OUR CHAPTER

Ronald McDonald House Charities of Alabama (RMHCA) is an independent, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that provides comfort and care to the whole family whenthey must travel far from home to seek medical care for their sick or injured child.

The charity envisions a community where families never confront their challenges alone but instead find comfort, encouragement and support in their quest for hope, happiness and growth.

Each night, we care for 73 families at our Ronald McDonald House, located just one block from Children’s of Alabama and UAB Hospital. The Ronald McDonald Family Rooms at DCH Regional Medical Center in Tuscaloosa and at UAB Women & Infants Center in Birmingham provide respite for families whose children are cared for on the pediatric unit and NICU. Our Happy Wheels Cart brings the hospitality and warmth of our charity to families who are waiting to see the doctors within Children’s of Alabama.

Trenton Moore has cerebral palsy and came to Birmingham for what his family hoped would be a life-changing surgery.

“Before we got here, Trenton didn’t realize he had the possibility of walking,” Melinda Dooley, his grandmother, said.

But Trenton’s future was open to a new path because of his family’s determination and the Ronald McDonald House.

“Caring for Trenton wouldn’t have been possible if we’d had to stay at a hotel,” his grandfather, Vince Dooley, said.

The Ronald McDonald House doesn’t just save families travel and lodging expenses. It’s a comforting environment where they can be supported and encouraged.

“There’s always hope. But before the Ronald McDonald House it was more like feeling helpless. You just hope for the best and we’ve had a better outcome than I could ever hope for,” Vince said.

In 2018, we witnessed a tremendous transformation in all things. In January, we opened our Max and Lorayne Cooper East Wing expansion, nearly doubling our footprint, while also opening a new Ronald McDonald Family Room at UAB Women & Infants Center. These expansions combined with internal program growth like our Happy Wheels Cart enabled us to serve more than 7,800 families in 2018. Transformational indeed!

Thanks to the support we received from you, our donors and our volunteers, we were able to exceed our annual revenues by 12% and increased our volunteer base by 614%.

Having reached our strategic goals with the completion of the East Wing and new Family Room, we updated our Strategic Plan in 2018. The RMHCA Impact Strategy for 2019-2021 focuses on three strategic priorities: improving operational performance, reinforcing/expanding support and expanding service reach. The initiatives and corresponding metrics will ensure our continued program growth and sustainability through 2021 and beyond, so that we may keep families together and near to the resources they need to care for their sick children.

As always, YOU are an important part of transformation—you help turn sadness into a smile, fear into encouragement, and despair into hope.

Thank you for enabling us to provide a community that fosters family togetherness.

Gratefully yours,

Chief Executive OfficerRonald McDonald House Charities® of Alabama

RMHCA ExpansionIn January 2018, RMHCA and its supporters celebrated the opening of the Max and Lorayne Cooper East wing expansion at the Ronald McDonald House as well as the opening of the charity’s newest Ronald McDonald Family Room, located at UAB Women & Infants Center in Birmingham.

The generous community of RMHCA supporters made this expansion possible and should feel proud to know that their efforts have helped so many more families who deserve to be together, even when they travel hours from home for their child’s medical care.

At our House, we provided 1,699 family stays in 2018. That’s 803 more than in 2017!

At the Ronald McDonald Family Room at UAB Women & Infants Center, we helped 808 families we may not have been able to reach before.

To help serve our expansion, our number of volunteers has increased 614%.

2,861 donors contributed financial & in-kind donations that supported our program budget and household supply needs.

Our increased annual program budget of $2 million provides so much to families who want to be together.

Ronald McDonald Family Room® at UAB Women & Infants Center

This special space is located within the Continuing Care Nursery (CCN) at UAB Women & Infants Center. This is so important because parents don’t have to leave their child to get a meal, a shower, some sleep or even just to relax.

In the kitchen, guests can sit at one of the tables to enjoy a snack or play a board game. Steps away, comfy couches are the perfect spot to read, watch TV or join one of the craft activities that happen each week. There is also a washer and dryer, showers and 3 sleeping rooms.

808 families enjoyed the amenities and/or sleep rooms in 2018

Parents were able to grab a snack, participate in activities, wash laundry, watch TV or read and use the sleep rooms 11,877 times.

A team of 4 RMHCA staff members (1 full-time, 3 part-time) manage the Family Room

Parents slept 334 nights in our 3 sleeping rooms to be near to their baby

Ronald McDonald Family Room® at DCH Regional Medical Center

This unique room provides a quiet area for parents to rest and take a break while their child is in the hospital.

Located within the pediatric unit and steps from the NICU, the Ronald McDonald Family Room at DCH Regional Medical Center keeps the family unit together. Research also shows that being close helps parents communicate better with doctors and nurses.

The Tuscaloosa community is generously involved in making sure the family room is stocked with supplies.

Families visited more than 550 times to rest and relax in the reading chairs, to grab a snack, use the computer, wash laundry and enjoy the playroom.

Because of donors like you, RMHCA was able to surpass its Annual Fund budget goal of $2 million in 2018. None of this would have happened without the stalwart support of 2,861 individuals, foundations, businesses and community groups. RMHCA is proud to report our board and staff giving is at 100% again in 2018.

The largest stream of revenue was from individual donors from our Max Cooper Society. This leadership giving society includes individuals who gave $1,000 or more annually to the charity. The society grew exponentially in new donors and in revenue. These generous annual donors were 35 % of the contributions received and we saw a 128% increase of this revenue. Foundations and Corporations continued to support their investment last year with 9% of the contributions received in 2018. Our mission partner, McDonald’s remains a steadfast partner through various channels with 10% of the contributions received in 2018. Workplace giving also had an increase of 112%, accounting for 9% of contributions.

We continue to spread awareness and raise crucial funds with our specialty vehicle tag donors and raised approximately $30,000.

RMHCA receives no federal or state grants. The community’s generosity powers our charity.

Approximately 57% of our program budget was met thanks to Max Cooper Society memberships, United Way of Central Alabama and workplace giving, community events, pop tab recycling, vehicle tag sales and donations made by board, staff and guest families.

100% of a donation made directly to RMHCA remains in Birmingham to support families served through our programs.
