“Some Magi from the East arrived in Bethlehem searching for the newborn king. When they saw the child with his mother Mary, they prostrated themselves and did him homage. They brought out their gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh, and presented them to him.” Mt 2:11 Early Christians considered the gifts of the Magi to be symbolic. Gold is the "king of metals" and is symbolic of Jesus' kingship. Frankincense is used in worship and is symbolic of Jesus the High Priest. Jesus is the one and only Priest. I am an ordained priest that Jesus established to baptize, marry, bury, offer the forgiveness of sins, offer Mass, and to be a visible sign of his priesthood. Myrrh is used in burials and is symbolic of Jesus' humanity and ultimately His suffering and death on the cross. The Epiphany commemorates the “manifestation” of God through Christ to the world by the three Magi (Mt 2:1-12). The image of the three wise men from the East kneeling before Jesus, offering their gifts, has been an inspiring symbol of worship. It offers the structure for prayers of adoration and song… ‘We three kings of orient are .’ The story has fascinated people because it links Jesus to the wider world of the orient and to the mysteries of the heavens. It reminds us that we too must bring our gifts to Christ and kneel before Him and worship Him. Not all are willing to prostrate themselves and give Jesus homage. The word we use for “prostrate” is genuflection. We are reminded that we must prostrate and worship Jesus and offer Him our gifts. Jesus came as a baby 2000 years ago and He promises to come at every Mass in the Holy Eucharist. Some do not attend Mass. Some say I can worship Jesus in my own way. But God teaches us we must worship in the assembly-not just on our own. We must come to Him as the three Magi did. Did you know that from the beginning that God demands we worship? It’s the first thing he asked the Israelites to do. That’s why the Church has always taught that missing Mass (even once) is a mortal sin. It’s the most basic thing God asks of us. Many don’t and that worries me and it should worry them. Some are even trying to do away with God. Let’s face it there are many reasons to miss Mass, but one gigantic reason not to – It’s what God demands of us. We can’t get to heaven on our own. Do you know someone who has stopped coming to Mass? Invite them back. Please see me if you have any questions or want some more clarification or help. I want to thank you for the many cards and gifts. I don’t think I will have to buy gas or pay at the “men’s mall” for many months. Your kindness and generosity is most ap-preciated. Have a great and blessed week. Fr. Jim Trempe
