Transcript of 225-10, Voltage Regulators
GENERALMcGraw-Edison® VR-32 single-phasestep voltage regulators are tap-changingautotransformers. They regulate distribution line voltages from 10%raise (boost) to 10% lower (buck) inthirty-two steps of approximately 5/8%each. Voltage ratings are availablefrom 2400 volts (60 kV BIL) to 34,500volts (200 kV BIL) for 60 Hz and 50 Hzsystems.
Internal potential winding taps and anexternal ratio correction transformerare provided on all ratings so that eachregulator may be applied to more thanone system voltage.
Smaller kVA sizes are supplied withsupport lugs for pole mounting andwith substation or platform tie downprovisions. Larger sizes are providedwith substation bases with pad-mounting provisions.
Voltage is maintained within desiredlimits by controls that feature superioraccuracy, reliability, and serviceability.Continuity of service is assured byrugged, service-proven tap changersand core-and-coil assemblies functioning with the control.
McGraw-Edison voltage regulatorsare available with a full complementof standard features for routine appli-cations, as well as a full line of option-al accessories for unique applications. In addition, the regulatoroffers desirable features that enhanceoperation and service.
STANDARD FEATURESA sealed-tank construction allows theuse of 65°C rise insulation system in55°C rise rated designs to provide anadditional 12% capacity above thenameplate rating without loss of normal insulation life. Additional load capacity is stated on the nameplate, this ADD-AMP™ feature is availableas long as the tap changer’s maxi-mum current rating is not exceeded.
The unit construction cover suspendsthe internal assembly consisting ofthe core-and-coil assembly, tapchanger, and the reactor for ease ofinspection and maintenance.
All McGraw-Edison regulators aremanufactured and tested to the ANSIStandard C57.15.

ARRESTERSSeries Surge ArrestersAll VR-32 Voltage Regulators areequipped with a bypass arrester con-nected across the series windingbetween the source (S) and load (L)bushings. This bypass arrester limitsthe voltage developed across theseries winding during lightning strikes, switching surges and line faults. AMOV type series surge arrester of 3kV offers series winding protection onall regulators except those rated33000 V, which have a 6 kV MOV-type series surge arrester.
Shunt ArrestersA shunt arrester is an optional acces-sory on the VR-32 Voltage Regulatorfor protection of the shunt winding. The shunt arrester is a direct connect-ed arrester mounted on the tank andis connected between the load bush-ing and ground. For additional protec-tion, a shunt arrester may also beinstalled between the source bushingand ground. Shunt arrester applica-tion data is listed in Table 1.

CONSTRUCTIONCore and Coil AssemblyEase of service is provided by thedesign of the core-and-coil, tapchanger, and reactor assembly. Theentire assembly is cover suspended for ease of removal from the tank forinspection or maintenance.
The coil assembly features an aluminum strip in the series windingthat achieves the optimum in ampereturn balance for exceptional strengthunder through-fault conditions.
Grain-oriented steel is used in thecore, with a low reluctance butt joint. The rugged core clamp assemblysecures the coil effectively and posi-tions the core for the optimum in quietoperation and low core loss.
With sealed-tank construction, theexternal oxygen supply is eliminatedfrom the tank environment. With theuse of a 65°C rise insulation systemand designs with a nameplate ratingof 55°C, an additional 12 percentcapacity is available from theMcGraw-Edison 32-step regulatorwithout any loss of insulation life.
Tap ChangersSpring-drive tap changers are typical-ly used in regulators rated below 15kV, 219 A and below; and units rated19.92 kV, 100.4 A and below. Aspring-drive tap changer is shown inFigure 4. In the larger sizes, the tapchange is accomplished by a direct-drive mechanism. A direct-drive tapchanger is shown in Figure 5. Smoothtap changes and long contact life areassured through careful design ofspeed controlling components.

Position Indicator andADD-AMP CapabilityThe position indicator is mounted ona junction box on the cover of the regulator, and is directly connected tothe tap changer by a flexible drive shaftpassing through the junction box andterminal board via a sealing gland.
The indicator face is graduated insteps, numbered 1 through 16 oneach side of zero. Zero designatesneutral. Drag hands indicate the max-imum and minimum positions attainedduring raise and lower operations. The drag hands are reset around theposition indicator hand by operatingthe drag hand reset switch on thecontrol front panel.
The ADD-AMP feature of VR-32 regulators allows increased currentcapacity by reducing the regulationrange. This is accomplished by settinglimit switches in the position indicatorto prevent the tap changer from traveling beyond a set position, ineither raise or lower directions. Thelimit switches have scales graduatedin percent regulation, and areadjustable to specific values of 5, 6-1/4,7-1/2, 8-3/4, and 10% regulation toalter the regulation range. The fivepossible load current ratings associatedwith the reduced regulation rangesare summarized in Tables 4 and 5. Ateach setting, a detent stop providespositive adjustment. Settings otherthan those with stops are not recom-mended. The raise and lower limitsneed not be the same value unlessreverse power is possible.
