Miners everywhere face similar challenges. Running a safe operation is your highest priority. Nothing matters more. Meeting production and profitability targets is also critical. The pressure is always on to deliver more tons at a lower cost. Environmental responsibility is another key concern. We are all challenged to do the right thing, meeting demand for minerals and metals in a manner that sustains the earth. Caterpillar and your Cat® Dealer understand your priorities. We welcome the opportunity to put our products, services and technologies to work in your operation. Together we can achieve all your business objectives—Mining safely. Mining more. Mining right.

11th AusIMM UndergroundOperators’ Conference 2011
ForewordOperators’ conferences are a forum for people and companies who have links to mining operations to share their experiences – bothsuccessful and not so successful. It is for this reason that the Underground Operators’ Conference series is of particular importance asit promotes the sharing of core knowledge for mine operators. Importantly, this knowledge is documented and can assist in definingthe contribution that mining operations are making to the improvement of operating practice.
‘Safe, Innovative and Sustainable’ was chosen as the title for the 11th AusIMM Underground Operators’ Conference 2011, to stimulatediscussion of these aspects of mining. The first two themes in this title – safe and innovative – are not new and have featured in pastconferences. The sustainability component reflects the evolution of strategic goals for businesses including mining practices in theearly part of this century. What does sustainability mean for current and future underground mining practices and will it become part ofthe DNA of Australian mining in the same way as safety and innovation? By considering what sustainability means for mining, there isscope to understand how curiously, openness to change and a willingness to ‘have a go’ have enabled some of our mining operationsto rank amongst the best in the world in terms of commonly applied metrics for mining operations.
The location of this conference in Canberra is significant because of its connection with the Lachlan Fold Belt. This geologicalsubdivision has hosted the majority of mining operations in Victoria and New South Wales, dating back to the earliest years ofunderground mining in Australia. Today this region hosts some of Australia’s newest and largest underground mines and there aremore to come.
I want to thank the many people who have contributed to this event; members of the organising committee, reviewers, authors andpresenters. I also acknowledge support of The AusIMM’s very professional Events and Publications Departments.
Once again we are indebted to our many sponsors and exhibitors for their support for this event, many of whom have long associationwith the Underground Operators’ Conference series.
Lastly, I thank all the delegates for attending and on behalf of the Organising Committee, I welcome you all to the 11th AusIMMUnderground Operators’ Conference, and we hope that you are able to take something of value from the conference.
Sincerely,
Adrian PrattConference Chair, 11th AusIMM Underground Operators’ Conference 2011

The Cadia Valley MinesThe AusIMM is proud to announce that it will be officially launching the
latest Spectrum Series publication at this event – The Cadia Valley Mines,
written by E J Malone. The launch will take place in Session 2 by AusIMM
President, Alice Clark. The Cadia Valley Mines is a comprehensive account
of the exploration, development, construction and operation of the
various mines and projects operated by Newcrest in the Cadia
Valley near Orange in New South Wales. This book has been
written to provide an objective but informed record of the
entire process, since exploration first identified the major
Cadia Hill copper and gold orebody in 1992 through to the
present day. The Cadia Valley Mines will be available for sale
in book and CD formats from The AusIMM stand along with a
range of other AusIMM publications, merchandise and membership
information. We encourage delegates to drop by the stand to be among
the first to purchase a copy of our latest release!

Scope: The Conference aims to focus on identifying the challenges that face the
minerals industry in the future and some of the possible pathways that might offer a
solution. As well the Conference is intended to address current and prospective
innovations in mining; some lessons and opportunities that could be transferred from
other industries to implement new scientific and technological developments into the
mining industry, society engagement of mining industry, directions and strategies of
mining education and research. The Conference will provide a forum for communication
among current and future industry leaders as well as industry partners including
scientists, mine management, engineers, government representatives, mining academics
and other stakeholders. The Conference also aims to identify some possible scenarios
of “Mining in the Future” and provide a picture of the global mining industry in 2025
