The Miraculous Medal and Saint Catherine Labouré XII. Sister Catherine Labouré’s Final Year on Earth

Since the early 1840s, Sister Catherine spoke about the need to make a statue of the Virgin Mary holding a globe. She wanted the statue, which corresponded to the November 27, 1830 vision, to be placed in the Rue du Bac chapel above a side altar on the right where the Virgin had appeared on that November afternoon. Father Aladel believed that the Virgin holding the globe was not in accord with the Miraculous Medal image of rays of light coming from the outstretched hands of the Blessed Mother. How could Mary be simultane-ously holding a globe? Yet, Catherine had seen the apparition develop as the Virgin Mary held a globe, then

stood on the globe with her arms outstretched and rays coming from her hands. The globe signified the Virgin Mary as “Queen of the Universe,” a Marian title dear to Catherine’s heart. Only after her death was the statue made and placed in the chapel. In 1880, the motherhouse chapel was finally opened for pilgrims to visit. * Catherine’s final year on Earth was 1876. She grew weaker physically and had to relinquish the various duties that she had been accustomed to do. Catherine made a retreat in early November at the motherhouse. On the Feast of the Im-maculate Conception, December 8, she made her last journey to the chapel where the apparitions had occurred. Later that month, Catherine received the Sacrament of Penance and the Sacrament of Extreme Unction or the Anointing of the Sick. She passed from this earthly life on the evening of Sunday, December 31, 1876. The secret of her visions of the Blessed Mother was revealed publicly to the community. Catherine’s funeral and burial in Reuilly were on January 3, 1877. Her body is incorrupt and now interred in the chapel of the apparitions, visible for all to see and venerate. Pope Pius XI beatified Sister Catherine on May 28, 1933 and Pope Pius XII canonized her on July 27, 1947. Pope Saint John Paul II visited the chapel of the apparitions on Rue du Bac on May 31, 1980. Sister Catherine’s heroic piety was a spirituality of the poor. She embodied the virtues emphasized by Saint Vincent de Paul and vibrantly synthesized prayer and activity. Catherine had great devotion to the Blessed Mother. The 1848 vision of a monumental crucifix in front of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris testifies to Catherine’s acceptance of the mystery of suffering. Catherine had seen Saint Vincent, Our Lord Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and her own guardian angel. They welcomed her into eternal life and happiness. Her life, prayers, and work continue now that she is in Heaven. I would like to conclude this series of articles with two quotes from the Blessed Virgin’s colloquy with Sister Catherine and corresponding recommendations for us today. During the nocturnal conversation on July 18/19, 1830, the Blessed Mother pointed to the foot of the altar and said to Catherine, “But come to the foot of this altar. There, graces will be poured out on all those, small or great, who ask for them with confidence and fervor. Graces will be poured out especially [on those] who ask him for them.” Here in Our Lady of Fatima Church, do not hesitate to come into the sanctuary before or after Mass to pray at the foot of the altar as the Blessed Mother recommended. Enter through the gateway in the Communion rail. Walk up two sets of stairs and then approach the three stairs in front of the altar. The bottom stair is the favored place where graces are given. In the apparition of the Medal, Catherine had noticed “rings on [the Virgin’s] fingers, rings with precious stones. Some were more beautiful than others, some larger and some smaller, which gave out rays of light some more beautiful than others. These rays came out […] always spreading out [like a fan] so as to fill all the lower part. I could no longer see her feet. … The precious stones which give out no rays of light are the graces that people forget to ask me for.” Jesus said, “Ask and it will be given to you.” (Matthew 5:7.) Be bold in prayer! Come to the foot of the altar and ask!

Saint Catherine Labouré, pray for us!

O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee!

Next week, we will begin a new series of articles on Our Lady of La Salette and the two seers, Melanie and Maximin, portrayed in our Church

on the window neighboring the Miraculous Medal window. * René Laurentin, Catherine Labouré: Visionary of the Miraculous Medal, Paul Inwood, trans. (Boston: Pauline Books and Media, 2006).

I have drawn extensively from Father Laurentin’s book in preparing this article. Unless otherwise indicated, quotes are from Lau-rentin’s book.

In the reading from the letter of St. James we are urged to be “doers” of the Gospel, not just listen-ers. Being a “steward” of God’s Word is a matter of listening to the Good News, embracing the Good News and putting the Good News into ac-tion in our day-to-day lives. And whenever we are

uncertain as to what decisions to make or actions to take as good stewards of the Gospel, St. James reminds us: We can never go wrong if we resist popular values that are not compatible with the Gospel, and we come to the aid of those who are burdened, distressed and poor.

Financial Information for the weekend of August 21/22 was not available at time of printing. Stewardship to-tals for August 21/22 and August 28/29 will be reported in next weeks bulletin. Remember that it is in giving that we receive. Please remember to continue to support your parish during the hot summer months. Utility bills are especially high during this time and attendance at weekend Mass de-clines due to families being out of town for vacation. Thank you for your generous sup-port of our parish.

HOUSE SYSTEM: It is with an immense amount of joy and excitement that Fatima announces the commence-ment of Fatima’s House System! This system will pro-mote a positive climate and culture for students and staff. Using RCA’s

methods, plus a few Doctors of the Church, this program will help the school confidently implement processes that build character, relationships, and school spirit. Fatima teachers, staff and administrators chose their prospective house based on certain characteristics they possess. Then, the students spun a wheel and went down a slide, and were placed into a House for the remainder of their time at Fatima. Over the years, students will meet as a group, earn points for good character and service, bond as a house, and learn more about their prospective Doctor of the Church. The House System will invigorate the culture in an invalua-ble way!

prayer for hurricane season

O God, Master of this passing world, hear the humble voices of your children. The Sea of Galilee obeyed your order & returned to its former quietude. You are still the Master of land & sea. We live in the shadow of danger over which we have no control: the Gulf, like a provoked & angry gi-ant, can awake from its seeming lethargy, overstep its conventional boundaries, invade our land & spread chaos & disaster. During this hurricane season we turn to you, O loving Father. Spare us from past tragedies whose memories are still so vivid and whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with the passing of time. O Virgin, Star of the Sea, Our Be-loved Mother, we ask you to plead with your Son on our behalf, so that spared from the calamities common to this area and animat-ed with a true spirit of gratitude, we will walk in the foot-steps of your divine Son to reach heavenly Jerusalem where a stormless entity awaits us.

MONDAY, AUGUST 30 - Blessed Alfredo Ildefonso Schuster

Educated at Saint-Paul-Outside-the-Walls abbey, Rome, Italy from age 11. En-tered the Cassinese Benedictine monastic novitiate in 1896, taking the name Ildefonso. Made his formal monastic confession on November 13, 1900. Or-dained on March 19, 1904 in Rome. Novice master of his house from 1908 to 1916. Procurator general of the Con-gregation of Monte Cassino from 1914 to 1929. Abbot-ordinary of abbey nul-lius of Saint-Paul-Outside-the-Walls on April 6, 1918. President of the Pontifi-cal Oriental Institute from October 7, 1919 to July 4, 1922, and teacher at sever-al colleges and institutes. Consultor to the Sacred Congregation of Rites in the sections for the Liturgy and for the Causes of Saints. Censor of the Acade-my of Sacred Liturgy. President of the Commission for Sacred Art Apostolic Visitor to seminaries of Lombardy and Calabria. Appointed Archbishop of Mi-lan on June 26, 1929 by Pope Pius XI. Created cardinal on July 15, 1929. Papal legate to several events and congresses in Europe. Participated in the con-clave of 1939. Founded the Institute of Ambrosian Chant and Sacred Music and the Ambrosianeum and Didascaleion cultural centers, and wrote for the daily publication L’Italia. There was some controversy during the investigation of his Cause as some claimed he was sympathetic to Fascism. Evidence, however, shows that he denounced Fascism’s meddling with the youth organization Catholic Action, refused to participate in ceremonies involving Mussolini, and condemned racist legislation. The cardinal was primarily concerned with the spiritual well-being of his flock, the physical needs of the poor, assistance to newly married couples in order to create strong marriages, and with the administration of the Archdiocese.

TUESDAY, AUGUST 31 - Saint Aidan of Lindesfarne Monk at Iona, Scotland. Studied under Saint Senan at Inish Cathay. Bishop of Clogher, Ireland. Resigned the see to become a monk at Iona c.630. Evan-gelizing bishop in Northumbria, England at the behest of his friend the king, Saint Oswald of Northumbria. Once when pagans attacked Oswald’s forces at Bambrough, they piled wood around the city walls to burn it; Saint Aidan prayed for help, and a change in wind blew the smoke and flames over the pagan army. Aidan was known for his knowledge of the Bible, his eloquent preaching, his personal holiness, simple life, scholarship, and charity. Miracle worker. Trained Saint Boswell. Founded the Lindesfarne monastery that became not only a religious standard bearer, but a great storehouse of European lit-erature and learning during the dark ages. Saint Bede is lavish in his praise of the episcopal rule of Aidan.

the church on cardinal virtues Taken from Our Sunday Visitor’s

Encyclopedia of Catholic Doctrine

There is a clear difference between a student who reaches the right answer in geome-try only falteringly and with much difficulty after a great deal of time and another student skilled in ge-ometry who reaches the conclusion surely, with ease and pleasure. Both have the ability to reach the true conclusion, but the second student has something in him that the first does not. This student has a stable disposition inclining him to reason with ease, pleasure, and sureness in the area of geometry. Similarly, there is a difference between someone who makes the right choice, but falteringly and with difficulty, on the one hand, and a person who chooses well because he has a disposition to choose well, that is, in line with love of God and neighbor, will not only make the right choices more frequent-ly, but he or she is more attentive to the real goods at stake, more alive to the problems and opportuni-ties, in his or her situations. That disposition to choose well is moral virtue. A human being is complex. A human being is com-posed of body and soul, and has various capacities or powers: He or she has cognitive powers (capacities to know) and appetitive powers (capacity to desire or will). Thus, the human being has sense powers and intellect, and bodily appetites (capacities to have emotions, for example, to feel inclined toward or repelled by an object, and the will (the power to will or choose). Although choosing is itself an act of the will, we choose what we have judged to be good in some way (an intellectual act); we choose things we have some bodily desires or feelings about (emotions); and we carry out our choice with or by our other powers. Because of this complexity, the different aspects of us, our different powers, can be disposed to act to-gether well or badly. For example, our sense appe-tites or capacities to have emotions may have a dis-position to go their own way, independently of our judgment of what is truly good. Or one’s will may be disposed love oneself to the exclusion of the rights of other people. Such dispositions are vices; whereas the dispositions in our various powers to act well are the moral virtues.

united in faith - visionaries for Fatima’s future

Over the course of the next year, the Pastoral Visioning Process involves five key phas-es - all designed to engage pa-rishioners in creating a new and visionary parish model. In June and July, we complet-ed Phase One as the Parish Vitality Assessment Report was presented by Bernard Dumond of Catholic Vitality 360 to parish leaders on July 21st.

Currently, we are now in Phase Two, having established our process leadership team, the Steering Committee, and in the process of invit-ing parishioners to take part in a Listening Session. The Listening Ses-sions will take place the week of September 13th.

Session 1: Monday, Sept. 13th - 12:00 Noon - Church/Knight Hall Session 2: Monday, Sept. 13th - 6:10 p.m. - School/Chance Hall Session 3: Tuesday, Sept. 14th - 1:30 p.m. - Church/Knight Hall Session 4: Tuesday, Sept. 14th - 5:30 p.m. - School/Chance Hall

Session 5: Wednesday, Sept. 15th - 7:00 a.m. - Church/Knight Hall Session 6: Wednesday, Sept. 15th - 8:10 a.m. - Church/Knight Hall

As a part of Phase Two of our Parish planning, the Steering Committee would like to invite parishioners to take part in a Listening Session. It is not required that you enroll in a Listening session ahead of time but if you know the session you would like to attend, please call the Parish Office, to let them know. Walk-ins are most welcome! Social Distancing will be provided for attendees and masks are recommended for all who attend.

THE CHURCH - SEXUALITY Project Rachel

A post abortion healing and recon-ciliation program for those suffer-ing the negative effects of an abor-tion experience. Individual sessions are offered where one can receive the healing grace of God through a 9-10 step healing program. Take the first step and call 337.261.5598.

Rachel’s Vineyard Retreat A Rachel’s Vineyard Weekend Re-treat is an opportunity for any man, woman, couple, grandparent, sib-ling, or anyone who struggles with the emotional or spiritual pain of abortion. Retreats begins at 6:00 p.m. on Friday and concludes at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday. For more in-formation please call 337.261.5598.

Project Joseph (for men suffering after an abortion)

In honor of the year of St. Joseph, the Office of Pro-Life Apostolate has begun planning the Diocese of Lafa-yette’s first Project Joseph Retreat exclusively for men. This ministry offers men the opportunity to heal after an abortion. Studies have shown that women are not the only ones who suffer from the detri-mental effects of abortion. Men are deeply affected as well, although many remain in denial and want to bury the feelings. Some may have initially felt relief after their partner’s abortion but now experience regret and remorse. If you or someone you know would like to attend a Project Joseph Retreat, please call 337.261.5598. We are happy to speak with you and prepare you for up-coming retreats.
