Basic Link Weaknesses• Developing new Cat 5e specifications

revealed some new challenges– Return Loss became a critical parameter that

had not been considered before– Stranded UTP used in patch cables (and cable

tester cords) was found to be very unstable andmajor cause of poor Return Loss performance.

– The Basic Link definition included 4 meters ofcable tester cords in the performance limits,test methods, and test results!

What is a “permanent link”?

• The fixed cabling in the walls – the“permanent” part of the buildinginfrastructure

• The link model to be used for testingthe “fixed” portion of a cablinginstallation

• This excludes users’ patch cables andequipment cords

• This excludes tester adapter cords, too

The purpose of field test• Accurately characterize the fixed portion of the data

• Network equipment, patch cables and equipmentcables are changed many times during the life spanof the fixed portion of the cabling (the infrastructure)

The impact of twisted-pair adapters

• Twisted-pair adapters degrade withhandling and use in the field – ReturnLoss margin can drop significantly

• Permanent links that are good – but closeto the limit – can produce false failures

• Permanent links that are very good canstill yield poor test results – becausetwisted-pair tester adapters contribute toReturn Loss!
