Dense, persistent contrails over the base at take-off made assembly difficult. Twenty-six B-17s dropped 226 500-lb. G.P. M43 bombs on the target from 25,000 and 24,000 feet. Bombing was visual with fair results. No enemy aircraft were seen. Friendly fighter support was excellent. Moderate and accurate flak was encountered at the IP and it was intense and accurate at the target. Nine aircraft sustained major and sixteen, minor flak damage. From the book "25 Milk Runs" by Richard R. "Dick" Johnson

My diary for this day reads: "Leipzig, Germany (Hot place). Aircraft plant for Me-109s. Flak was intense, accurate. Lost another wing-man (Lt. Roy). direct burst broke himin two at waist. No one was seen to get out. Saw other planes go down. Some in flames. No more like this for me--thanks."

During our crossing of the North Sea we received a recall order and the 379threturned to base along with our "Clover Leaf." Our leader was not able to identify thesender of the recall order, even though it was given in authentic language, so wecontinued on the mission. It was a favorite trick of the Germans to send phony radiomessages to try to disrupt our missions. It seldom worked, but today it was partiallysuccessful if that is what really happened.

Our group started with nineteen planes, but were down to fifteen before we evengot into enemy territory. As we approached the IP, the message for visual bombing wasreceived, and we started taking interval for group bombing. It was about this time that adirect burst of flak tore Lt. Roy's "My Yorkshire Dream" in half at the waist. We saw noparachutes, but found out later that the ball turret gunner, Sgt. L.K. Black, had managedto get out of his turret and snap on his chute while the plane was in its death dive. Helater said that the bombardier managed to get out also, but his chute didn't open properly.Sgt. Black said that 1st Lt. L.E. Weiss went past him with a "streamer" and was never ableto open the chute properly. Sgt. Black was the only survivor of this ill-fated B-17.

The crew of Lt. Roy were on about their sixth mission. In two days, there wereeight empty bunks in our barracks. This is what really brings it home to you. In the combatarea when a plane went down, my reaction was, "Thank God I wasn't over there." It waslater that it hit me that they were truly gone.
