    Welcome

A NOTE FROM THE A RTISTIC DIRECTOR —

It is such a pleasure to present JIFF on the big screen after the tumult of 2020. Our decision

to postpone JIFF was motivated by our commitment to an in-cinema festival; we invite you to

immerse yourselves in the positive shared experience that generates the unique JIFF alchemy.

This year’s program reaches out to all ages across the full psychedelic spectrum of politics

    and religiosity. The line-up includes the Australian premieres of fifty films and three series;

as usual split equally between Israeli and diaspora productions, with nineteen countries

    represented on screen.

We open with the exhilarating drama Incitement, winner of the best film award at the 2019 Ophir Awards (Israeli Oscars). The critically-acclaimed feature is directed by Yaron

Zilberman, creator of the new HBO series Valley of Tears.

Big international festival films include Here We Are, direct from Official Selection at Cannes Film Festival, and the new Holocaust-era film Persian Lessons, which premiered at the 2020 Berlinale.

There are rousing films about the Jewish changemakers Menachem Begin, George Soros

    and Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Asia, starring Shira Haas, is the winner of this year’s Ophir Award for best film, and is therefore Israel’s submission to the Best International Feature Film category at the upcoming

Academy Awards. It kicks off our very own mini ‘Shira fest’, which includes Esau and our super Closing Night screening of the first two episodes of Shtisel season 3.

We present unique cinema binge-watch opportunities for the TV series Unchained and Nisman, and invite you immerse yourself in heavy-hitting docs ‘Til Kingdom Come, The Human Factor and Love, It Was Not.

For cinephiles, there is plenty of joy to be had with Churchill and the Movie Mogul, Alan Pakula: Going For Truth and The Last Stage, a newly restored 1948 Holocaust-era gem.

Harvey Keitel, Anjelica Huston, Jean Reno and Guy Pearce bring Hollywood star power to

our line-up, alongside celebrated and edgy American indie films Minyan and Shiva Baby.

    Thank you all for your support in making JIFF the biggest Jewish festival internationally;

see you all at the movies.

    —Eddie, Lindy and Erin

“A compelling look at the dawn of the nuclear age.” — The Hollywood Reporter

Based on Stanislaw Ulam’s autobiography, Adventures of a Mathematician offers a fascinating

glimpse into one of the greatest scientific minds of the 20th century.

Stanislaw (Philippe Tlokinski), a Polish Jewish mathematician, is offered an opportunity to

work on a top-secret project in New Mexico. Along with a French woman (Esther Garrel, Call

Me By Your Name) who he marries after a whirlwind romance, Stan moves to Los Alamos and

becomes part of a team of brilliant young immigrant scientists whose work led to the creation

    of the hydrogen bomb.

When retired 68 year-old Meir discovers that

his 30 years of planning the annual village

a sense of meaning and vitality, Meir begins

to rebel against the inevitable: the betrayal of

his physical body, the growing distance from

his children, and the loss of relevance.

Pakula, a lauded filmmaker and extremely

    France, 1940. Defying logic, Janot

    Reichenbach, a wealthy Jewish woman,

decides to not flee the German-occupied

country with her husband and son. Instead,

Prime Minister Léon Blum, with whom she

“Shira Haas is devastating…a patient and inquisitive character study with an emotional wallop.” — Indiewire

Asia (Alena Yiv) and Vika (Shira Haas) are more like sisters than mother and daughter.

Young mom Asia hides nothing about her work-hard, play-hard lifestyle, and expects the

same openness and honesty from teenage Vika. But Vika is at an age where privacy and

independence are paramount, and inevitably begins to rebel against her mom’s parenting style.

With two stubborn and opinionated women under one roof, Asia finds herself in new

territory and stumbles to achieve a balance between asserting her parental authority and

respecting her daughter’s point of view. When health issues lead Vika to be confined to a

wheelchair and her need for romantic experiences and sexual exploration becomes more

urgent, Asia realizes she must get out of the way so that her daughter can live her life.

A dark romantic comedy following the life of Ronen Matalon. Born and raised in Jerusalem,

Ronen begins to conduct tours of infamous terror attack sites along Jaffa Street, while also

taking care of his elderly and dependent father. During one of his tours he meets Asia Mulan,

“An award-winning love letter to the food of the Middle East.” — The Jewish Chronicle

This delicious documentary follows a group of chefs who take part in a unique food festival

in the Israeli city of Haifa. The feel-good – and extremely appetising – message of the film is

clear: Arabs and Jews should unite over their shared love of food rather than fighting. Featuring

freshly chopped Israeli/Arab salad, exquisite mussakhan (Palestinian roast chicken) and

kreplach (Jewish dumplings) made to perfection, Breaking Bread is a mouth-watering film about hope, collaboration and exotic fare.

“A deeply moving first-hand account.” — The Hollywood Reporter

The compelling story of two Jewish teenage

sisters struggling to survive the Holocaust

in Nazi occupied Poland. They are both

talented: Ariana Elizabeth Bellak, a child

prodigy referred to as the ‘Polish Shirley

Temple’, performs on stage in Warsaw

shortly before the war. She sings, plays piano

and appears in feature film by famous Polish

directors. She is nine years old when the war

starts. Renia is more introverted, romantic

and sensitive. She is a gifted poet who keeps

a diary spanning the years 1939 to 1942.

Ariana, who currently lives in New York,

narrates her story on screen. Her narration

intertwines with text from Renia’s diary.

Churchill and the Movie MogulBroken Dreams

“A fascinating account of how Churchill changed cinema.” — The Telegraph

    Winston Churchill understood the power

of films, but the true extent of his use

of cinema as a propaganda tool is rarely

explored. In 1934, a Hungarian Jewish

émigré and England’s first and only movie

    mogul, Alexander Korda, signed Churchill

up as a screenwriter and historical advisor.

It was the start of a unique collaboration as

Churchill provided script notes for Korda’s

productions and penned an epic screenplay.

When war broke out, their partnership

took on national importance. These two

    establishment outsiders shared a common

    view of cinema’s propagandistic potential,

which they skillfully exploited to turn the

    tide of history.

“A seamless blend of humour, pathos and heart.” — Toronto Jewish Film Festival

Husband and wife Victor and Raya Frenkel were the golden voices of the Soviet film dubbing

for decades: all the Western movies that reached Soviet screens were dubbed by them. In

1990, with the collapse of Soviet Union, the Frenkels decided to make Aliyah and immigrate

to Israel along with hundreds of thousands of Soviet Jews. However, in Israel, during the Iraqi

Scud missile attacks, there is no need for Russian speaking dubbing artists. Victor’s and Raya’s

attempts to use their talent will cause bizarre and unexpected events during their first months

in their new home, and turn the beginning of this chapter of their life into an amusing, painful,

    and absurd experience.

“A poignant and moving story of a father’s love for his son.” — Critical Movie Critics

Graced by two fantastic lead performances, Here We Are is a film about the triumphs, the sadness, and the quiet moments of tenderness that make up so much of our lives. Aharon, a

stubborn and proud divorcée, and Uri, his autistic son, have lived a harmonious life together for

years, but time is catching up with them. Uri is now an adult, and his mother is pushing for him

to enter an institution and shift to more independent living. But the two men are reluctant to

separate, and together embark on a life-changing road trip.

A kind and compassionate drama, Here We Are touches on the strengths of family ties, the rights of the differently abled, and the challenges of ageing, and won the Best Director,

Best Screenplay, Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor Awards at the 2020 Ophir Awards

    (Israeli Oscars).

Directed by award-winning director Nir Bergman (Broken Wings), the film premiered in Official Selection at the 2020 Cannes Film Festival.

“Exposes the intricate relationship between diplomacy, politics and religion and the heavy price of neutrality.” — UK Jewish Film Festival

As World War II looms on the horizon, Pope Pius XI calls on a humble American priest to help

him challenge the evils of Nazism and anti-semitism. But death intervenes, and a new pope,

Pius XII, carries out a very different response to Hitler and the Holocaust.

Holy Silence tells the dramatic story of the Vatican’s actions – and inactions – during World War II and the years leading up to it. Featuring Oscar-nominated actor David Strathairn as the

voice of President Franklin Roosevelt, the film focuses on the little known story of Americans –

from priests to presidents – who worked behind the scenes in hopes of persuading the Holy See

to be a strong moral voice against Hitler and fascism.

“This powerful film cogently indicts the dark, repressive voices in any society who can set the stage for violence.” — The Hollywood Reporter

The assassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin in November 1995 was a watershed

moment for Israel. Incitement is a mesmerising and electrifying account of assassin Yigal

Amir’s radicalisation process over a two-year period leading up to the murder, against the

backdrop of violent protests, terror attacks and Amir’s growing sense of personal frustration

and isolation. Combining archive footage of Rabin and the then opposition leader, Benjamin

Netanyahu, with superb performances, Incitement tells a story of a personal and national

tragedy that killed not just a leader but also the dream for peace between Israelis and

    Palestinians.

This gripping and memorable drama was Israel’s submission for the 2020 Academy Award

Shot on location in Auschwitz in 1948,

The Last Stage is a landmark and influential post-Holocaust film. JIFF presents the

Australian premiere of the digital restoration.

    The female prisoners at Auschwitz-

    Birkenau concentration camp come from

    many countries. Wanda Jakubowska drew

    from numerous individual testimonies for

her realistic depiction of everyday life there,

a balancing act between forced labour and

the infirmary, between death threats and

the will to live. The cruelty of the guards

and the SS mass murders are on full display.

But amid the constant pall of smoke from

the crematoria chimneys, there are also acts

of opposition and solidarity as the women

prepare for their liberation by Russia’s

    Red Army.

“A superbly documented, creatively executed tale about a taboo romance.” — Variety

Love is blind. In March 1942, Helena Citrónová was among the first thousand Jewish women

who were transported from Czechoslovakia to Auschwitz. The dogs are barking and the

guards are laughing as the beautiful Helena is undressed and shaved. The humiliations of the

concentration camp only get worse as the weeks go by, until the SS officer Franz Wunsch hears

her sing and falls head over heels in love with the young woman, who in turn falls for her captor.

Love, It Was Not is the true story of an unlikely affair which managed to sprout amidst the horrors of war. Through photo collages, diary entries and interviews with the survivors, the

whole process is reproduced, from the arrival in Auschwitz to thirty years later, when Helena

is summoned as a witness in the trial against Franz. Can she allow herself to denounce the

flame of her youth, who saved her from certain death in the gas chambers – or should she let

a war criminal go free? A both tragic and moving reminder of guilt, forgiveness and, not least,

    fatal love.

A surprising and unfamiliar portrait of Israel’s sixth prime minister. After his 1977 election,

Menachem Begin led Israel for six dramatic years, a time that produced social and political

changes that are still felt deeply today. During Begin’s time in office, he faced significant

challenges and made a handful of fateful decisions that led to both creating peace and launching

a war. In addition, he was the first prime minister to appoint Mizrahi Jews to important

political positions. The film merges never-before-seen archival footage with contemporary

interviews with key figures from Begin’s time as prime minister.

The Mystery of the Black Book

    (TAALUMAT HASEFER HASHAHOR)

    Minyan

In October 1947, the ‘Black Book’, a

collection of testimonies and articles about

the murder of over two million Jews under

Nazi occupation in the Soviet Union, was to

be published in Moscow. But the book was

shelved by the authorities, as if the Holocaust

of Soviet Jews had never occurred at all.

    Deftly mixing animation, archival footage

and contemporary interviews, The Mystery of the Black Book considers the history of Soviet Jewry, and the impact of Stalin’s decision to

hide documented evidence of the Holocaust

    in the Soviet Union.

1942. Gilles, a young Belgian man, is arrested by the SS alongside other Jews and sent to a

concentration camp in Germany. He narrowly avoids execution by swearing to the guards

that he is not Jewish, but Persian. This lie temporarily saves him, but then Gilles is assigned a

seemingly untenable mission: to teach Farsi to Koch, the officer in charge of the camp’s kitchen,

who dreams of opening a restaurant in Iran once the war is over. Gilles finds himself having to

invent a language he doesn’t know, word by word. As the unusual relationship between the two

men begins to incite suspicion, Gilles becomes acutely aware that one false move could expose

“An undeniably ambitious piece of work.” — Reel Film Reviews

Award-winning filmmaker Karen Yedaya’s Red Fields is a poetic, at times surreal, but ultimately sensitive adaptation of the legendary anti-war Israeli rock opera Mami. Written by Hillel Mittelpunkt, Mami became a cult play in the 1980’s. Mami, beautifully played here by Neta Elkayam, is a young Sephardi woman who works as a gas station cashier in a poor Israeli

development town in the southern periphery, and dreams of a better future with her beloved

husband Nissim upon his return from the front. Everything changes when Nissim is brought

home paralyzed. Mami decides to rewrite her destiny by leaving for the big city, Tel Aviv. With

sixteen songs recorded live on screen by Dudu Tassa and Nir Maimon, this cinematic musical

breaks ground in format, storytelling, and creativity.

How does a person rise to the U.S. Supreme Court despite closed doors and legal and social

and Yossale. Ruchami is learning to adjust to married life and the challenges of becoming a

mother, while Yossale’s has reached the age where he needs to consider getting married, using

the gregarious matchmaker, Menucha (Hana Laslo) though he seems to prefer to focus on

his studies. Yet when he meets Shira Tzibulnick (Reef Neeman), a beautiful, incredibly smart

young woman, his life is no longer the same.

Co-creators Ori Elo and Yehonatan Indursky have crafted a series that provides unique

insight into the world of an Ultra-orthodox Jewish family in Jerusalem, lovingly and gently

drawing the heroes with humour and emotion which has resonated with viewers worldwide.

“A spirited, tragicomic drama.” — Screendaily

The Sign Painter is a tragicomedy about a young Latvian man with simple dreams:

to marry the free-spirited and beautiful

daughter of a local Jewish merchant and to

pursue a career as an artist whilst supporting

himself as a sign painter. But his dreams are

repeatedly swept away in the tumultuous

tides of serial totalitarian occupation of his

    home during the WWII era.

Billionaire activist George Soros is one

of the most influential and controversial

figures of our time. Famous for betting

against the Bank of England in 1992 and

making a billion dollars in one day, he is

maligned by ideologues on both the left and

the right for daring to tackle the world’s

problems and putting his money behind his

fight –from free elections and freedom of

the press to civil rights for minorities. With

unprecedented access to the man and his

follows Soros across the globe and pulls back

“The dichotomy between the public and private man is fascinating” — Original Cin

Dr. Miami – a.k.a. Michael Salzhauer – is the most famous surgeon in America. Millions of

loyal followers from around the world tune in daily as he live streams graphic plastic surgery

procedures on social media - all with the enthusiastic consent of his self-proclaimed ‘beauty

warrior’ patients. Celebrated for his outrageous personality in hip hop culture and criticised by

the professional surgery establishment, in his private life Salzhauer is a devoted family man and

Orthodox Jew who observes the Sabbath. Through Dr. Miami’s ‘reality’ operating theater, we

enter the hotbed of body modification and merciless selfie culture where BBL’s (Brazilian Butt

Lifts) have increased over 250 percent since 2015. Meanwhile Salzhauer’s patient waiting list

grows to over two years long, putting stress on his domestic cocoon. When a string of surgery-

related deaths rocks the Miami community and his teenage daughter’s conflicted feelings

about his handiwork surface, the plastic surgeon perfectionist must confront his elevation of

this alarming social trend and reconcile Dr. Miami with Michael Salzhaeur.

“A fascinating tale of human contradictions.” — Movies That Make You Think

A Jewish surgeon and the daughter of a neo-Nazi form an unlikely alliance in this gripping

Italian drama. Simone, the son of a Holocaust survivor, rushes to the site of a hit-and-run

accident, but leaves the victim to die when he discovers a swastika tattooed on his chest.

Feeling remorse, Simone hires Marcia, the man’s daughter, as a house cleaner against the

wishes of her neo-Nazi brother, Marcello. When Marcia brings a gravely wounded Marcello

to his doorstep, Simone is once again confronted with an ethical dilemma.

Superbly acted, Thou Shalt Not Hate is a powerful reflection of the legacy of Nazi ideology in contemporary Italy.

“A well-researched, sharply organised exposition of a strange and disturbing set of alliances.” — Screendaily

Millions of American Evangelicals are praying for the State of Israel. Among them are

the Binghams, a dynasty of Kentucky pastors, and their Evangelical congregants in an

impoverished coal mining town. They donate sacrificially to Israel’s foremost philanthropic

organisation, the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews, because they fervently

believe the Jews are crucial to Jesus’s return. This film traces this unusual relationship, from

rural Kentucky to the halls of government in Washington, through the moving of the American

Embassy to Jerusalem and the annexation plan of the West-Bank. With unparalleled access,

the film exposes a stunning backstory of the Trump and Netanyahu administrations, where

financial, political and messianic motivations intersect with the apocalyptic worldview that is

insistently reshaping American foreign policy toward Israel and the Middle-East.

“ Absorbing, often simultaneously shocking and fascinating… this Israeli mini-series will keep you chained to the screen.” — Jewish Renaissance

Rabbi Yosef Morad’s job is to free married women from their reluctant husbands by persuading

the latter to give them a gett (a Jewish divorce document). His work is not unlike that of a detective: he follows, gathers evidence, draws conclusions. But will his investigative skills assist

him in solving the mystery of his own faltering marriage, and his wife’s secret double life?

JIFF screens all twelve episodes – presented in four separatey ticketed parts – of this

suspenseful Israeli TV show that explores the lives of Orthodox Judaism’s agunot, the ‘chained women’ who are refused divorces from their husbands.

“A beautifully and sensitively told story.” — Behind the Lens

The year is 1943 and although Europe may be ravaged by the horrors of World War II, Jo’s

(Noah Schnapp) life in the picturesque French Pyrenees has remained remarkably untouched.

That is, until Jo stumbles upon a dangerous secret: Jewish children are being smuggled out of

Nazi-occupied France to the safety of Spain by the village outcast, widow Horcada (Anjelica

Huston) and her son-in-law, Benjamin. When German troops move into town, Jo finds himself

caught in a perilous conspiracy and enlists the help of his grand-père (Jean Reno), a veteran of

The Great War. Responsible for the escape of a group of Jewish children, his own life on the

line, Jo must grow up fast if they are going to survive. Set against the stunning backdrop of the

French Pyrenees and perils of foreign occupation, this tale of a young boy’s triumph against the

odds will set your heart racing and reignite your faith in the human spirit.

“ Following Jojo Rabbit, here’s a less zany child’s view of Nazi Germany. A nuanced story of resilience touchingly brought to life.” — The Times

It’s 1933, and nine-year-old Anna’s carefree childhood is disrupted when her parents decide

to flee Germany. In their search for safety and livelihood, the close-knit family moves first to

Switzerland, then Paris and finally, London – each move presents great challenges, but even

greater rewards. Though she still harbours hopes of returning to Berlin, Anna gradually learns

that home is wherever she is free to love, imagine and dream.

Directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Caroline Link and based on the beloved best-selling

novel by Judith Kerr, When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit offers a moving perspective on the experience of German Jews who fled the country before the war, while superbly capturing

    the magic of childhood.
