From the Campus Principal

Welcome to the latest edition of our newsletter.

Following on from our recent Council of International Schools (CIS) membership success, we will shortly begin our

journey towards full CIS accreditation. I introduced this to the most recent meeting of the TSPA held last Friday

morning. The process of CIS accreditation is neither simple or fast; as it can take up to 1.5 to 2 years to complete

successfully. It is recognized that the most important part of the process is the School’s “Self Study” (Part 1 and Part

2) which will involve all members of the School’s community participating in working committees. The Part 1

Committee will be responsible for the collection and analysis of data from internal surveys followed by the building of

a school profile.

In Part 2 the School conducts a searching review and self-study into its operations and conduct in the following

areas;

Philosophy and Objectives

Curriculum

Governance and Management

Staff

Student Support Services

Resources

Student and Community Life

Each of these areas will have an assigned self-study committee that will take responsibility for the collection,

analysis and commentary of evidence against a wide range of Standards and Indicators. Each of the Self-study

Committees will ideally be made up of members of the staff, student and parent bodies.

CIS is due to release the most recent edition of Accreditation Standards and Indicators in late-January 2016. Once

these are available we can begin the process of accreditation.

It will be an exciting time for our School which I think will bring great benefits as we critically evaluate what we do,

fully embed those things we are doing well, and continue to push for continual improvement. Our recent CIS

membership evaluation identified;

Some of the strengths identified in your application include:

• a clear school Mission, Vision and Core Values;

• exceptional rapport and respect between stakeholders on the campus; and

• clear policy and expectations outlined for students and staff.

A copy of the CIS Report is available to be read through the School portal.

I wish all members of our community all the best for a most enjoyable Hari Deepavali.

Best Regards,

Gregory C Mowday

Campus Principal

From The Head of STPS

Greetings. The examination block for all year levels was held this week. This is part and parcel of the school’s assessment and reporting process. I am pleased with the way the students applied themselves throughout the week. We are now moving to a less stressful but busy time of the school year. The next event will be the educational trip to Langkawi, 2 - 4 November 2015, for the students of Tahun 4, 5, and 6, Information briefing about the trip has been done for the students and parents. Students going on the trip have two assignments; to produce, a trip journal and a post card of the trip . We hope students will learn and enjoy the trip. Deepavali is just around the corner. I am happy to announce that the Principal of Tenby School has declared 9

From The Head of STSS

Dear Parents,

With the PT3 Examinations over, the school has put in place a Post PT3 Programme so that the form three students

can enhance their learning both in and out of the classroom. Students will be introduced to the form four curriculum.

They will hone their public speaking and debating skills in inter - form competitions.

Different activities have also been planned to take learning beyond the classroom. Students will go on field trips and

carry out community projects.

Singapore Trip

Form three students visited Singapore as one of the post PT3 programmes. They had a great time immersing

themselves in the history and culture of the country. Their itinerary included visits to museums, the Science Centre,

Sentosa Island, Universal Studios and needless to say they took in a spot of shopping.

Special thanks to Ms. Chang Yin Yin and Mr. Tan Beng Chuan for accompanying the students.

A word of thanks to Ms. Lim, the school counsellor for the Motivation and Destress workshop for SPM students. It

was extremely helpful and students appreciated the creative and beneficial activities.

Lastly, I would like to wish all parents, students and staff a Happy and Meaningful Deepavali !

Best regards,

Thum Lin Chee

The trip to Singapore was simply the best.

The experience of riding on the MRT and

the public buses using the same ticket was

cool. It was an educational trip because we

visited museums and learnt about the

history of the country but we learnt about

the culture by mingling and talking with the

Singaporeans on the street and at eating

places. That was priceless education.

We enjoyed riding rented bicycles along the Sentosa Island coast for some great

ocean view. The visit to the Science Centre was really out of this world, literally so as

we crawled into a gigantic man - made model of the human body and got to touch

and see how the human body parts work! We exited - naturally, through the anus!

Documentaries with special sound and visual effects made us feel that volcanoes

were really erupting before our eyes. We learnt of warning signs that are harbingers

of natural disasters like typhoons.

Apart from taking in the sights and savoring the culture and the food, we bonded and

will cherish the memories of an incredible trip.

Motivation and De-stress Workshop for Fifth Formers

At the point of writing, the SPM examinations would have started.

However, to get the students prepared and relaxed for the

exams, the counsellor, Ms. Lim, ran a workshop last week to help

put the students in the right frame of mind to face the exams.

They shared their thoughts about the SPM exams, inspired and

motivated the individual and the group to achieve success. There

were activities to guide and remind students to be clear about

their targets for success.

“You have to do what you have to do so you can do what you

want to do.”

Students are required to share their thoughts

about the SPM exam such as problems they face

or their preparation progress.

Students are required to write quotes or words that can

motivate their friends.

The penalty for doing it wrong!

When you get the

answer wrong

please, imitate my

action, correctly!

W ith 1% from each and every one of you, we can make a

difference. Since the term started, the 1 % club

members have invested enormous efforts into research

and raising awareness on orphanages, old folks and animal

sanctuaries that lack of support and need support; The members tried

their very hardest to help, not only internationally, but also locally.

Last Sunday, the 25th October, the 1% Charity Club members had a splendid

weekend in Kulim, ending the week meaningfully. Wanting to understand the

context and situation. Agape, a centre for children, youth and senior citizens is

in, our enthusiastic members went over the bridge with the ferry from Penang

and from the Butterworth ferry to Agape in Kulim. It was a long journey there,

as all the members met at the Penang ferry at 9a.m. sacrificing their weekdays

and sleep to go over the bridge; The journey there took around 1 hours and 30

minutes.

We met Mr Joseph, the head of Agape and also who runs a

church. He explained and shared his experience and touching

stories with us. This caused us to comprehend how lucky we are

having our family and parents paying for our upkeep and

expensive education, giving us a healthy body and educated

mind. It made us realise that the money we spend every day, or

even earn from any event could help someone to survive for a

month.

Agape is a small organisation with 10 old folks and 20 children.

They rent their homes and constantly have trouble paying for their

rent, electricity and water. Wanting to provide the children with a

better and healthier accommodation, Agape’s finance is further

stressed for renovation and improvement. Not only that, Agape also urgently needs a van to drive the children to

school as the previous van belongs to a church. Agape not only faced problem financially:

Mr Joseph shared with us an experience of a 40+ years old lady who had a serious accident which made her wholly

paralyze, causing her a trouble to eat normal food and only drink expensive milk that needed to be fed 2 hours once

from a tube connected through her nose into her intestines. Yet, with the help and effort of the workforce and Mr

Joseph, miracles happened; she became half-paralyze and slowly was able to move her legs and hands.

The most important thing we learnt from this visit was to appreciate what we have and how lucky we are. Besides

that, this visit also develops our independent skills to organise ourselves, teamwork, communication and problem

solving. After the visit, we decide to have lunch in BM, experiencing a different thing. Satisfied with the appetising

lunch and dessert, the members went back to Butterworth by bus and reached Penang by ferry.

We are looking forward to our next visit and our next upcoming event which is in progress to help Agape and get the

children and old folk involved in activities. For parents and students who would like to support Agape financially or

physically please contact Mr Joseph or myself, through phone or email. Please do not hesitate to contact me for

further details. Thank you

Lastly, as the president of this club, I would like to thank all the

members who have put their efforts into planning, organising and

being involved. They’ve worked through endless problems to

achieve their aim and constantly demonstrated a willing heart to

help.

A t the end of this term, we have our big showcase event of talent!

O ur website has had a few modifications over the past week to improve our communication and also to

help show more of our school to parents and potential parents. On the main page there is a green

announcement bar which will include any urgent, important messages to everyone. If you click on the green bar, this

takes you to another page to find out more. Thank you very much to the parents so far for the feedback on this as

we believe this central, first port of call when announcements are made is very important for our school.

Our social media buttons have been added to the website. The YouTube Channel (With likes, dislikes and

comments blocked) has been added and we have also included a link to our protected Twitter channel for parents to

opt to sign into. This includes a range of photos from this term that I personally update and has around 50 tweets so

far showing what we do in our school. Further updates to the website will occur over the year and I will keep you

updated on these.

Year 6 Poetry

Year 6 have written some very powerful poetry recently. They studied a range of poems and then identified strong

and effective vocabulary that paints a clear image in the reader’s mind. They then collaborated to draft and improve

their ideas. When creating their own poems they were able to use metaphors, similes and personification. They used

images from a recent carnival as the basis for their work. To see this powerful writing please visit the display on the
