21 st Century Community Learning Centers Fall 2017 Newsletter Why Out-of-School Time Matters! In today’s economy more and more parents are working outside the home in order to insure their living needs continue to be met. Therefore, the need for student out- of-school time has increased in the last couple of years. Thus today’s youth are spending more time alone and unsupervised. In response to this crisis, educational entities, non- profits, state agencies and school districts have collaborated to offer out-of-school options for students. This provides an opportunity for academically focused activities through various forms of enrichment programs. The STEM Outreach Center is dedicated to providing support to regional school districts through quality out-of-school time programs, teacher professional development, and programs aimed at parents and families – all in an effort to highlight the importance of education. In addition to this, we provide quality programming that meets the needs of students, schools and Southwestern NM communities through hands-on, enrichment activities in STEM. The STEM Outreach Center challenges students with a rigorous curriculum that meets national math, science, literacy, and technology standards in out-of-school time programs, summer camps, and family nights. We also encourage parents/guardians and families to participate in workshops tailored to specific needs, for example, family nutrition, money management, and Explora! de-Escuela Importa! En la economía actual, cada vez

hay más padres trabajando fuera del

hogar para asegurar que sus

necesidades de vida estén cubiertas.

Por lo tanto, la necesidad de cuidado

para niños fuera-de-escuela ha

incrementado en estos últimos años.

Así que la juventud de hoy pasan más

tiempo solos y sin ser supervisados. En

respuesta a esta crisis, entidades

educativas, organizaciones sin fines de

lucro, agencias estatales y distritos

escolares han colaborado para ofrecer

opciones fuera de la escuela para los

estudiantes. Proporcionando una

diversas formas de programas de

El STEM Outreach Center está

dedicado a brindar apoyo a los distritos

programas fuera-de-escuela de calidad,

desarrollo profesional del maestro, y

programas dirigidos a padres y

familias—todo en un esfuerzo por

resaltar la importancia de la educación.

STEM Outreach Programs SEMAA – Science, Engineering, Mathematics, and Aerospace Academy provides engaging

STEM enrichment to students through hands-on, inquiry-based scientific and mathematical topics. Activities are thematic and real-world oriented to give students the opportunity to explore creativity, solve problems and engage their analytical thinking to understand the world we live in. This program is available to K-8th graders.

School Selected Electives provides students with additional programs to explore music, dance, theater, sports, robotics, gardening, and many more topics that address the whole child’s development.

Science Brain Battle is an invitational to prepare students for the Science Olympiad.

Readers Theater serves as the basis for STEM by encouraging kindergarten – 3rd grade students to cultivate a love of learning through literacy skills, reading fluency, performance, and art.

Parent and Family Workshops are sponsored events that encourage the entire family to spend time together and learn about topics ranging in healthy lifestyle choices, money management, and social media education.

DiMA – Digital Media Academy inspires students to cultivate 21st century skills through projects utilizing digital media, educational technology, and their imaginations. This program is for 4th – 8th graders.

COUNT – Creating Opportunities Using Numerical Thinking provides students with life skills, confidence, and an interest in mathematics. This program helps students “find the math” in everyday experiences, with the goal of making it less intimidating and creating awareness about the importance of math skills. This program is available to 4th-8th graders.

Receive free breakfasts and lunches

Have never participated in an out-of-school time program prior to this academic year

STEM Outreach Programs SEMAA – Ciencias, Ingeniería, Matemáticas y Academia Aeroespacial proporciona un enriquecimiento en

STEM atractiva para los estudiantes a través de actividades prácticas, y temas científicos y matemáticos basados en la investigación. Las actividades so temáticas y están orientadas al mundo real para brindarles a los estudiantes la oportunidad de explorar la creatividad, resolver problemas e involucrar su pensamiento analítico para comprender el mundo en que vivimos. Este programa está disponible para los estudiantes de kínder – 8vo grado.

Electivas Escogidos por las Escuelas proporciona estudiantes con programas adicionales para explorar música, baile, teatro, deportes, robótica, jardinería y muchos otros temas que abordan el desarrollo del niño entero.

DiMA – Academia de Medios Digitales inspira a los estudiantes a cultivar habilidades del siglo 21 a través de proyectos utilizando medios digitales, tecnología educativa y su imaginación. Este programa es para estudiantes de 4to – 8vo grado.

COUNT – Creando Oportunidades Usando El Pensamiento Numeral proporciona a los estudiantes con habilidades para la vida, confianza e interés en las matemáticas. Este programa ayuda que los estudiantes “encuentren la matemática” en las experiencias cotidianas, con el objetivo en hacerlo menos intimidante y crear conciencia sobre la importancia de las habilidades matemáticas. Este programa está disponible para estudiantes de 4to – 8vo grado.

Spring 2018 Upcoming Events Enrollment: Applications are currently being accepted for students participating in the

21st CCLC programs and those that are brand new to the program.

Family Nutrition Series: this series will be held for parents and provides information

on how you can create a healthy lifestyle for your family.

CPR Training: parents will be invited to become CPR certified through the

partnership with 21st Century Community Learning Centers and the STEM Outreach

Center. Space is limited.

Exercise and Fitness: Zumba classes will be provided where parents will learn how

to achieve healthy fitness levels, how to properly stretch prior to exercise, how to

dance!

Chaparral School Superstar!

This semester, our school superstar is Ms. Claudia Saldana! Ms. Saldana is the person of contact

at Chaparral Elementary, and she also teaches COUNT as an out-of-school time instructor. Ms.

Saldana teaches students during the day, instructs COUNT and coordinates/communicates with

the site coordinator weekly and she does her homework and attends school in the evening to

attain her Master’s degree! Whew! What a hardworking educator! Ms. Claudia Saldana

deserves a shout out and thank you for all of your hard work!

Proximos eventos en la Primavera 2018 Incripción: Actualmente se aceptan aplicaciones para los estudiantes participando

en los programas del 21st CCLC y de aquellos que son nuevos al programa.

Serie de Nutrición Familiar: Esta serie se llevará a cabo para los padres y brindara

información sobre cómo usted pueda crear un estilo de vida saludable para su familia.

Entrenamiento de RCP: Los padres serán invitados a obtener una certificación en

RCP a través de la asociación con el 21st Century Community Learning Centers y el

STEM Outreach Center. El cupo es limitado.

Ejercicio y Aptitud: Clases de Zumba serán proporcionados en las que los padres

aprenderán cómo lograr niveles de aptitude física saludables, cómo estirarse

adecuadamente antes de hacer ejercicio, ¡y cómo bailar!

Program Highlights!

Lights On After School! Chaparral Elementary out of school time programs participated in the Lights On After School Event! Families and students came together to celebrate keeping out of school time programs in schools across the country! Chaparral had over 100 participants who colored light bulbs, crafted tea light holding crafts and decorated galaxy jars in order to shine as much light in the room that evening and on the positive role that out of school time programming plays in their community!

Family Reading Night! Chaparral Elementary out of school time programs participated in Family Reading Night! Students were encouraged to rotate through the literacy-focused booth events and watch the out-of-school Folklorico program perform classic cultural dances for the school attendees. The STEM Outreach Center hosted a booth focused on literacy and identifying rhyming words! It was a great turn out with a lot of family fun!

Family Awards Ceremony! Chaparral Elementary out of school time programs host a family awards ceremony each semester at the completion of programs to showcase the works and skills they have gained from their out-of-school time programming! Performances are given in Readers Theater and Electives such as Baile Folklorico. Works and projects from SEMAA, DiMA and COUNT are placed on display around classrooms and multi-purpose rooms to showcase the parents the amount of work students put in each semester to learn new concepts and master important skills they can use in their everyday lives!

COUNT- Ms. Hernandez Ms. Hernandez taught COUNT this semester. Students explored how art and mathematics are connected and found the mathematics in the work of famous artists. Students worked with geometric shapes, paint and heat guns just to name a few of the components of the many activities they completed this semester!

SEMAA Kinder”gardeners”- Mr. Soto Mr. Soto taught SEMAA Kindergarten this semester and worked with the students to build a program garden with them. They planted seasonal vegetables and watched them sprout as they studied how plants grow and what they need to survive!

Readers Theater- Ms. Martinez Ms. Martinez hosted second and third graders

this semester in Readers Theater. The program

presented a play at the end of the semester for

all out-of-school time families and created some

amazing props and activities during the

semester, including dinosaur masks from their

dinosaur unit!
