Kororoit Creek Primary School has a zero tolerance for any form of child abuse 28 February 2020 Community Picnic What a great evening it was! Despite the weather it was wonderful to see so many of our families come along and show their support to the school. It was also great to see so many people involved in all the activities, from bubble soccer to musical performances, everyone got involved. The staff dunk tank was a huge success, I would like to extend a huge thank-you to the staff that put their hand up to be ‘dunked’ by our students. There were definitely some chattering teeth by the end of the night…..brrrrr! Between the bubble soccer, reptiles, face-painting and the Sunshine Band we hope there was something for everyone to enjoy. It was lovely to catch up with families that I haven’t had a chance to chat with since my return, as well as meeting some new faces. A special shout out to Beck Browning who organised the whole event, she did an outstanding job. Thank you again to all of our community for participating in our annual community picnic. 2020 School Council As you are aware I recently called for nominations for our 2020 school council. I can now announce that we received 3 nominations for our 2020 School Council which means we do not have to hold an election this year. Thank-you to George Lepa and Bronwyn Boyd for renominating and a big welcome to Danielle Verdoorn who will join our school council this year. I look forward to working with our school council to ensure another prosperous and successful year for Kororoit Creek Primary School. Coronavirus Update As you are all aware, the situation regarding the emerging outbreak of coronavirus has continued to evolve. I just wanted to reassure our community that I am receiving regular updates from the Department of Education and will be acting upon any advice given. Also just a reminder that if you are planning on taking your children out of school for a family holiday that you contact our Attendance Officer on the school phone number. School Review 2020 In Term 2 of this Year Kororoit Creek Primary School will be undertaking a school review. The Department of Education (DET) conducts reviews of schools every 4-5 years. This rigorous process is conducted by the Victorian Registration & Qualifications Authority (VRQA) and the evaluation is completed with support from a DET appointed external reviewer. The school review supports schools to differentiate their improvement journey by building on current strengths and assisting them to respond to challenges. The review process maintains that every school can improve. The school review:

welcomes school community participation embraces the input of experts from both within and beyond the school forges links between evidence, school review, and strategic and annual planning seeks multiple perspectives and engagement with the whole school community with the objective of school

improvement celebrates strengths and achievements

Following the review the school will receive a report that outlines key findings and recommended improvement strategies to maximise student outcomes. This then results in the development of the School Strategic Plan (SSP) which will outline our focused work over the next four years. I will continue to keep our community informed about the school review process in upcoming weeks. This is a very exciting time for Kororoit Creek Primary School, as we can begin to forge our future steps. Early Arrivals Over the past few weeks I have noticed a large increase in the number of parents dropping their children at school at a very early time each morning. It is my duty of care to remind you that children are not supervised in the yard until 8:45am and I cannot ensure the safety of our students when they are in the yard for up to 45 minutes before classrooms are opened. Please ensure you are dropping your children into the grounds at a reasonable time. Victorian Government Initiative: Free sanitary pads and tampons in all public schools As many of you will be aware last year the Victorian Government made an announcement that they would be providing free pads and tampons to all government primary, secondary and specialist schools. This is a great initiative and aims to:

Provide students with the confidence that there will always be sanitary items available at school

Relieve female students of the stigma, anxiety and discomfort associated with menstrual hygiene management so they can focus on their learning

Ease the cost of living for families. We have recently received our sanitary product dispensers and I have met with our senior female students to let them know where they are located across the school. Preps This week marks the first whereby our Prep children are officially ‘full- timers’. Our Prep teachers have now completed their Prep assessments and the information they have gathered about the literacy and numeracy understanding of our newest children, will form an integral part of their team planning and data discussions moving forward. Birthdays We are more than happy to help celebrate children’s birthdays at school as this is a special day for them. We ask that cupcakes only be provided rather than a traditional birthday cake which can be difficult to handle and share amongst a large number of children. Please ensure that there are enough cupcakes for each child in the grade and, of course, one for the teacher! As some children will not be able to participate for dietary, medical or personal reasons cupcakes must be given to the classroom teacher to distribute. PLEASE ENSURE ALL FOOD BROUGHT TO SCHOOL IS NUT FREE AS WE HAVE SEVERAL CHILDREN WITH SEVERE ALLERGIES TO NUTS AND NUT PRODUCTS.

School Photos School Photos will be held on Tuesday 24th & Wednesday 25th March. More information will be available at a later date. Please pop these dates in your diary. School Captains/Student Empowerment Group Sarah and Beck have been working closely with our School Captains this term as part of the ‘Student Empowerment Group’. They had a successful leadership day earlier in the year where they explored their roles as leaders in the school and where they can see themselves having the greatest impact across our school community. The group discussed the role and responsibilities that are part of captaincy but more importantly how we grow the leadership and agency of all children at KCPS. As a means of familiarising themselves to our community they have written an introductory spiel about themselves and their new role which you can read below. Have a great fortnight! Bethany Riseley

Class Captains 2020 After careful consideration KCPS has made some slight modifications to the selection and assignment of Class Captains. This year, we will be trialing semester Class Captains (Semester 1- Terms 1 and 2/Semester 2- Terms 3 and 4). The purpose of this change will allow the selected students to further develop as leaders over the semester. Semester Class Captains will have the opportunity to participate in weekly sessions with other leaders across the school through the Student Empowerment Group and will be provided with further opportunities to build their confidence and empower their peers. Similarly to last year, students will have the opportunity to share their voice through the selection of the Class Captains. The slight difference to this year’s process is that students interested in being considered will put their names forward. This is to ensure that students who are interested in the role are considered by their peers and teacher. Semester 1 Class Captains will be announced at the Week 6 Assemblies. Further information regarding this will follow. If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s homeroom teacher or me personally through the front office. Thank-you, Sarah Garcia

Green Team News

A big welcome back to 2020 from the Green Team!

Nude Food Day will be held EVERY Wednesday @ KCPS. Teachers and students will collect data on

the number of student participants and the classes with the most participation throughout the term will be recognised during end of term assemblies!

Did you know?

• Schools produce approximately 45kg of rubbish per student annually. • This means that at KCPS, we produce approximately 50,000kg of waste EVERY YEAR.

NUDE FOOD day is a chance for our students to realise what they can do for their health and the health of the planet. An event like this can give us all at KCPS a taste of the benefits, ease and fun

involved in packing a healthy, wrapper free lunch. For additional information, please visit our school website under the Sustainability Project tab

Things to look out for:

- Green Team Captains – these students will be chosen before the end of Term One and

presented with their captain badge during the final assembly of the term. Parents will be informed if their student is selected, and invited to attend the badge assembly.
