Ever since I can remember, the excitement surrounding new plants is always something

we all look forward to. It’s one of the reasons why I love this business. You never

know what new innovation is hiding in the fields, or even more, what was created by a

talented breeder.

That is why we have invested so heavily in Bailey Innovations™, our new breeding

facility in Winterville, GA. Our approach towards introducing new plants is a thorough

one. We put plants to the test in every stage of evaluation from the pot, to the ground,

and to the grower. With the amount of new plants that flood the market, we feel it is

our responsibility to make sure it is market worthy. The new facility will ensure that we

meet this challenge and bring you only the best varieties that have been trialed and

tested rigorously.

In this Bailey 2019 New Variety brochure, you will see many great new plants. Some we

added to our portfolio because you asked for them and others we added because we

know you’ll love them. The varieties we are introducing via Bailey Consumer Brands

such as Endless Summer® Summer Crush™ are a testament to the talented approach

from our own breeders and breeder partners throughout the world.

We appreciate your enthusiasm and energy for great ornamental trees and shrubs, and

we will continue to responsibly meet the call by Growing What’s Next™ for your long-

term enjoyment.

At Bailey, we work hard to make sure we offer the best that breeders from

around the world have to offer. Our plant development team searches the

globe for unique plants from talented breeders. This year is no exception

with the introduction of First Editions® Berry White™ hydrangea which

was developed by our friends at Pépinières Renault in France. As Barry

White himself said: “I'm so thankful that you’re mine, your sweetness is my

weakness.” We agree Barry, we agree.

Some of the coolest new plants this year came from our breeders at Bailey

Innovations™. As Terri McEnaney mentioned, the newest introduction into

the Endless Summer® brand, Summer Crush™ is a complete game changer

and brings its unique raspberry-red color to a strongly blue and violet

collection. We’ve watched this plant for years in Georgia and it’s unique

color, compactness, and abililty to rebloom are exceptional.

We will be sharing more photos as the new Bailey Innovations™ facility is

developed. Our breeding team is hard at work creating new opportunities

for the future!

"I am the first to admit that perhaps I have not said as many kind words as I should have about mopheads.

However, I am really pleased to tell every buyer and garden center owner, large and small, to get your orders in

for Summer Crush. Bailey has gotten the genetics right with this one — strong stems, compact but vigorous, and

beautiful large pink mopheads. These are going to be in high demand. Order now or forever regret that you are

missing the prize."

It’s not just about blue or pink anymore! The intense, deep coloration found in Summer Crush™ is a true

differentiator in the hydrangea marketplace. With a profusion of big raspberry red or neon purple blooms,

Summer Crush™ is a color breakthrough in reblooming garden hydrangeas and a welcome addition to the

Endless Summer® brand. Bred by Bailey Innovations™, this new addition is the result of focused breeding

and years of production and field testing. Proven to be Zone 4 cold hardy and the most wilt resistant

Endless Summer® yet, this compact growing hydrangea with dark green glossy leaves fits smaller spaces in

the garden and is the perfect size for patio containers.

NEW TREES 2019

A cold hardy selection of Canada’s national tree with

dark green leaves that turn a fiery orange-red in the

fall. This maple is less particular about soil pH than

other varieties, but it prefers rich, well drained soil

and a sheltered location. With an overall ascending

habit, Inferno™ is relatively low maintenance. Jeffries

A stunning selection of Redbud, The Rising Sun™

brings colorful interest to the garden all season.

Spring brings a stunning display of vivid rosy pink

flowers on bare branches. Considered one of the

best gold leaf varieties, the leaves emerge apricot

to bronze and fade to shades of bright green-gold

hearts. New leaves emerge all summer displaying

orange and gold mimicking the sun rising in the

morning against a lush green backdrop that even the

hottest summer temps won’t burn. This small tree

makes a great specimen.

Full sized flowers on a dwarf plant! Meet Pugster Blue® - it's a whole new look for butterfly bush. This

compact plant reaches just 2' tall and wide but has the large, full flowers normally seen on a much larger

plant. It blooms non-stop from early summer through frost with true-blue flowers, each with a tiny yellow-

orange eye in the center. Thanks to thick, sturdy stems, the Pugster® series offers vastly improved hardiness

and winter survival over other types of dwarf butterfly bush. (CPBRAF)

Big flowers on a small plant! Pugster Periwinkle® is a whole

new look for butterfly bush - it offers a small, sturdy frame

with flowers the size you’d find on much larger plants.

Each bloom is a full, dense cluster of soft purple blooms,

emitting a honey-sweet fragrance and treating bees,

butterflies, and hummingbirds to a tasty snack. Like all

Proven Winners® butterfly bushes, it blooms all summer

without deadheading. Because of their thick, strong stems,

Pugster butterfly bushes have better hardiness and winter

survival in zone 5 than other dwarf varieties. (CPBRAF)

Blooming into late summer and early fall, Sweet Star® is covered in single flowers starting in late May, with excellent

rebloom throughout the summer. Flowers are followed by pretty orange fruit. Plants are nicely rounded with glossy

green leaves and stay very compact in habit. Sweet Star® originated from cold hardy wild collected Gardenia jasminoides

seed from the Beijing Botanical Garden. Reliably hardy in zone 7, it came through the record-setting 2013-14 winter in

Athens, Georgia with minimal frost damage. Further winter testing will tell if it is also hardy in zone 6b. Makes up quickly

This long-awaited introduction is a step forward in paniculata

breeding. With strong, upright stems and large cone-shaped

flower panicles that stay upright, this plant is a summer

stunner. Like the other paniculatas from Mr. Renault at

Pépinières Renault, the flower color starts out white in July

then progresses to dark pink. Coloring occurs from the

bottom and progresses to the top of the panicle. Berry White™

blooms a little later than Strawberry Sundae® and about the

same time as Vanilla Strawberry™. Color shades can vary

according to location, climate and type of soil. Our growers

like this plant, and we think you will, too. (CPBRAF)

We selected this new ninebark because of the stunning

foliage. Reddish new growth matures to deep red-purple

foliage that holds its color reliably all summer whereas

others take on brownish tones later in the season. We trialed

it in Georgia, and the summer color did not brown out. Add

to that, Fireside™ didn’t show any signs of powdery mildew

in field and production trials in multiple sites 2015-2017. The

leaf size is intermediate; bigger than Little Devil™ but smaller

than Diabolo®. Pinkish-white flowers bloom in spring and

foliage turns deep purple in fall. The plant habit is tidier than

other Physocarpus with a rounded, upright shape.

This beauty is a seedling selection from Vitex trifolia

‘Purpurea’ x V. agnus-castus that combines the

best of both parents. Flip Side™ is cloaked in 8-inch

panicles of fragrant, deep purple flowers that attract

a nonstop parade of pollinators. It’s also a strong

rebloomer. Flip Side™ got its name because the

greyish olive-green leaves are dusky purple on the

lower surface. While V. trifolia ‘Purpurea’ is only

hardy to Zone 9, Flip Side™ has been hardy in Athens,

Georgia for a number of years, surviving a Zone 7

winter. Flip Side™ is much more compact than either

parent. This is a very cool plant for warmer regions.

A seed strain selection from West Montrose farms in Canada, Baby

Blue® spruce has remarkable color reliability. The needles are a

vibrant blue that intensifies with age, growing evenly around the

branches creating a full appearance. While this tree grows slowly,

it has good vigor with a uniform and compact habit that requires

virtually no shearing to maintain. An excellent blue variety that

is somewhat slenderer than the common Colorado Blue spruce,

growing well in open areas.

Anna’s Magic Ball® arborvitae is a cute little sphere of cheerful

yellow foliage. It was developed in Canada, so you know that this

little plant isn’t bothered by winter weather and holds its color all

year-round. This nifty little native evergreen needs no pruning to

keep its tight, rounded shape and makes a nice addition to perennial

beds, rock gardens, troughs and containers, or any landscape

project. It’s petite size and well-behaved manner makes it an

especially nice choice for smaller yards and gardens.

Strongly pyramidal with a very narrow habit. A very cool new

evergreen that will add elegance to your garden all year round!

This narrow columnar selection of ‘Wintergreen’ has excellent

hardiness and dark green winter foliage color, and is fast-growing.

More narrow than Emerald Green. Selected by Art Boe of Faribault,

Aurora Honeyberry was bred as the companion to ‘Borealis’

by the University of Saskatchewan. This variety is sweeter

and more productive than its counterpart, with slightly larger

fruit. Similar in flavor to blueberries and producing earlier than

strawberries, Aurora can be eaten fresh, used in baking, as

jams, or jellies. Commercial growers will find this fruit easy to

pick, as a dry scar forms, the skin is fairly tough like Tundra

and the large size is easily visible on the upright habit of this

medium sized shrub. A good pollinator for Borealis, Tundra,

A beautiful new addition to the Fruit Punch® series! This Dianthus produces large, florist quality, fully double, raspberry

pink blossoms about 1 ¾ inch wide. Each serrated petal is framed by a razor thin white edge. Unlike other flowers that

might fade, Raspberry Ruffles maintains its raspberry pink color throughout its bloom season. A polished, upright habit

flowering will encourage them to rebloom in early fall. Fruit Punch® Dianthus are just the right size to edge the front of

Add texture and intrigue to the perennial border

features mimic Medusa’s mythological snakes. The

Flowers are a light amethyst purple forming

nearly 2 inch round clusters that put on a show

that slowly spread with no seedlings. A favorite

of butterflies and bees, it is largely left alone by

rabbits and deer.
