Assalamualaikum and Salam Sejahtera.

Dear Scholars,

Wow! Seems like it was just yesterday that we were born. But it has been 10 years. 10 great years. Born 21st July 2006. A lot has happened since. We skipped the crawling stage and sped off on our marathon to be supplier of leadership talent to our beloved na-tion. We started off with having just 6 scholars and now within 10 years we sponsor 125 scholars every year across all pro-grammes. The Alumni is growing in numbers and today stand at around 280, occupying important roles in many organisations. Last year we celebrated our 10th anniversary with a grand dinner attended by our Prime Minister YAB Dato Sri Mohammad Najib Tun Razak.

In 2012 we undertook a strategic review which saw us becoming a supplier of leadership talent to the country. We broaden our list of courses and widen our list of bond servicing organisations to meet our aspiration. Our leadership programme was revamped to meet the new challenges. Our scholars are now found in the top Universities in the world, MIT, Harvard, Yale, Cornell, Ox-ford, Cambridge, UCL, Imperial, LSE, ANU, Melbourne and many others. Last year we ventured into China and our scholars have now gained admission to Tsinghua University, one of the top Universities in China. Both Rhodes and Chevening partner us in providing scholarships for Malaysians to reputable universi-ties in UK and Oxford (via Rhodes). Through our Asia scholar-ship programme we bring deserving Palestinians, Bangladeshis, Indonesians and Southern Thais to Malaysia to study and return to their countries upon graduation to help with the development back home. We change the lives of many unfortunate children in Malaysia through our Outreach programmes for both the rural and urban poor. Today a rubber tappers son, tomorrow a gradu-ate from Berkeley. These are lofty heights that we thread. We shall persevere and continue for the sake of our country.

My plea to our beloved scholars is keep your feet firmly an-chored to the ground, to the land we call Malaysia. Remember your akad with YK. Let our dream be your dream. Serving the nation. Bringing it to greater heights. Respected and envied by the rest of the world. Our future is in your hands.

Today we are on a long journey together. We take great pain and effort to help make sure that this country will be led by capa-ble leaders in the future, not only with a sharp intellect but also with a big heart. We hope we would leave a legacy behind that will long inspire others as we enter our second decade of exist-ence. To the next 10 years.

YK was established in 2006. Since inception until 2016, a total of 646 scholarships have been awarded across 4 programmes.

There were 53 Global and Watan

scholars graduated in 2015 and

2016; 76% has gotten or identi-

fied placement. Placement pro-

cess usually starts 6 months

before graduation. Deferment

request are reviewed on a case-

to-case basis based on the ap-

proved guidelines.

YK Pre - Departure Briefing

YK Pre - Departure Briefing is a session devel-oped by YK for the Khazanah Global scholars before they leave the country to pursue their studies either in the UK, US or Australia. During the session, scholars will be briefed on their responsibilities as YK scholars, the ex-pectations, emergency contact details, some survival tips, experience sharing and etc. We are fortunate to have fellow alumni and the Board of Trustees to share their experiences as well as giving advice on how to maximise the individual potentials to the YK scholars that will be studying abroad.

YK Structured Leadership Programme which is dubbed as YK Premier Scholars Programme (YKPSP) was introduced in 2014. YKPSP has been designed to develop and build the core leadership competencies (YK3P) of the scholars using the 4-box learning mix approach which are; 1. Formal-Based Learning (FBL), 2. Community-Based Learning (CBL), 3. Self-Directed Learning (SDL) 4. Professional Experience (PE).

YK Dinner is an annual event organ-

ised by Yayasan Khazanah (YK), for

YK Board of Trustees, current scholars

and its Alumni to socialize/network and

update on achievements as well as

welcoming the new scholars into “YK

Family”.

This year was extra special because

YK celebrated its 10th year anniversary

with the launch of our maiden Coffee

Table Book that showcases our

achievements over the last decade.

The book was launched and the dinner

was graced by YAB Dato’ Sri Najib Tun

Razak, Prime Minister of Malaysia. The

dinner was attended by 569 attendees,

amongst others, all our Board of Trus-

tees, current and past YK scholars, as

well representatives from various invit-

ed organisations.

YK Events serve the purpose of Yayasan Khazanah in several folds, namely; engagement, scholar’s development and providing exposure to enhance their leadership skills. Apart from giving the scholars the hands-on experience as well as the knowledge of event management, YK Events also allow the scholars to interact with each other from different scholarship programs, with the YK Team and alternatively getting the scholars to be involved in community service. There were three main events that were held annually.

The YK CR Day is an annual event organised by YK as part of our effort to instil leadership qualities in scholars by giving them the opportunity to run a CR programme that will indirectly help to develop their social leadership skills as well as contribute back to the society. In this year’s particular event, YK has invited 30 orphans, aged between 4 to 17 from Pertubuhan Nur Kasih Bestari to join the programme held at Zoo Negara. The theme for this year was “Keepers of the Wild” which also aims to provide our scholars with the oppor-tunities to create closer bonds and share their experience, knowledge, and interactive learning with the underprivi-leged children as well as to learn the importance of maintaining the planet’s biodiversity, animal protection etc. To show our love for animal, we have also sponsored a Bornean Orang Utan for 1-year period, which covers the food, maintenance, medication and other health related expenses.

One of the important aspects of M&M (Monitoring & Management of scholars) that YK focuses on is engagement. Face-to-face engagement is conducted at least once a year. Throughout the year, the Scholarship Managers continuously communicate with their respective scholars. The medium of communication varies from WhatsApp group, email, Videocon or telephone call. The discussion dur-ing engagement focuses on scholars’ academic performance, co-curricular activities, opportunities as a student in their respective schools or universities as well as their general well-being.

YK Outreach Programme 19

YK Outreach Programme is one of the initiatives by YK to increase the awareness amongst local students and teachers about the opportunities and the available scholarship programmes offered by YK. Last year in 2016, YK visited 18 selected schools nationwide; covering urban, sub-urban, of Peninsular Malaysia. YK Counsellor Programme 2016

Counsellor Programme 2016 for Counsellors from all SBPs and MRSMs was successful held on 13—14th May 2016. The programme aimed to assist the counsellors to identify the “right” students in their schools to go through Yayasan Khazanah scholarship assess-ments. It also strived to equip the counsellors with the related knowledge, skills and understanding on how to provide the students with the environment where potentials and leadership capabilities can be developed and ultimately be able to spot the talents from within.
