January 2008

Dear Colleagues:

Welcome to Denver and the 8th Annual CASE WinterLeadership Conference. This school year’s focus on 21stcentury leadership has given rise to our conference themeMinding the Gap.

Our opening keynote will feature information about the impact of physicalactivity on our ability to learn. Dr. John Ratey has conducted brain researchthat highlights the strong connection between mind and body.

Significant learning gaps continue to exist in our schools. In Friday’s closingkeynote, Dr. Ron Ferguson, from Harvard’s Tripod Project, will share theresults of his work with 25 school districts where he has found effectivestrategies for closing the achievement gap between racial and ethnic groups.

This year’s program also features two strands that are specially designed for secondary and elementary school leaders. Middle level and high schoolprincipals have an opportunity to learn more about an assessment systemthat many districts are finding helpful to better prepare students for collegeand workforce success. Elementary leaders will learn about the nextgeneration of schools and the role of the principal through work that hasbeen done by the National Association of Elementary School Principals in its Vision 2021 project.

As traditional, the Friday morning agenda will feature information anddiscussion about significant education policy issues in Colorado. We arehonored this year to welcome Governor Bill Ritter and Commissioner DwightJones who will address our conference.

We aim to provide knowledge that will strengthen your skills as leaders andto inspire you to continue the important work you do on behalf of children.Thank you for coming and enjoy the conference.

This knowledge is basedon research and work with elementary, middle level, and high school students in 25school districts in Harvard University’s Tripod Project.

Ron Ferguson is an economist and Senior Research Associate at Harvard’s Weiner Centerfor Social Policy and has taught at Harvard since 1983. Much of his research since themid-1990s has focused on racial achievement gaps, appearing in many publications.
