Direct and reported speech

Direct speech is directly from the person’s mouth; it is what they

said. Reported speech is where you are told what they said.

Have a go at the tasks below...

Direct or reported speech?

As the children sat down, Mr Cooper told them that it was time to read.

As the children sat down, Mr Cooper said,

“Right, Y5. It’s time to read independently for a while.”

Switch it! If it’s direct speech, change to reported and visa versa...

Whilst Dave was watching TV, his phone rang.

“Hello? Who is this?” Dave asked growing more and more concerned.

It was at that moment that the dragon began to stir. Fear rose up from Dave ’s stomach as he screamed for everyone to run.

Show me!

Write something you have said to someone in your house today as direct speech. Can you now write it again as reported speech?

London Design and Technology task

If we’d have gone to London, you would have seen buildings being constructed. Cranes and buildings

are always littering the horizon of London.

Take a look at my business meeting PPT to explore some of the strangest and most eye-catching

buildings around the world. They are a huge part of a city’s income and tourism.

Can you design - and if you have the materials - build a model of your very own design to add to Lon-

don’s skyline. Check out the video for more info...
