Our student council has been elected from all classrooms in the senior and middle syndicates. There are two councillors from each class and will be meeting regularly with Mrs Armstrong. These children listen to ‘student voice’ from within their classroom and bring it to the meeting, helping solve problems and/or coming up with solution for various scenarios. They also organise different events throughout the year. Tomorrow they are organising face painting at morning tea time and children are welcome to dress-up in a Rainforest/Jungle colour or theme, such as animal, insect etc.

SIMILIES
Room 3 is learning about descriptive writing
using the ‘Rainforest’ as their prompt.
“Slowly twitching the awakening murderer opened its
dungeon awaiting its victim. As it set six traps, three
on the roof and three on the floor. Any greedy unaware
visitors could lead to an unwanted deathly ending.
The Venus Fly Trap set up transparent juicy nectar as
bait, any starving fly would fall for the trap. Suddenly the
trap snapped shut, closing in on the fly. The fly begged
the fly trap to let him out, knowing a brutal fatality was
creeping forward. Flies should know creeping into the
jaws of doom could lead to a never-ending nightmare.”

Although we promote the Key Competencies big time at Richmond School, we never lose sight of the importance
of fostering appropriate Attitudes and Values (as outlined in the NZ Curriculum, 2008).
One of the most satisfying things when you are a principal/teacher is to hear of heart-warming stories that
exemplify this. Both stories noted here relate to Year 6 boys (Kaelan and Dallas).
Firstly, one teacher received a phone call from a parent at another school who wanted to talk about a boy at our
school. The parent said her child’s scooter had been found by this boy and he noticed it had a name and
cellphone number under the deck. His mother and him phoned the person and arranged a pick-up of the scooter.
The parent of the child who had lost the scooter was so appreciative and highly impressed with the boy.
Secondly, whilst watching some of our Richmond School children play rugby for Waimea Old Boys at Jubilee Park
three Saturdays ago I was delighted with the sportsmanship displayed by a boy from our school. This boy was
playing in the opposition’s team (Stoke). Waimea Old Boys were winning convincingly and at one stage one of
the players scored an excellent try right in front of me. That was impressive but what was even more impressive
was our boy playing for Stoke (and he has for a number of years) said to the try scorer something like “Great try”.
Outstanding sportsmanship which is often difficult to show when your team is being well-beaten.
Congratulations to our competitive rippa team (coached by
Miss Drummond) who came third in the Waimea cluster’s
rippa tournament on Tuesday. They now qualify for the Nelson
regional tournament for the better rippa teams in the region.
Our ‘social’ rippa team (coached during the season by Mr Neal,
Mrs Brenton coached the team at the tournament) won the
social grade at the same tournament. Another outstanding
achievement.
