Dear Clients,

What a year for the underdog 2016 was, Bulldogs win the AFL, Cronulla Sharks win the NRL, Leicester City win the Premier League and the Chicago Cubs break a 108 year baseball drought by winning the world series, Donald Trump ends up in the white house and probably the biggest one, we cattle producers receive record prices for our livestock.

Closer to home, Claire has completed her HSC and has headed off for 12 months in Austria to be an Au Pair. Leaving home, it was close to 40 degrees and flying into Vienna it was freezing cold with the local’s ice skating on the frozen Danube River. On Claire’s return she will be studying an Agricultural Degree at Melbourne Uni’. We are extremely proud that our daughters Ellen and Claire have decided to pursue a career in Agriculture.

For our stud herd, we were very pleased by our achievements at the 2016 Royal Melbourne Show, Charolais were the feature breed, with over 80 head from 4 states competing. To win 5 classes as well as taking out the Supreme Charolais Exhibit was a very humbling experience. We also offered a lovely Showgirl heifer in the feature sale, who then sold to the Apriash Stud for $9500. The girls took a bit of convincing to let her go, but she has gone to a very good home and will be well looked after. The hard work of Jess, Laura and a friend Chloe was enormous. Showing is not something we consider when breeding our cattle, we focus our efforts on the commercial returns for our clients, but it is nice to have the quality of our stock recognized. We would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate the Victorian Region of the Charolais Society for the effort that was put into making the feature breed show and sale such a great success.

Again this year we have been awarded a 5 star “completeness of performance” from breedplan, one of the very few Charolais herds to achieve this so far. We record data on every possible calf.

Our clients can be assured we use every bit of information available to us to make sure we can offer them a product that is backed by solid data. We do this without sacrificing the ever-important traits of phenotype & temperament.

Structural problems in cattle have a substantial effect on both the reproductive and growth performance of a beef herd. It is widely recognised that structural problems in sires have detrimental effects on conception rates, calving patterns and thus profitability. Similarly, females with inadequate structural characteristics are more prone to weaning lighter calves or conceiving later in the breeding season than their more functional counterparts. These structural problems are filtered through the supply chain resulting in reduced income for the producer, feedlot and thus reducing the overall productivity of the Australian Beef Industry.

Over the past decade, use of the Beef Class Structural Assessment System in the seedstock industry has produced a marked improvement in herds which have shown commitment to using the information appropriately. Through these dedicated breeders, there has been a flow on affect of structural improvement through out all sectors of the beef cattle industry.

Liam Cardile of BEEFXCEL service many of the leading seedstock herds in Australia. BEEFXCEL is not involved in any genetic marketing or specific breeding advice and therefore has no conflict of interests to influence their stock appraisal. The integrity of the structural data provided by BEEFXCEL is recognised throughout the

industry as Liam is a fully INDEPENDENT assessor.

Rangan Charolais STRUCTURAL PROGRAM:The 2017 ‘Rangan Charolais’ Sale Bulls have been independently structurally assessed to maximise the quality of stock on offer. Any animals deemed inadequate have been removed from the sale draft.

Assessment System

The Beef Class Structural Assessment System uses a 1-9 scoring system;

• A score of 5 is ideal. (Note: Temperament Score of 1 is preferable)

• A score of 4 or 6 shows slight variation from ideal, but this includes most animals. An animal scoring 4 or 6 would be acceptable in any breeding program.

• A score of 3 or 7 shows greater variation but would be acceptable in most commercial programs. However, seedstock producers should be vigilant and understand that this score indicates greater variation from ideal.

• A score of 2 or 8 are low scoring animals and should be looked closely before purchasing.

• A score of 1 or 9 should not be catalogued and are considered culls.

Notes: Lachie is easily the softest Charolais bull we have ever bred. A bigger framed bull with a really nice skin type, he has plenty of eye muscle and fat cover and has always weighed heavy. His dam H130 is one of the proven Redemption/C7 combinations who is a full ET sister to the Supreme Charolais Exhibit from last year’s Royal Melbourne Show. Notes: Impressive young sire, sired by the first bull we ever sold to stud in Rangan Gaugin C15, this is Jess’s own bull and she will be very sad to see him go. She has had great success with him around the local shows, with some very good cattle judges commenting on what he has to offer the breed and the industry (one comment by a very experienced cattle man was - “breed improver”). Jess has already had stud semen interest in this bull. Lannister is extremely smooth made, possesses a great skin type, is thick and soft and has a bomb proof temperament, he is a bull with real sire appeal.
