I was really excited when I was asked to test drive the 2013 Volkswagen Beetle.—I’ve always wanted to drive one. The Volkswa-gen Beetles are super cute cars! I felt like Barbie driving around central Arkansas (my daughter has a hot pink version for her dolls that is a favorite toy in our home).

The year was 1994. The car was a four door Mazda 6 with crank windows—a car no 16-year-old car lover wanted to drive. It got me from place to place and was a reliable vehicle, though at the time, reliablility was a feature at the top of my dream car’s list.

Flash forward to today. I had the opportunity to relive my teens by driving the 2014 Mazda 6, and what I discovered really surprised me!

I had my opinions already built up about this vehicle, but they all �ew out the window when I turned the key in this ride. Mazda has completely reinvented the Mazda 6. Not only is the body modern with a sporty look, but this sedan has some

great features inside as well.

The 2014 Mazda 6 has lots of room. I truly �t four adults comfortably with plenty of leg and head room. The seats come equipped with lumbar support, and the iDrive system, Navigation and touch screen functions will have any tech savvy driver smiling.

The gas mileage is great too, boasting 30 MPG, a true budget saver during the days of high gas prices.When I hit the open road in the 2014 Mazda 6 I was surprised once again. This little sedan has great control and drove like a sports car.

The all-new 2014 Mazda 6 is de�nitely worth taking for a test drive at North Point Mazda! This car is no comparison to the older Mazda 6 models!

For such a compact car I was happy to see that there is plenty of room in both the front and back seats. I sat down, buckled my seat-belt, pushed the start button and began exploring the features of the Beetle.

One thing that really stood out to me was the dash. Just like the old school Beetles had, the dash inside the new Beetles matches the exterior of the car. (The car I drove was bright red and having that color brought into the interior was really cool).

Volkswagens also have a great sound system. Fender, a company known in the music industry for making great amps and speakers, brought their sound systems to Volkswagen, and let me tell you, the sound quality was great!

There are many great safety features in the Beetle (and all Volkswagen models) including the backup cameras and the “Intelligent Crash Response System.” Of course, I didn’t put the ICRS to the test, but I did feel relieve knowing that if I were to be involved in an accident this feature will unlock the doors, turn o� power to the fuel pump and kick on the hazard lights. I was also surrounded by air bags.

When I pushed the convertible button, the top automatically retracted and I was cruising down the road, wind in my hair, turning heads as I passed other drivers. Who wouldn’t love that? The Beetle is de�antly worthy of a test drive over at North Point Volkswagen!

Brad here from 4x4 O�road Out�tters. I wanted to take some time and answer a question that I get a lot in the store: What upgrade should I do to my Jeep �rst? If you ever plan to take your Jeep o�road then the answer is easy, a winch! Sure you could start with a lift, fancy wheels and tires, or other accessories. But let me tell you, the �rst time you get stuck and you're not close to anyone or anything, you will be glad you started with a winch!

There are tons of winches out on the market today. They range in price and size, anything from small 4 wheeler winches to Warn 16,5000 pound winches. My rule of thumb is to get a winch that is one and a half times the weight of your vehicle and round up. For example, a new 4 door Jeep Wrangler tips the scale right around 4,350 pounds. So, with my math skills, 1.5 x 4350 = 6,525 but Since they don't make a 7,000 pound winch I would go for an 8,000 pound winch.

Of all the brands that are out there my personal favorite is Warn. Warn has had a great name in the world of winches for a long time. Recently they came out with an "entry level series" of winches called the VR series. These are very reasonably priced starting at $480 for an 8,000 pound with steel cable. This line of Warn still undergoes the same quality control that all of Warns' winches go through. They are also backed by Warns limited lifetime warranty. I am running a VR8000s on the front of my 2012 two door Jeep Wrangler Rubicon. The "s" stands for synthetic rope vs steel cable. The winch with synthetic rope is more expensive coming in at $725, but there are more pros than cons to synthetic rope in my opinion. I will cover that in another article.

For me, the Warn VR8000s was the best choice. For you, it might be the Smittybilt XRC8. The XRC8 is a lower priced winch at $300. Usually I would shy away from a winch with such a low price �guring that the quality wasn't there, but I have sold a ton of these winches and have had very little issues out of them. For the price, they are great winches.

Brad again here from 4x4 O�road Out�tters. Now that you have your Jeep a natural thing to want to do is lift it and put a larger than stock tire under it. The question is, which lift and tire combination is right for me? Starting with the 2007 year model Jeep, it is easier than ever to �t a larger tire under the fender. There are so many di�erent options when you start talking lift kits. Do I go with ProComp or Rough Country, maybe Daystar or SuperLift, and so on. What height? 1.75", 2.5", 4", 6"? Then you get into tires...Toyo, ProComp, Nitto, BFG, etc. And again what size? 33", 35", 37". When you come into my shop, I'll start o� by asking you a few questions...What do you want your Jeep to look like when it's done and what do you plan on using it for? For the everyday driver and weekend wheeler I would recommend either a 2.5" or 4" lift kit. A few of the most common kits that we install are Rough Country or ProComp 2.5" lift with a 33" tall tire, Rough Country or ProComp 4" lift with 35" tall tires. These are the most common kits we do for two main reasons, price and quality. I chose the Rough Country 2.5" lift with a 295/70/17 Toyo Open Country MT tire. A 295/70/17 is the metric equivalent to a 33" tire. This lift looks good on a Jeep and provides enough clearance for tire articulation while playing o�road. The Toyo Open Country MT is one of my favorite tires. It has great road mannerisms, handles well on wet pavement, it's not very loud on the road, and does very well o�road as well. Another tire that I really like, if you are looking for an all terrain, is the ProComp XTreme All Terrain. This is an aggressive looking all terrain that does very well like the Toyo. Bottom line, if you are thinking about lifting your Jeep and want to talk about what combo would work best for you, come see me at the shop. Trail RidesSuperlift ORV Park, April 6th, 9 AM

I want to cover something today that doesn’t have to do with products. I’m not going to tell you what you need for your Jeep to make you like it better. I get asked a common question by a lot of Jeep owners…Where is there around here to go ride? There are several responses to that question, but the one that I usually give is Superlift Offroad Vehicle Park in Hot Springs. Superlift is a privately owned park that is located about 3 miles behind Magic Springs on Mill Creek Road. They have all kinds of trails that vary in difficulty level. Each trail is marked with a sign that tells you the difficulty before you start. A one diamond is considered easy and a five diamond is considered hard. For a stock or mildly modified Jeep I would recommend sticking to the one or two diamond trails until you get a little experience behind the wheel offroad. If you haven’t taken your Jeep out on the trails yet, what are you waiting for? One of the great things about owning a Jeep is the offroad capability straight off the showroom floor! I see a lot of new Jeep owners come through my shop. As much as I would like to go every weekend and show people around the park I just don’t have the time. Instead what I have created is a customer ride each quarter. This ride is designed to get new Jeep owners more familiar with their Jeeps. We usually start the day off by going over a few of the basic things to do before you hit the trails and what to look for while out on the trail.
