By late summer, following appropriate health guidelines, we began offering in person, pre-registered, public programming for all ages. Nature Preschool adjusted to be entirely outdoors, mitigating concerns over shared indoor learning space. Onsite school programs were not able to occur, but staff continued to meet with Bullock Creek and Coleman classes to help achieve their curriculum goals.

Now more than ever, our community is experiencing the value of nature in supporting our mental health, physical well-being, and quality of life. Throughout the pandemic, visitor after visitor shared their thanks and appreciation for free access to trails and facilities to support their well-being. CNC will continue building meaningful connection to nature through access to greenspace and high-quality nature programing for the region and beyond. We are grateful to CNC’s incredible staff and board for their dedication and commitment to the mission and for their eternal optimism through challenging times. We also wish to say thank you to the members, volunteers, corporations, donors, and foundations, who supported CNC through 2020 and allowed us to serve the community with access to nature.

Respectfully submitted,

PerspectiveThe events of 2020 caused uncertainty and incalculable impacts on all of us. Through it all, Chippewa Nature Center contributed to the quality of life in the region by providing an essential connection with nature for all people. We saw an increased need for local access to the outdoors and resources to support home and virtual learning. Staff committed to meeting those needs and our community responded with unprecedented use of the trails, educational resources, and outdoor programming, including many first-time visits and new members.

Due to the constraints imposed by COVID-19, CNC staff developed creative ways to achieve our mission. From mid-March through mid-July, all buildings were closed, including the Visitor Center and Nature Preschool, and all in-person school field trips, preschool, and public programs were cancelled, including major events and camp, resulting in significant revenue loss. CNC received federal relief through the Paycheck Protection Program, which helped off-set lost revenue. Trails remained open throughout the year as state-issued guidance allowed people to leave home to engage in local outdoor activities. CNC staff primarily worked from home with a limited number of essential-staff working on-site doing animal care, trail safety, security and basic business operations. Land & Facilities staff kept trails open while completing a multitude of land management and infrastructure projects. Program and marketing staff provided learning resources for preschool families, youth, teachers, families, and adults via our website, social media and e-news. Throughout spring, all of these learning opportunities remained free of charge and available for everyone. Following May’s catastrophic flooding, the Nature Study Building, home to camp and one preschool classroom, experienced nearly four-feet of water in the building. We are currently implementing a plan to make the building into a more flood-proof, three-season facility for programming.

How do you report on 2020 without mentioning a pandemic and a flood? Chippewa Nature Center, like many other organizations in the area, managed through both. Although trails were continually open, our facilities were closed from mid-March through mid-July and revenue was off significantly from Nature Day Camp and school programs that were cancelled. However, various funding sources through the CARES ACT helped replace some of that revenue. We certainly missed seeing all of you at the annual festivals that had to be cancelled, but if you were on the property, you couldn’t help but notice many were finding relief through nature on the trails. In 2020, expenses were $2,127,590 with revenue of $966,433 and endowment support of $1,161,157. We continue to be grateful for the generous support of individual donors, local foundations, sponsors and members, which in turn allows CNC to provide free daily admission to the public.

CONNECTING PEOPLE TO NATURE THROUGH A PANDEMIC

As we entered 2020, we were optimistic about our opportunity to build powerful connections between people and nature. We had just experienced a record year of attendance and we expected to see continued growth in 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic began having a significant impact on programs in early March and by mid-March, the Visitor Center closed and all in-person programming stopped. As our community and the world responded to this emergency, we learned new ways of building connections. Our most significant exhibit has always been our property and trails. That did not change; in fact, many more people in our community discovered the power and beauty of the natural world at Chippewa Nature Center. Seeking solace, managing stress and looking for a change in scenery brought record numbers of people to our trails. In addition, the Program and Marketing Departments partnered to produce a wide variety of self-guided resources including lesson plans for virtual students, scavenger hunts for adults and children, an online Bio Blitz, natural history videos and a series of Earth Week activities and videos. A conscious effort was made to increase the interpretive content of our social media platforms, including utilizing CNC’s Instagram account. With the start of in-person programming in July, the community’s appetite for programming was clear with excellent turnout for these outdoor, socially distanced opportunities. While 2020 was not the year we were expecting, it demonstrated the importance of nature and providing opportunities for connection.

Visitation ChangesIn previous years, we have counted attendance as the number of people who walk through the doors of the Visitor Center. We have always known this is only a proportion of the people visiting the Nature Center, as it omits those visitors who do not come indoors. This year, the Visitor Center closed to the public from March 14 through July 5, 2020 due to precautions taken to reduce the spread of COVID-19. Despite this extended closure and limitations on Visitor Center capacity once it was re-opened, we welcomed 12,095 visitors through the doors in 2020. This is slightly less than half the number we welcomed in 2019, but what this number does not reflect are the thousands upon thousands of people who walked the trails this year. A daily count of vehicles in parking lots during the months of March and April along with weekends in June, July and August yielded a vehicle count of over 9,000. While we don’t have a definitive number for trail use, it is clear that it has been significantly greater this year than at any time in our history.

Department of Programs

Public ProgramsThis year, we welcomed 3,899 people to public programs. Prior to March, we were able to host the Central Michigan Seed Swap (640 attendees), two Live Birds of Prey programs (154 and 104 attendees), two Snakes Alive programs (102 and 64 attendees) and the Groundhog’s Day Party (134 attendees). When we were able to re-start in-person programming in July, most programs were converted to pre-registered free programs (rather than drop-in programs) in order to limit attendance and collect contact information for attendees. Group sizes were limited to 25 or fewer in most cases. Registrants were asked to wear masks, practice distancing with those outside their household and refrain from attending if they felt ill. Most participants were more than willing to take these precautions and our in-person programs were frequently filled, even when the temperatures began to dip in November and December. We are so thankful our programs and time in nature are highly valued by our community.

Festivals and Major EventsThe nature of the COVID-19 virus prevented large group gatherings. Maple Syrup Day, Fall Harvest Festival, Nature at Night and the Nature Art Show and Sale were all cancelled due to the pandemic. The one bright spot was the Native Plant Sale, which we were able to host online with curbside pickup. Staff, members and visitors were excited to share their love of gardening and native plants around this event, especially in May when we were unable to do other in-person activities.

Lake Sturgeon at CNCIn October, CNC was offered the unique opportunity to host a lake sturgeon through the Saginaw Bay Watershed Initiative Network. We received the sturgeon in October, and the fish was named Nmé through an online naming contest in December. The fish will remain at CNC until late summer or early fall when it will be released into the Tittabawassee River as part of the sturgeon introduction program.

Flexible Learning in Uncertain TimesChippewa Nature Center has a long history of providing exceptional programs to school and scout groups in the form of field trips and school visits. This year, we added virtual programming to the mix as we provided high quality learning experiences to the youth of our region.

Strong partnerships with Bullock Creek and Coleman schools brought 404 programs to Bullock Creek Schools and 96 visits

with classes at Coleman Public Schools. No visits were made from mid-March through the end of the 2019-20 school year. However, when school started again in August, both districts enthusiastically accepted our offer to conduct outdoor visits and to support classes through virtual instruction if needed

Traditional school field trips were significantly limited in 2020 because public schools were prohibited from participating in them after March. Educators and program staff served 2,411 students in the spring of 2020, with most programs taking place prior to mid-March and a few virtual programs over the summer. In the fall, we served 978 students through one week of on-site programming with Pine River 5th grade classes, parochial school field trips, homeschool groups and virtual programs. In addition, we served 120 homeschool or virtual school students every two weeks throughout the fall through the At Home with Nature and Nature Adventures programs.

CNC was able to welcome 156 Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts to CNC for outdoor programs in 2020. These leaders and scouts were excited to have unique outdoor experiences guided by our professional staff.

Nature Preschool Our talented staff was able to maintain connection with and support Nature Preschool families through this very challenging year. The 2019-20 year met in person for the last time in mid-March. For the remainder of the school year, teachers connected with families through online lessons, small group meetings, sharing recorded stories and songs and providing prompts for at-home learning through play. We served 124 preschoolers this spring.

The summer was spent learning and reviewing COVID-19 protocol, talking with colleagues running summer programs and preparing to open for in-person preschool in September 2020. With 108 preschoolers enrolled, Nature Preschool became a fully outdoor program, bringing students inside only in cases of severe weather or dangerous conditions. Preschoolers explored, learned and connected with nature in meaningful ways throughout the fall under the guidance of our dedicated teaching teams.

As families experience the economic impacts of COVID-19, providing financial support for children’s participation in the program is critical. We continue to operate with funding from the Great Start Readiness grant from the Michigan Department of Education for 20 at-risk 4-year olds to attend our program at no cost to the family. In addition, we have funding from the Great Start Collaborative for at-risk 3-year olds, and CNC offers scholarships to families that may not qualify for these funding sources, but have a financial need for tuition assistance. We are grateful to The Charles J. Strosacker Foundation, Dow and several private donors for their financial support to keep this scholarship program running.

Nature Day CampIn the spring, as protocols were being developed and changed on a daily basis and schools remained closed to in-person classes, the Board of Directors made the difficult decision to suspend Nature Day Camp for the summer of 2020 in order to ensure the safety of campers, families and staff members.

With the cancellation of Nature Day Camp 2020, members of the Nature Day Camp team came together to create content for nine e-newsletters published from June to August. To help support campers and to keep the camp community connected, the newsletters brought a little of camp’s magic to the community. Each edition contained a much-loved camp song, ‘thought of the week’ video and stewardship challenge, and highlighted opportunities for families to connect with nature at CNC and in their neighborhoods. At the end of the summer, campers reported completing 67 stewardship projects including picking up trash around their neighborhood, tending a garden, making a butterfly feeder and pulling invasive exotics.

In the last week of July, in-person youth programming re-started. The Summer Adventures program hosted participants ages 4 to 13 for outdoor camp-like experiences. Approximately 80 campers attended these day-long, twice a week outdoor programs. Some of the adventures included biking the Chippewa Trail, exploring the Wetlands in waders, walking in the Chippewa River and froggin’ at Arbury Pond. The summer concluded with 20 participants attending two three-day sessions; Village and Creature Camp. Many families expressed how appreciative they were to have a safe, enriching experience for their children to participate in during a challenging summer.

LOOKING FORWARD As we move into 2021, we are optimistic about the opportunities that lay ahead. Staff are preparing to resume Nature Day Camp, continuing to build relationships with local school districts, crafting engaging adult and family public programs and waiting patiently to be able to welcome field trips back to CNC once again. Through it all, 2020 has solidified the important role CNC holds in the community, and we are fully committed to continue to seek innovative and engaging ways to connect all people to nature.

Department of Land & Facilities Tom Lenon

Director of Land & Facilities

Arbury Trail Resurfacing – The Arbury Trail was widened and repaved, making it a great universally accessible 1/4 mile loop next to the Visitor Center.

Chippewa Trail Bridge – After significant heaving of the old bridge, demolition of the old bridge and pilings for the new bridge were completed during the fall. Construction of the rest of the bridge has been delayed, but should be coming soon.

Maple Syrup Season – The pandemic made the sap season come to a screeching halt; only 12.5 gallons of syrup were made this year.

500 Year Flood – On May 18 with an already saturated ground and about 4 inches of rain and more to the north, CNC staff decided to remove the preschool equipment from the Nature Study Building (NSB), as it was looking like there was a possibility of water coming into the building. Flood waters were stabilizing around floor level of the NSB on the evening of May 19 when the Edenville Dam burst and the Sanford dam was breached and the area was immediately evacuated. As a result, flood waters of the Tittabawassee River then rose to a record high 35.05 feet (considered a 500-year flood), backing up the already flooded Chippewa and Pine Rivers. Water also rose to a record high of 4’ in the NSB. Water also rose to the floor level of the Homestead cabin, but did not enter. The Visitor Center’s River Overlook had water nearly touching the concrete base below the windows, which was similar to the 1986 flood. The NSB building was quickly gutted, washed, treated for mold and left to dry before restoration could begin. Other damage from the flood included: logs and debris on the trails, major erosion of the Homestead Road and damage to the Chippewa Trail bridge at the Ridge.

Facility Improvements – Both the Visitor Center and Nature Preschool received new roofs in 2020. The shingles on the Preschool building were replaced with a steel roof. Hail from a March storm caused leaking in the Visitor Center and so its roof was also replaced.

Invasive Exotics – Staff worked non-stop throughout the summer controlling invasive plants at CNC. Most of the priority areas were controlled at least once, and a few new areas were hit for the first in a long time. New areas included approximately 55 acres in the new Arbury property, 4.6 acres within the Meadow Mouse Trail, 9 acres north of Six Island Pond and 3 acres south of the Wetlands parking area. Each of these spots were heavily infested by undesirable plants.

Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area – Under the United States Forest Service, Great Lakes Restoration Initiative

(USFS-GLRI) grant, we were able to carry out survey work to prepare a plan for work to be completed in 2021 of phragmites, Japanese knotweed and woody species. Outreach continued to be carried out through Facebook, the website and through a MISIN tutorial video on how to report invasive species.

Arboretum – Arboretum highlights for the year included clean-up after the 500-year flood, planting and caging 51 new trees and shrubs, planting 0.5 acres of native grass and wildflowers and getting five new donor trees. Currently, 107 species of trees and shrubs are represented in the Arboretum and 415 plants have been labeled.

Deer Harvest – A total of 49 deer were harvested on CNC’s property by selected volunteers during the season as part of a managed hunt to control the population.

Easement Activities – The Burgoon Drain was dredged by the drain commissioner during the summer, and Consumers Power removed all woody debris from under CNC powerlines using a forestry mower in the fall.

Land Consulting Work – Consulting work in 2020 included planting native grasses and wildflowers at Emerson Park.

A total of 21 new species were first recorded at CNC in 2020. Two of the new species included fish, the 3-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) and the Iowa darter (Etheostoma exile). Nineteen other species first recorded at CNC included insects identified by an MSU research team:

Fall at the CNC Wetlands

SPECIAL WILDLIFE AND PLANT SIGHTINGSEach year, there are very exciting sightings of wildlife at CNC. Many sightings this year have not been recorded at CNC for some time. Some of the significant wildlife sightings in 2020:

• A northern shoveler was observed at the Wetlands on April 7. The last recorded sighting at CNC was in 1993.

• A horned grebe was observed on April 9 at the Wetlands. The last recorded sighting at CNC was in 2005.

• A merlin was observed on April 21. The last sighting at CNC was in 2011.

• A grey-cheeked thrush was observed on May 8. The last sighting at CNC was in 1989.

• A prothonotary warbler, which is a species of special concern in Michigan, was observed and photographed on May 14 near Peepers Pond. This was the second year in a row that it has been sighted in this location, with the previous sighting prior being in 1996. The only other recorded sighting was in 1989.

• A bullfrog was observed and its song recorded by a staff member on June 16 at Six Island Pond. This is the first recorded sighting of a bullfrog at CNC.

• A yellow-breasted chat was observed for several days at the Ridge property in June. The last sighting at CNC was in 1994.

• A northern saw-whet owl was caught on camera at the Wood Duck Pond area on November 9. The last sighting of this species of owl at CNC was in 2008.

• Approximately 50 monarchs were observed using the wildflowers of the Arboretum on September 3, and 15 were tagged.

• A peregrine falcon was photographed by the Wood Duck Pond on September 23.

• A bobcat was caught on cameras a few times during the fall.

• A horned lark was spotted at CNC on November 20. Although they can be seen in the area, the last sighting at CNC was in 1993.

• Other great bird sightings included: Snow goose, common raven, Carolina wren, rough-legged hawk, red-shouldered hawks, northern shrike, swamp sparrow, yellow-throated vireo, Philadelphia vireo, red-headed woodpecker, marsh wren, sedge wren, Lincoln sparrow, snow buntings, least bittern, Virginia rail, savannah sparrow, northern parula, orange-crowned warbler and the Tennessee warbler.

• River otters, Blanding’s and wood turtles and porcupines were other exciting wildlife seen throughout the year at CNC.

• Bird Banding – The 17th year of bird banding at the Wetlands area was completed. Twenty-three species were netted in 2020. The only new species captured this year was the white-breasted nuthatch, which is not uncommon, but just never captured over all the years. During the fall banding weekend, a total of 52 birds and 17 species of birds were captured. Forty-two were new birds and seven were warblers.

OUTREACH

Traditionally this department is quite active, participating annually in over 30 events throughout the Great Lakes Bay Region; however, 2020 was quite different. We participated in a total of seven regional events: Kids Day at the Mall in January, three events in February (Outdoor Expo/Wild Game Dinner in Midland, a Family Winter Fest in Bay City and Little Footprints Children’s Festival in Saginaw) and the Home and Garden Show the first weekend in March, before events were cancelled due to the pandemic. In August, RiverDays moved to a virtual event. We supplied videos of the rivers and offered a coloring sheet and scavenger hunt, as well as an outdoor, on-site touch-free display to do with the scavenger hunt. The last event of the year was the Midland Center for the Arts Halloween Bash, which was held outside with a touchless display on bats and owls with a take-home craft.

VOLUNTEERS

We wish to thank all our volunteers for their patience and understanding as we navigate the challenges related to COVID-19. Unfortunately, in 2020, the majority of CNC’s team of dedicated volunteers were unable to volunteer due to the cancellation of special events, outreach events, Nature Day Camp and corporate group work days.

While a significant number of volunteer opportunities were cancelled in 2020, we were able to offer some prior to the March COVID-19 restrictions. Then following strict protocols established by CNC using appropriate safety guidelines, we were able to have a very limited number of volunteers help on Homestead Sundays, as well as a few outside projects for Land and Facilities volunteers. New at CNC for 2020 was the opportunity to incorporate “Virtual Volunteer Hours” from the Oxbow Archeologists and the Nature Center’s Board of Directors and committees, as they continued to hold meetings through the use of ZOOM!

While our total numbers were significantly lower in 2020 due to the pandemic, a total of 90 volunteers were able to complete 1,886 volunteer hours during the year. Below are the names of those individuals who were able to share their time and expertise with CNC in 2020.

CNC would also like to recognize our five Special Interest Groups for providing a few programs or volunteering when possible in 2020: Jolly Hammer’s and Strings Dulcimers, MidMichigan Rock Club, Oxbow Archeologists, Valley Herb Society and Wild Ones - Mid-Mitten Chapter.
