God and was told about the Institute of Pastoral Studies of Loyola University. I began to take courses in 2010, with the desire to increase the knowledge of my faith and explore new ways to serve others. I started out with the Religious Education degree program and soon found that I wanted to expand my learning. I was encouraged by my parish to also enroll in the Lay Ecclesial Ministry program sponsored by the Archdiocese. I received my Certificate of Studies in 2013 and continued at Loyola, expanding my course work to the Masters of Divinity program. As I took electives for this program, I thoroughly enjoyed the teachings of St. Ignatius and added in a Masters of Spirituality. I continue to serve as a Spiritual Director, and have been privileged to companion others in the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius. As I come to the end of my studies at Loyola, I am very grateful to be able to use my learning in service, being part of such a welcoming faith filled community. The Latin “AD MAJOREM DEI GLORIAM” (for the greater glory of God) is the motto of the Society of Jesus as well as of Loyola University Chicago. St. Ignatius, like our Patron, St. Benedict, listened to the voice of God calling him to service. We are all called to consciously and intentionally follow Jesus, always asking ourselves what it really means to be a “disciple.” I look forward to meeting all of you and serving with you as a fellow disciple and follower of Jesus. Communion Antiphon - How Great is the Goodness, Lord

Networker that’s willing to work to make a difference. God doesn’t ask us to understand how or why He does things. He just asks that we trust in His decisions. I believe that a bunch of negative events (the bully, finding finances for college, changing degree paths) in the end was God saying “listen to me, I need you here.” Well, I’m here now - God has done his part - I am ready to do mine, which is listening to what the school’s needs are, and then fulfilling them. I am prepared to have a blessed and educational school year with all of you; so let us do the very thing God asks of us, teach the kids how to follow Him! I believe that technology is not an evil divider between humans and God; but instead, a tool that can be used to unify the world, and everyone in it. I guess that’s why I got into networking, the thought that humans have reached a technological level where followers of Christ no longer have to travel the world to spread the news. Now we can all disseminate the word of God via the Global Network. We need to teach the kids, how to use the computer as a virtue, and not a vice. If there is anything I walk away with at the end, after spending the future at St. Bens, is that I can tell God I inspired at least one child to think the same way. - Louie Karagiannes, Head IT Technician

As a catholic school, we work to inspire people to follow in the way of Christ. We teach that the most important attributes to attain are faith, hope and Love. Love being the most important of all. With that said, I never thought I would attend a catholic school, considering

I’m an Orthodox Christian. As it turned out, though, I was destined to attend Carmel Catholic High School in Mundelein, precipitated by incidents I experienced from a bully in my public grammar school. After I graduated high school, I desired to attend a liberal arts university to become a History teacher. However, because of financial reasons, I was, once again, destined to change my educational choices, the first of which was to attend DeVry University. At DeVry I became interested in joining their Networking Degree path/program, in part of a three year Bachelors program. Although I enjoyed what I was learning, I sometimes thought, I might only end up as an IT help desk kid, for some major industrial company that would not even care to know my name. However, the smartest guy I know, told me about a place that needed help, a place where God was definitely present, and a place that needs a

Notre Dame Vision ExperienceJason Mieling, Senior, St. Benedict High SchoolThe experience of Notre Dame Vision has changed my view on my religion. I think the experience that most profoundly changed my view was being in community with so many other high school students that were confident in their faith. The conversations that we had in small groups led me to know how people practiced their faith even in the midst of doubt. I became more prayerful and practiced prayer more often, especially evening prayer. My favorite speaker was Stephanie Cloutre Davis. Her talk hit close to home because I have been labeled a lot since I was a kid. Her talk really made me aware I am not alone in being labeled and that I do not have to accept those labels. I can be who I choose to be. Since my experience at Vision I am more confident to be a Catholic because I have seen that other teenagers my age are confident as well. I can, and will encourage others to go on the Notre Dame Vision trip because it was just a complete joy to be there.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word Gospel Thoughts Today’s Gospel reading can be difficult for adults much less children to understand. This passage from St. Luke seems to be 180° from the image we usually hear about Jesus. Discuss with your child(ren) how Jesus’ actions are due to the condition of the world he was living in. The world Jesus lived in had many problems which are not compatible with the life Jesus wants for us here on earth. Just as parents must make hard decisions for the protection of their loved ones they make them because above all else they love their family and want what’s best for them. Deacon Dave

Please consider being part of this rewarding ministry. It is a true blessing working with children in our RE program. Liturgical Writing Ministry Needs Your HelpAre you looking for a way to prayerfully be a part of our liturgies here at St. Benedict? If so, we need you.During every liturgy here at St. Benedict, our community offers up Prayers of the Faithful after the homily is given. These Prayers offered at our liturgies are written by members of the St. Benedict parish community who are part of a ministry called the Liturgical Writing Ministry.

Each ministry volunteer who writes the Prayers prayerfully considers the needs of our community, our church and our world in light of the scripture readings. The Prayers are one way in which the liturgy reflects the community spirit here at St. Benedict.

If you would like to participate in this ministry, you are invited. There is no experience or special knowledge required. The only requirements are a desire to pray with our community and a commitment to write the Prayers once every 4-6 weeks throughout the year.

For questions, or to participate, please call Cathy Norris at 773-805-5220.

Spiritual Life

Retrouvaille…A Lifeline for Marriages The word Retrouvaille(re-tro-vi with a long i.) is a French word meaning rediscovery. This program helps couples heal and renew their marriages and offers tools needed to rediscover a loving marriage relationship. The Retrouvaille Program consists of a weekend experience combined with a series of 6 post-weekend sessions. Registration is open for the last two retreats of 2016: September 9-11th at the Carmelite Spiritual Center in Darien/JolietDecember 2-4th at the Lincolnshire Marriot

Contact: Robin & Phil Kain, (773) 544-0498, [email protected].

Spiritual Dream Group In this group we learn to become like a container of sacred space as a group to provide a secure connection between the individual’s inner world and the outer world. Spiritual dream work affirms that our (nocturnal) dreams offer us support in our spiritual journey. This work helps us towards living a guided life from within with the support of others and helps us to recognize the symbolic language of the soul. All dreamers are welcome and there is no experience necessary. I encourage anyone who has been interested in their dreams, but has not had the opportunity to share and explore them further to attend. This ongoing group will meet on the first and third Mondays of each month at 7 pm until 9 pm in the basement of the rectory in the small meeting room.

Session Dates: 9/19, 10/3. 10/17, 11/7, 11/21, 12/5, 12/19, 1/9/17, 1/23/17, 2/6, 2/20, 3/6, 3/20, 4/3, 4/17, 5/1, 5/15, 6/5, 6/19

Women’s Faith Sharing Resumes this SeptemberThe Women’s Faith Sharing Group has taken a short break and will begin again on September 14 at 7:00pm in the rectory. We had a great first year. We spent about an hour each month discussing our faith and we are ready to welcome any women who would like to join us in our faith journey.
