GOLDILOCKS AND THe THRee BeARS is a traditional telling of the story, with a positive twist at the end as Goldilocks apologizes to the bears and makes up for her misdeeds.

CONTRASTING SIZe — HIGH AND LOW: To illustrate musical contrast between large, medium, and small, the three bears are identified by a shared theme, simple and direct, but played quite differently by each of them. Papa Bear’s version is low and heavy, played by Bass Trombone; Mama Bear’s version is an elegant cello in mid-register, and Baby Bear barely manages to squeak out the theme on a high Clarinet, sometimes punctuated by Glockenspiel. A wide variety of high-medium-low sequences are carried out in many ways throughout the story.

When pre-concert preparation allows, it may be helpful to illustrate this not only by playing the bears’ opening themes, but also by demonstrating the families of high/medium/low instruments onstage: the 3 strings – Violin/Cello/Bass, the 3 winds – Flute/Clarinet/Trombone, and possibly even the subtler groupings of 3 Cymbals and 3 Tom-toms.

CONTRASTING STYLeS: While the bears have a simple walking theme in 4/4 and leitmotives based on 1-5-1, Goldilocks is represented by a flute arabesque in 9/8, often accompanied by harp; her ornate and delicate theme is very distinct from the bears’ music.sa
