FORT BENNING, MANEUVER CENTER OF EXCELLENCE Fort Benning has served as the Home of the Infantry since 1918, transforming into the Maneuver Center of Excellence in 2005. Since World War I, its mission has been to “produce the world’s finest combat infantrymen.”

this monument was originally intended to honor U.S. prisoners of World War II. It was later moved to its current location and altered to also reflect the POWs and MIAs of World War I, Korea, and Vietnam.

• International WHINSEC - Currently training officers of foreign countries, this building originally served as the U.S. Army Infantry School and Fort Benning Headquarters.

• Doughboy Stadium - Built by U.S. Army Infantrymen as a memorial to their lost comrades of World War I.

• Historic Cuartels - Designed and constructed in the 1920s, this building serves as offices and quarters for visiting officers. The building appeared in the 1941 edition of Ripley’s Believe It or Not for the world’s longest continuous porch.

BEAUTIFUL REGIONAL SCENERY Sometimes the ride is as important as the destination. Whether you tour by motorcycle or travel by car, west central Georgia is the place to go just to explore. Enjoy the curvy roads and spectacular scenery of GA 190 as you wind through FDR State Park, Pine Mountain, and Callaway Gardens. Stop for a picnic at Dowdell’s Knob, where FDR grilled out and enjoyed the view. Venture to Red Oak Creek Covered Bridge, Georgia’s oldest and longest covered bridge, just off GA 74/85 near Woodbury. Explore the shopping enclave of Warm Springs, Georgia, and visit FDR’s Little White House while you’re there. Along the region’s backroads are delightful town squares, treasured vintage architecture, antiques shops, local restaurants, intriguing museums, and miles of rural scenery that varies from mountain forests to valley fields. There are plenty of opportunities to stop for a photo op, or just sit back and enjoy the ride.
