CHURCH OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD

FROM OUR PASTOR

“REMEMBER YOU ARE DUST AND TO DUST YOU SHALL RETURN.” This Wednesday, Ash Wednesday, is the day we Christians attend our own funerals. The liturgy reminds us of our own demise, heard in those words above. It is inescapable. But the realities of our culture and our world sometimes run afoul of the expectations that the season of Lent places before us. Every advertisement for wrinkle-removing cream just amplifies our cultural sanctification of youth and the denial of our own mortality. The imposition of ashes and the reminder that we came from and will return to dust has a sobering effect. When we gather and rub ashes on each other’s foreheads, we are participating in an act of recreation. Like the dust that God first breathed life into, the ashes smeared across our foreheads are a visible reminder that we were created from nothing. That may be another way of saying that the only barrier standing between us and nothingness…is God! That, I think, is the most liberating piece of Good News we can ever hear. We’ll come together on Wednesday and see in ourselves and each other the desire we all have for the almighty to wash, purge, and recreate our broken lives. The truth of Ash Wednesday is that restoration and grace do not come without grief. For our hearts to heal, we must first be honest about their brokenness. The forty days of Lent dare us to live each moment as if we belonged to God, to take each breath as a gift, and to give up the foolish notion that we are the ones who bring about our own salvation. These days are opportunities for us to proclaim that the Church is a place for those who are desperate, that we trust in a God who leaves a fingerprint on our foreheads, a God who breathes life into our dust, a God who will not rest until we are transformed.

LENTEN REGULATIONS: Ash Wednesday, ALL Fridays in Lent, and Good Friday are days of abstinence from meat for those 14 years of age and older.

WEST MIDDLESEX, PA Ash Wednesday & Good Friday are also days of fasting for those ages 18-58 inclusive. (On these days, those bound by the law of fasting may take one full meal. Two smaller meals, sufficient to maintain strength according to one’s needs, are also permitted. Eating between meals is not permitted. But liquids are allowed. When health or work is seriously affected, the law does not oblige.) STATIONS OF THE CROSS will be every Friday during Lent beginning this Friday Feb. 16th at 7:00 pm. Come as a family to make them part of your Lenten journey. CATHOLIC HEART YOUTH CAMP Yes, we’re participating in this program again this year and already over 200 kids from all over the country are signed up to attend this event in July in Oil city. The dates are July 22-27. Reservations were made already and invitations to our students/chaperones are going out this week. As you may remember, the students fundraise within the parish – and beyond – to help subsidize their “tuition” for this outreach service activity. Parishioners: if you would like to make a donation toward the work camp, make the check payable to Good Shepherd Ch., send it to the office noting it is for Catholic Heart Workcamp. More to come.
