In view of the growing need of the Indian Economy, Government of India has embarked upon a massive programme to provide 24x7 power across the country by 2019. After the completion of half of its term, the Government has achieved many important milestones in the Power sector. Special focus has also been given to North East by giving approval to the North Eastern power system improvement project and comprehensive scheme for strengthening of transmission and distribution in the North Eastern States.
During the 12th Plan period (2012-17), a capacity addition of about 88928.2 MW against the target of 88537 st
MW from conventional sources have been achieved till 31 October, 2016 and about 21,128 MW against the thtarget of 30000 MW from renewable sources have been achieved till 30 September, 2016.
Due to large generation capacity addition, the electricity energy shortage in the country has reduced to 0.7% during the current year 2016-17 (up to October, 2016) from 8.7% during the year 2012-13.Adequate supply of the domestic coal to power plants has been ensured. The growth of domestic coal supply to power plants has been around 6.2% during 2015-16.
thDuring the 12 Plan period (2012-17), 1,00,468 ckm against the target of 1,07,440 ckm of transmission lines
st and 2,88,458 MVA against the target of 2,82,750 MVA of transformation capacity have been completed till 31October, 2016.
The government has launched a scheme by providing support from Power System Development Fund (PSDF) for operationalization of stranded gas based generation. The outlay for the support from PSDF has been fixed at 3500 crores and 4000 crores for FY 2015-16 and FY 2016-17 respectively.
Under the ‘24x7 Power for All’ initiative, State specific Plans for 34 out of 36 States/UTs, have already been prepared and are under implementation.

World’s first ‘solar panel road’ opens in France at Tourouvre-au-Perche in Normandy. The 1 KM road could
generate enough electricity to power the street lights. The panels have been covered in a silicon-based resin
that allows them to withstand the weight of passing big rigs. As per Colas France could become energy
independent by paving only a quarter of its million KMs of roads. Solar panels have become increasingly
popular in recent years as cost of operating them has come down significantly, making it cost competitive with
traditional energy sources.

In 1843, the first Christmas card was commissioned and printed in London by civil servant and entrepreneur Sir Henry Cole, who sought to make a profit from the trend. The run of 1,000 cards, which featured scenes of charity, were sold for a shilling each. It was not a cheap purchase, a shilling would be worth about £10 to £20 today ($12 to $24), but one that has appreciated in value: of the 12 surviving cards from the original print run, one was sold on auction in 2001 for £22,500 ($28,000).
Shortly after, in 1910, Joyce Clyde Hall, a young postcard seller, from Kansas City who became America’s greeting card giant, Hallmark, a company with a revenue of $3.7 billion.
Initially, greetings were sent as postcards with the pre-written message and illustration on the front and the address on the back. Customers began adding some personal writing, and by 1915 folded cards sent in envelopes started becoming more popular. “Having an envelope allowed you to have more space to write, and add in a photograph or a small cash gift, so [the card] could be more than a form of communication.
The story of how greeting cards became a staple of year-end celebrations began in Victorian England. At the time, Christmas was celebrated by feasting and exchanging gifts.
thCards evolved from two practices that were common in the first half of the 19 century: visiting cards, which aristocrats gave as hosts during a visit, and reports sent home by students, typically around the end of the year, to update their families on their studies.
The combination of these traditions gave birth to Christmas cards, which were personal (early cards were handmade), relatively inexpensive, and less time consuming than writing a letter.
Yet the exchange of Christmas cards didn’t take off until the 1840s, when Queen Victoria published an engraving showing celebrations of Christmas at Windsor. This prompted her subjects to follow her example and send out their own Christmas wishes.
