In 2001, the Parks and Recreation Department received a KCCI Project Mainstreet Grant and with the money created a butterfly garden along with other improvements. The park includes a garden in the shape of a butterfly, a walking trail, a white picket fence, a wooden arbor, a swing, and a couple of picnic tables. This park makes a great retreat for a small family picnic or a great little get away. There are no restrooms at this park, but enjoy a leisure walk over to the library for facilities.

City of Norwalk Parks and Recreation Receives Grant FromWarren County Philanthropic Partnership

Norwalk Parks and Rec has received a $5,000 grant from Warren County Philanthropic Partnership. Grant funds will help to achieve the purchase of a rider field painting machine to be jointly shared with the Norwalk Community School District. “Both entities have numerous soccer, football, and practice fields to be painted. With the number of youth participating in these sports, this should help reduce the manpower and labor for painting these fields throughout the year,” said Nancy Kuehl, Norwalk Parks and Rec Director. The Warren County Partnership was organized to promote and enhance community based philanthropy in Warren county. The WCPP recently received a state award to facilitate endowment building and grantmaking.

The contribution to the foundation was made possible by the Iowa General Assembly. In 2004 the Iowa legislature passed several bills to encourage foundation building and community based philanthropy. Among these measures was H>F> 2032 which provide that non-gambling counties, initiating a county-side community foundation would be eligible to receive one half of one percent of the state’s gross gambling tax receipts. Twenty-one grant applications were received and 9 organizations across Warren County from Norwalk, Milo, Indianola, New Virginia, and Carlisle, shared in the funding allocations.

From parades to sports and everything in between, The Record-Herald& Indianola Tribune photographers have Warren County covered.
