Conventions: Regular & Irregular Verbs

Regular Verbso Most verbs are regular.

o You add -ed to regular verbs to state a past action or when you use a helping verb (has, have, had).

o There are spelling rules that apply to regular verbs when adding -ed.

Irregular Verbso Irregular verbs do not end in -ed when stating a past

action or when paired with a helping verb.

o For most irregular verbs, the word changes.

o When irregular verbs are paired with a helping verb (has, have, or had) it is called a past participle.

I ride my bicycle.

He eats ice cream.

We fall.

What Kind of Verb Is It ?

o Use today and yesterday to help determine past tense.

o Add -ed ? Then it’s a regular verb!

o Change the word? Then it’s an irregular verb!
