Christopher Columbus didn’tknow what he was missing. In 1493, the famous explorersailed past a little islandin the northern Caribbean
Sea and, without ever coming ashore, namedit St. Christopher. Perhaps he named it aerhimself, or maybe he was honouring the patronsaint of travellers, no one knows for sure. ButColumbus never set foot on the lush and fertileisle, which would soon see its name shortenedto St. Kitts.
In 1623, a small group of English settlersarrived, followed a few years later by the French.Over the centuries, as Europeans came to the
Caribbean in search of gold, sugar, and otherriches, St. Kitts remained at the center of theregion’s rich culture and history.
Today, St. Kitts and its sister island Nevis—which combine to comprise the smallest nationin the Western Hemisphere—are still welcom-ing visitors searching for wealth, but now it’sin the form of adventure and activity: beachesand bird watching; reefs and rainforest; sail-ing, shopping, swimming, and safari; or simplylazing in the sun.
And then there is the golf.St. Kitts & Nevis is emerging as a top golf
destination, and doing so slowly and carefullyin order to keep the emphasis on quality. Right
