‘Bali Bake’ for the Jodie O’Shea Orphanage in Bali!

Every Tuesday, throughout the month of June, George Worgan, Alina Raileanu, Olivia Janes, Chelsea Tees and Aalijah Pond baked and sold a fantastic range of cakes to sell to their peers. These wonderful Year 7 pupils were supported by Year 12: Tyler Spiers, Liam Aguni, Rugile Liubsyte and Feranmi Babajide. They were inspired to hit the kitchen, due to the upcoming trip to Bali that Miss Richardson, our Vice Principal, is embarking on, at the end of July. When told about the trip and the struggles of the young people that live at the ‘Jodie O’Shea Orphanage,’ and the fantastic work that they do to support the orphans, our pupils became determined to raise at least £400 so that Miss Richardson could buy them supplies and give them the remaining funds as a gift. A fantastic array of cakes were produced and sold to pupils across the Academy. Their focus and determination led to them exceeding their target and raising a whopping £450! The Academy is incredibly proud of their work and Miss Richardson looks forward to presenting the funds on arrival.

GCSE Geography Trip

This term the Year 10 GCSE Geography pupils enjoyed two sunny days out at Walton on the Naze, on the Essex coast. This was organised in order to assist the pupils with the physical fieldwork element that they must answer questions on, in their GCSE Geography exam.

Whilst at the beach they collected data to compare the difference between the managed and unmanaged beaches. Once this work was done, however, there was still time to hunt for fossils (including shark teeth) and explore the Second World War pill boxes that can be found along the coast. A good day was had by all.

Annual Art Exhibition

The annual Art exhibition 2018 saw our largest collection to date, of GCSE and A Level work exhibited. The Diamond Jubilee Hall was packed with an array of personalised projects and pieces of artwork which showcased the talent and creativity of the pupils at Drapers’ Academy. The opening event gave family, friends, teachers and governors, the opportunity to spend an enjoyable evening celebrating the young artists’ hard work. Our young pianists added to the ambience of the evening by playing a range of classical and modern pieces, some of which they had written. Pupils from the year 10 Art group helped to serve an array of artistic canapés kindly made by Mrs Bangs and her year 10 pupils. Friends of Drapers’ generously gave up their time to serve refreshments to guests.

Inspiration came from all directions, including; a war veteran interviewed by Daisy Robbins who had been inspired for her World War II project. Mr Cox, 96, came along to admire the work that Daisy had created in response to listening to stories of his war experiences.

We are grateful to Year 13 Jack Petchey winner, Lukas Povilonis, who has donated his sculpture entitled ‘What Lurks Beneath the Ocean’ (see below). This is now on permanent display in the Science area for all to enjoy and to inspire future generations. Nicola Leks, another year 13 student, has been commissioned to do a painting for a private client who was impressed by her landscape triptych entitled ‘Do We Appreciate the World Around Us?’

The many comments made on the opening evening and during the subsequent week while the exhibition remained on display, celebrated the high standard of each and every pupil, many finding it hard to choose a favourite.

Mr Luckhurst wrote, “Wow!! Every year I stand in awe at the quality of the Art produced by our pupils and students. This year I am amazed by how diverse the exhibition is. The time, effort and creativity shown by Drapers’ artists is better than any school in the country! I am one very proud Head teacher (smiley face)”.

Vice Chair of Governors, Alisa Blunt, wrote, “Many congratulations on an excellent and inspiring exhibition, with such creative and beautiful work. Thank you too for the lovely piano music, canapés and warm welcome.”

The Art department would like to wish all of our pupils and students every success in their future endeavours.

The Brilliant Club

Over the last term, 12 pupils from Year 8 have been participating in the Scholar’s Programme, run by the Brilliant Club. The aim of the programme is to increase the number of pupils progressing from schools, like our own, to highly selective universities. The pupils were given the opportunity to work with a PhD tutor over a series of trips and seminars, held both at school and at prestigious universities. The pupils were tasked with discussing the question ‘Why Are We Here?’ looking at perspectives from both Science and Philosophy. Their tutor, Stephanie Fincham-Campbell, commented on how excellent our pupils were at discussing and articulating ideas and arguments based on evidence. The final assignment (a 2,000 word essay) was completed by all 12 pupils, with two of our pupils gaining marks of over 80 (equivalent to working at an excellent GCSE standard!).

Fortunately, the pupils were able to celebrate their achievements with a graduation ceremony held at the University of Cambridge (St John’s College). The pupils did absolutely brilliantly over the course and we expect to see many of them attending prestigious universities in the future!

Kew Gardens!

After a longer journey than planned, Y9 arrived at Kew Gardens around 11.00am. In groups, pupils spent several hours visiting the many attractions at Kew. The most popular attractions included:

- The Great Pagoda is a ten-story octagonal structure, almost 50m high and is one of the landmark buildings as it is visible for miles around.

- The Palm House is an iconic Victorian glasshouse. The rainforest climate inside supports a unique collection of tropical plants from some of the most threatened environments on earth.

- In the Princess of Wales Conservatory, pupils explored plants from ten different climate zones, including cacti, orchids, carnivorous plants and the remarkable titan arum, which produces one the largest flowering structures and foulest odours in the plant kingdom.

- 18 metres above the woodland floor, the Treetop Walkway offered pupils breath-taking views across the Gardens.

Other attractions included visiting the Temperate House, the largest Victorian glasshouse in the world and The Hive, which gave pupils a unique multi-sensory experience designed to highlight the extraordinary life of bees.

Before travelling back to school, pupils enjoyed lunch in one of the designated areas and there was also an opportunity to purchase souvenirs. With the British summer on our side together with a fantastic location, the day was enjoyed by all!

Silver Duke of Edinburgh Practice Expedition 2018

On Wednesday 13th June, our year 12 students set off after school for the South Downs to complete their Practice Silver DofE Expedition. The campsite was situated at the foot of Ditchling Beacon and the pupils were treated to stunning views of the surrounding scenery. The next morning the students set off bright and early for their first day of walking but unfortunately the weather decided not to be kind and they spent the morning battling wild winds, fog, rain and rather chilly conditions for a June morning. Nevertheless, they continued on their route and were rewarded with the late arrival of the sun for their journey back to camp that afternoon. The next couple of days the weather was kinder and the students impressed their leaders with their excellent navigational skills throughout the three-day expedition. They are now busy preparing for their final assessed expedition due to take place in July.

Duke of Edinburgh Assessed Expedition

On Tuesday 10th July, the Bronze and Silver Drapers’ Academy DofE groups departed school and headed to the New Forest, ready to take part in their final assessed expedition for DofE. Pupils had already participated in several practice expeditions this year, in preparation for this final, important expedition and all were in good spirits as the coach set off at 4.00pm for the long drive down to Hampshire. On arrival, pupils set up camp and settled in to their new surroundings at Hollands Wood Campsite. The following morning, the Silver group set off bright and early to start their expedition whilst the Bronze groups prepared for a day of training, prior to starting their expedition the following day. The Silver group demonstrated excellent navigational skills on their first day and successfully found their way back to camp later that afternoon in good time to watch the England match in the evening. Unfortunately, the New Forest ponies made the most of the pupils’ absence during the evening and took the opportunity to raid several tents, treating themselves to a few tasty snacks! The following morning the Silver group were up ready to once again leave bright and early, closely followed by the Bronze groups who also excelled in their navigational abilities during the day, with all groups reaching Rushcroft Farm campsite later that day at the times specified on their route cards. All pupils spent their final day hiking towards Milford-on-Sea where they completed their expedition and were rewarded with a cooling ice cream. The assessor was impressed with all groups and all pupils passed the expedition element of their DofE award. Well done to all pupils who took part!

Sixth Form Apprentice Exhibition June 27th Apprentice 18

We were kindly invited to an Apprenticeship Exhibition organised by the Stationers’ Company. The event was held at the award winning Ravensbourne University, located on the Greenwich Peninsula. Students in Y12 had the opportunity to speak to people from a range of professions; from Barclays throgh to BT and The Independent, about the new degree Apprentiships that they are offering. Degree Apprentiships are becoming more attractive and are a popular alternative to the conventional degree as the student pays no fees and is trained in-house by the company that they work for. Students also earn a wage whilst in training.

Our students were able to network with some of the representatives who were attending and were able to discuss the possibility of work experience. This will add to their CVs and enhance their applications to either university or work. The Stationers’ Company were very quick to applaud the Sixth Form students who attended and have invited us to the next Apprentice Event that they are planning for 2019.

Primary Sports Day

On Monday 18th June, Drapers’ Academy hosted the 6th annual primary school sports day. This year we hosted our largest number of schools with 8 primary schools competing on the day. Our year 10 sports captains and some of our sixth form students ran all the events on the day supported by the PE faculty. The day was fantastic with some very good results and ended with Broadford being named as champions for 2018. The other schools in attendance were; Mead, Drapers’ Maylands, Drapers’ Brookside, Drapers’ Pyrgo, St Ursulas, Hilldene and Harold Court. We received some excellent feedback from the day on how well our pupils and students ran each event and how smoothly it ran all day.

Sports Awards Evening

On Tuesday 17th July Drapers’ Academy held their 7th annual sports awards. We had over 60 award winners on the night, our biggest awards ceremony ever. Our special guest for the evening was Jermaine Anderson who is a current League 1 player with Peterborough United, having previously played as a youth player for Arsenal FC. We were very grateful that Jermaine could attend and answer questions that pupils had prepared for him at the end. The main award, the Elite sports trophy was collected by a year 7 pupil for the first time ever, Nick Nkansa-Dwamena, for his involvement with teams in Drapers’ Academy and also for his involvement with West Ham United. Other notable awards saw Denise Robbins collect the Sports Leadership award and the Sportswoman of the year award for year 10 and year 13 leavers Mayokun Afolabi and Samson Abodunrin collect the Student coach of the year awards. This was also the first year in which we had two teams that have competed in National competitions nominated for team of the year; the eventual winners being the year 7 football team.

The whole night was enjoyed by all with over 200 parents and carers attending the event to support their children. Thank you to all that attended and continued support, we look forward to more success next year.

Drapers’ Academy Sports’ Day

On Thursday 5th July we held our annual sports day in school. The morning events saw all year groups competing in throwing and jumping events as well as 800m. In the afternoon the whole school came to the field to support their houses. Pupils enjoyed ice cream and a BBQ. During the day which saw many school records broken in various athletics events. These pupils’ records will now be added to our school records board in the PE corridor. Some stand out events were the tug of war, which also saw the teachers take on the sixth form students, and the relay were some excellent times were recorded. A special mention to Liam Aguiyi in the sixth form who announced all the races and announced all results throughout the afternoon. Overall winners for sports day were Franklin house with Head of House, Miss Kelly, stating it was well deserved and she was proud of her house for finishing first in sports day for the first time.

Sixth Form Induction Day 2018

We were impressed with the large numbers of Y11 student who attended the Sixth Form Induction day on the 22nd June 2018. Students started the day wit a brief introduction to the staff who work in the Sixth Form and then they were free to attend ‘taster lessons’ in either the subjects that they have elected to study at A Level next year, or in subjects that they may be considering. In addition, students were able to attend a presentation covering the EPQ qualification.

A Level teachers put on a variety of challenging activities to both engage the students’ academic curiorisity as well as entice them to study their subject. At lunch the students were provided a buffet lunch, which was very well accepted. The final session of the day was based around the students breaking a series of codes in order to establish clues that led to a final prize, kept in a securely locked box. The entire day was a positive one. Students were challenged and introduced to the levels of academic rigour that are required at A Level. Summer work was set by all subjects and students will be required to complete this prior to starting their A Levels in September.

The Prince of Peace Visits

On Monday 9th July, Dr Mark Prince, the current MBC Cruiserweight Champion (ex- International IBF and WBO Champion) visited Year 10 to speak to them about knife crime and the importance of valuing themselves. Dr Prince runs the Kiyan Prince Foundation, created following the tragic stabbing of his 15 year old son, Kiyan Prince in May 2006. He spoke passionately about the challenges in his personal life, from childhood to adulthood; refusing to allow hate and anger to consume him, in order to move forward. His message and actions were truly inspirational! On the day, Dr Prince brought 80 copies of his autobiography ‘The Prince of Peace’ for Year 10, which were all personally signed. We look forward to working with Dr Prince in the new academic year, as the Kiyan Prince Foundation will mentor and coach a number of pupils throughout their Year 11, to ensure that they maximize their potential and make positive life choices.

Year 11 Leavers Ball!

On Wednesday 27th June, the Year 11 leavers celebrated the ending of their GCSE exams with a Leavers’ Ball at Stockbrook Manor Country Club, Billericay. The amazing location, overlooking the Essex countryside was enhanced by the beautiful dresses and smart suits worn by the pupils. The evening was a great success which included canapés, fruit cocktails, a lovely two course meal, numerous awards being given, and ending with the announcement of the King and Queen of the Ball, Harry Warren and Maisie Hazlewood. A thoroughly enjoyable evening was had by both pupils and staff!

Wimbledon Magic!

On Tuesday 10th July, we took eight pupils to Wimbledon via public transport. These students were selected because they are always helpful, have outstanding behaviour and represent Drapers’ Academy at sporting fixtures. During our day at Wimbledon, on court two, we watched the Senior Men’s Doubles, after this we watched Del Potro thrash Simon. This was a very exciting, action packed game with lots of cheering and applauding. We also enjoyed a musical performance on the Tea Lawn and visited the Wimbledon shop where students purchased some merchandise. It was a great day had by all; a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Year 7 London Trip!

On Monday 1st July, half of year 7 went to the Southbank for the day. The trip involved various activities which included walking along Westminster, over the River Thames, along the Southbank where we stopped to have lunch and ice cream at the London Eye. Following lunch we continued our walk along the Southbank passed the National Theatre and up to Shakespeare’s Globe, where pupils admired the views of St. Paul’s Cathedral and took some wonderful photos. Lastly, we walked up to Southwark Bridge where we departed.

The Oak Centre

The Oak Centre is a dedicated area of the Academy, which allows pupils to access additional support for both their learning and emotional wellbeing. Staff and pupils have invested a great deal of time to develop the garden. Pupils have successfully grown potatoes, sweetcorn and onions.

We have also welcomed five chickens, two rabbits and four guinea pigs. Pupils have been fantastic at caring for the animals and learning how to handle them.

Mrs Stallard, SENCO

Stubbers!

On Monday 11th June, the PE Faculty ran a rewards trip for pupils in years 7-10. Pupils were selected to attend this trip for various reasons such as excellent behaviour, sporting success and positively contributing to the PE Faculty. Pupils took part in different activities including rock climbing, all-terrain boarding, kayaking and raft building. Pupils particularly enjoyed the raft building, as this took place at the end of the day and all year groups competed against one another to build the best raft. Pupils had the opportunity to get to know pupils from other year groups and they were able to get lots out of the day. The sunshine just made the day even better!

Mersea Island Trip

On Wednesday 27th June to Friday 29th June, 149 Year 7 pupils and 20 staff, made the journey down the A12 to Mersea Island for the annual Year 7 residential trip.

The purpose of the residential is to give pupils a chance to take part in a number of outdoor pursuits, as well as helping to develop important life skills such as organisation, teamwork and resilience as well as giving them a chance to make new friends across their year group. The main aim, however, was to have fun!

On arrival, the pupils were organised into their tents in which they would stay for the 2 nights. The separate boys and girls camps contained ten tents each, in which eight pupils could reside. After unpacking and setting up their camp, they were soon into their activities.

The activities vary widely at Mersea Island; from Archery to orienteering, the pupils took part in a dozen different activities across the 3 days. As well as this, the Thursday night culminated in a disco (although this coincided with the football!).

Our pupils’ behaviour was fantastic! Staff at the centre commented on how polite, considerate and respectful pupils were during activities and around the site.

The trip was a great success, dampened only by the slight hiccup on the way home with regards to coach travel (!), and a broken finger for one of the boys!

Huge thanks go to the staff who gave up their evenings to ensure the trip was possible. They are as follows; Mr Bannister, Miss Alphonse, Miss Duck, Mrs Dunn, Mr Aukett, Mr Embling, Miss Lee, Mrs Paolino, Miss Hussein, Miss Abdullah, Miss Costin, Mr Wilcox, Mr Batt, Mrs Winn, Miss Dyson, Mr Commer and last but not least, Mr Wood.

Year 7 Achievements

I am proud of how brilliant the year 7s were at camp. They all participated in the activities and really enjoyed themselves. Each group encouraged each other to overcome any obstacles that they may have faced. Whether it was zip wiring, caving, archery or one of the many other activities, all the pupils were up for the challenge. The Mersea camp leaders commented on how well behaved the pupils were. The pupils were perfect ambassadors for Drapers’ Academy.

The weather, as always, was lovely.

The trip was topped off with the annual camp disco on the Thursday. This clashed with the World Cup! This time a choice had to be made by pupils… Would they choose the World Cup or go to the disco? The night was a success for both!

One pupil said that he had really enjoyed himself and had made friends with people that he did not realise were even in his year group.

Although we were let down by the coach company on our return, this did not dampen the year 7s spirits. Eventually after three days of fun in the sun, the year 7s arrived home. All exhausted but happy.

Roll on next year!

Mrs Brooks, Year 7 Pastoral Manager

Year 8 Achievements

This term, Year 8 pupils have achieved so much! The following pupils successfully participated in the Bike Club, learning how to ride safely:

Tommy Hunt

Adam Harrod

Isabelle Squibb

Frankie Bland

Melisa Krasniqi

Ruby Neagen

Adella Jackson

Ambamae Chapman

In addition, a number of pupils became Youth Travel Ambassadors and ran a workshop for the year 7s. They did several activities with them, all based around travel. They did such a good job that the year 7s all said that they want to join the YTA group in September!

Year 9 Achievements

Yr 9 have had a fantastic year and as their Pastoral Manager, I am very proud of the way they behave and conduct themselves, both inside and outside of the Academy. This year we have had some new pupils join the year group, and I am pleased to say that they have all settled in very well and are working hard.

Every pupil in year 9 completed their Pathways options for GCSE study and they have all been advised of their subjects for year 10 and 11.

Attendance for year 9 was 93.56% at the end of this year. Please continue coming into school every day to avoid missing any of your GCSE learning. Next year’s target will be 96%-I’m confident that we will achieve this. If for any reason your child is absent, please contact the office on the first day of their absence.

Some excellent school trips have been held this year, including the most recent to Kew Gardens, where once again the pupils behaved impeccably. Another group of pupils were invited to attend a series of workshops to support them in thinking about their options for the future and higher education which included a visit to Rose Bruford University. Thank you to all these pupils for their excellent efforts and for representing Drapers’ Academy so well.

A special mention should go to Kailen Davey and Max Spencer for their continued sporting achievements and good luck to Kirsty White who is undertaking work experience over the summer at the Hopefield Animal Sanctuary.

Have a wonderful summer break year 9, relax and get ready for year 10 and the start of your GCSE study.

Ms Knight, Year 9 Pastoral Manager

Year 10 Achievements

Year 10 have worked hard revising and completing their first set of GCSE mock exams. This gave the pupils valuable experience of sitting exams in the hall in preparation for next year.

A number of Year 10 pupils participated in the Brilliant club this year. We are extremely proud of their achievements and in particular, the achievement of one pupil who was awarded a distinction.

We received a high number of prefect applications, which were all of a very high standard. The references supplied by teachers were amazing and it was lovely to hear how highly the pupils are regarded by staff.

Year 10 pupils also helped with the Year 6 induction day, showing them around and being great ambassadors of Drapers’ Academy.

Mrs Harper, Year 10 Pastoral Manager

Year 11 Achievements

My year 11’s… what can I say except that I feel extremely honoured and privileged to of been their Pastoral Manager for their last year at Drapers’ Academy.

I have had the joy of watching them develop into strong, well-mannered, kind and respectful young adults. The relationships and respect that has been nurtured throughout their time at Drapers’ is something I will never forget but something I hope to experience again one day.

I am proud of each and every one of them, and wish them every success, joy and lots of happiness in their future endeavours, and I look forward to hearing about their new journeys!

Ms Burroughs, Year 11 Pastoral Manager

Bespoke Exercise Books

This term, pupils across the Academy participated in a pupil voice questionnaire, to help shape September’s new marking and feedback guidelines, and voted in order to choose the new designs for our bespoke Drapers’ Academy exercise books.

The new, much improved designs are now in for printing and we look forward to continuing to improve them and their content, with the help of our pupils!

Diversity Week

Diversity Week is a national event that was set up by the charity ‘Just Like Us’ and ran for the first time in 2017. The aim is help counter some of the negative and challenging experiences that young LGBT+ pupils face during their education as demonstrated by the statistics below.

Young people in schools

• 9 in 10 hear homophobic remarks• 6 in 10 suffer homophobic bullying• 7 in 10 say homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying affects their school work• 2 in 5 contemplate suicide• 1 in 2 self-harm

Negative experiences such as these undermine aspirations and educational achievement thus limiting the academic potential and life chances of potential LGBT+ pupils.

This year Drapers’ Academy marked it second annual participation in Schools Diversity Week with a series of lunchtime events and form time activities. Facts and statistics were shared with pupils during form time such as ‘7 in 10 fans have witnessed homophobic abuse at game’. This helped the pupils to consider the breadth of the problem of homophobic language and bullying. A video clip of a speech from the Prime Minister specially created for Schools Diversity Week pledging her support also reinforced the point that everyone has the right to a safe and supportive education. Pupils then considered some of the important legislative reforms that have acted as landmarks for the progress made in LGBT+ rights, for example from the 1967 Sexual Offences Act to the 2014 Married Couples Act, this taught pupils to understand that acts of discrimination against LGBT+ people are against the law.

At lunch time, the pupils created rainbow patterns on book marks. This was in reference to the meaning of the Pride symbol which helps to represent the diversity of human emotions. The sixth form helped pupils to investigate the role of businesses and companies in showing support for the LGBT community such as the manufacturers of Skittles. Pupils learned that the plain packaging on some packets of Skittles was that businesses way of showing support for Pride Month. Acrostic poems and pledges of support were created to celebrate diversity and tackle the problem of homophobic language and bullying. This was supported by a series of posters put on display showing key figures in politics, business and entertainment acting a role models to stamp out hate speech and inaccurate stereotyping.

Havering Learning Partnership Awards Evening

On the 21st June, Drapers’ Academy hosted the Havering Learning Partnership Awards Evening. This annual event celebrates the achievements in educational provision across the borough. This year, we won the award for ‘Most Innovative and Effective use of Pupil Premium Funding.’ This is additional funding that school receive in order to support the pupils that attend, who are classified as being ‘disadvantaged’ At Drapers’ Academy part of the Pupil Premium funding is used to fund five non-teaching Pastoral Managers, who work support the 51% of disadvantaged pupils that attend the school, as well as their non-disadvantaged counterparts. The Pastoral team monitor, track and put in place interventions to support the pupils in their care. Every half term they identify the ten disadvantaged pupils in each year group that are underachieving the most and/or are a cause for concern; planning support to implement in the next half term and sharing this information with staff. This has led to significant improvements in disadvantaged pupils being engaged in their learning and improvements in attendance and relationships across the school. We are incredibly proud that our fantastic pastoral provision has been recognised and acknowledged by the Borough!

Friends of Drapers’ Schools (FODS)

The prime objective of the FODS is to support the activities and social events of all Drapers’ Schools in Harold Hill, as well as providing an opportunity to meet other parents and families, and be part of the wider Drapers’ family.

Our fundraising activities will benefit every child who attends a Drapers’ school in the form of special leaving parties as they pass through one part of the school to another. We also aim to purchase one off items that the schools say they would like, such as Gazebos for outside learning.

As a parent or carer of a child at one of Drapers’ Schools you are automatically enrolled as a member and we look forward to meeting with you at our first meeting in the autumn term.

Please tick the appropriate box if you do not wish to be included in our Friends Association.

If you would like more information or to become more involved please contact Mrs Emmins by email at [email protected].

London to Brighton Bike Ride

Seven staff members of Drapers’ Academy completed the London To Brighton Bike Ride in June, raising an eyewatering £650 for the British Heart Foundation. This arduous ride was a fantastic accomplishment, after many months of training. Their efforts have been a huge inspiration to all!
