Naval Support Facility Dahlgren is located approx-imately 68 miles south of Washington, DC, 55 miles north of Richmond, VA and 23 miles east of Freder-icksburg, VA between the Potomac and Rappahan-nock Rivers.

The surrounding community is rich in history fea-turing the birthplaces of George Washington, James Madison, James Monroe and Robert E. Lee within a short drive. Nearby are several major Civil War battlefields, antebellum plantations, and state and national parks.

Founded in 1918, Naval Support Facility Dahlgren grew from a tiny proving ground for testing naval guns into one of the U.S. Navy’s largest research and development centers. Today, the installation is home to more than a half-dozen major military commands that contribute directly to a multitude of critical de-fense programs and operations on a worldwide scale.
