held the position of Shadow Minister of Education from 1984 to 1987. In 1987 Ruth was promoted to the position of Shadow Minister of Finance and developed the economic policy that National took into government to secure the economic recovery.

National won Government in 1990, and within weeks after Ruth was appointed Minister of Finance she took decisive corrective action with an economic package involving major fiscal corrections; deregulation of the labour market; recommitment to price stability the 0 - 2% contract with the Central Bank and early initiatives in redesigning social policy.

By July 1993 New Zealand had recorded eight quarters of positive growth and was heading for a fiscal surplus in the 1993/1994 year along with the first credit upgrade in 10 years. On the back of those reforms the economy grew by 20% and New Zealand recorded the highest rate of job growth in the OECD.

The manufacturing sector has undergone a tumultuous decade: developing economies leaped into the first tier of manufacturing nations, a severe recession choked off demand, and manufacturing employment fell at an accelerated rate in advanced economies. Yet, manufacturing remains critically important to both the developing and the advanced world. In the developing world, it continues to provide a pathway from agriculture to increased income levels and improved living standards. In the advanced world, it remains a vital source for innovation and competitiveness, contributing to research & development, exports, and productive growth. Innovation involves constant rejuvenation and effective market creation. This session focuses on the evolution of the manufacturing sector, stemming from innovation, and how innovation could help Sri Lanka take itself to the next level in terms of manufacturing.

SESSION 1 INNOVATION IN ACTION

Innovation and leadership are closely related. Visionary leaders establish fertile grounds within organisations for innovative ideas to originate and flourish. They play a key role in getting rid of the innovation stifles - heavy bureaucracy and hurdles, risk averseness or loading people with so much work that they barely have time to think, let alone envision something new. Innovation springs from a culture that encourages everyone to come forth with new ideas. Effective leaders are able to inculcate trust amongst employees, enabling improvement in communication and acceleration of productivity, as attention is redirected towards team objectives. Trust would boost employee confidence enabling a culture to induce innovation. This session highlights the role of leadership in driving innovation.

Due to globalization and economic liberalization, organizations face fierce competition from their global counterparts. Therefore, innovation is no longer an option but an integral part of their business strategy. In a complex and highly competitive global market, companies have to innovate and develop commercially viable products and services faster than ever. To meet these new challenges, companies adopt new approaches to their innovation strategies and processes. Confronted with increasing global competition and rising research and development (R&D) costs, companies can no longer survive on their own R&D efforts but look for new, more open, modes of innovation. This session will look at the increasing importance of open innovation in a company’s involvement in international marketing, and the role of policymakers in creating a conducive environment that promotes innovation.

New generations of internet applications and social media services feature personalised content and offer the ability to exchange data and media with other users. The emergence and popularity of online social networks in recent years have changed the internet ecosystem. In today’s highly competitive environment, innovation has become inevitable inorder to create value and spur growth. However, creating additional value through innovation may not be always commercially viable; therefore, the risk of failure is an inherent aspect of innovation. The success of innovation depends on the design skills of its engineers, upon the effectiveness with which it can mobilize, apply, and develop its distinctive knowledge as circumstances change. Identifying, analysing and managing these risks (market, technology, environment, and organisation related risks) will lead to effective decision making in various innovation projects. How best organisations manage innovation will be dependent on how best they manage the associated risks. The focus of this session will be the role of professionals in innovation process and particularly in managing risk aspect.

SESSION 5 - MANAGING RISKS IN INNOVATION

Presented by:

In spite of the increasing importance of the service sector, which is now of major importance in many countries of the world, the issue of how to stimulate and manage innovation in the service sector remains a conundrum. In the service sector, customer interaction plays a key role apart from the product itself. Therefore, innovation in service companies is not only about “what” is being offered but also about “how” it is being offered in order for it to be accepted by the customer. Consequently, in the service sector, improving on the innovation performance has been an integral part of their business strategy and in crafting a distinctive competitive advantage. The panel discussion would identify how innovation impacts various sectors of the service industry, including financial services.
