Constitution Amendments – Karl Barclay

At a Special Meeting held on the 23rd March 2017 to discuss the Building Refurbishment –

Peter Wilson proposed a Motion re leasing of Nobbys Surf Club amenities be added to the

Constitution. A letter was given to the President to be taken to the next Executive

Committee meeting

Peter Wilson’s letter re the Proposed Change to Constitution – Use of Club premises

including the Gym, Change rooms and Auditorium Annex (Training Room) by outside

providers. It was agreed by all to take out the Auditorium Annex as this may be hired when

not in use by Nobbys members. After liaising with Club Legal Advisors – the proposed

changes were added to the Constitution amendments for approval at the Nobbys AGM –

Minutes tabled

Further correspondence re the Motion/Amendment for the Constitution was received by

Guy Littler on the 14th June 2017, who agreed with the Motion put forward by Peter Wilson

however would like to have the wording of the proposal changed in line with the Crown

Lands Act – document tabled

Further correspondence was sent out to a group of members regarding the proposed

motion “The Club’s Premises from Guy Littler – this was later withdrawn (correspondence

tabled)

Peter Wilson was asked to speak on his Proposal

The proposal emanated from concerns of renovations to the public amenities and public

dressing sheds

Current plans consist of toilet only facilities for the Public amenities

Had been informed by the Council Lifeguards that members of the public would be able to

use the Nobbys Surf Clubhouse facilities

This would negate any reason to hold membership

Under Section 44. Club Property – The new motion would sit in at sub section (d) to limit any

future committees power to hire the Gym/Change rooms

Onus would be taken off the committee and the need to go to a General Meeting to hire

out the amenities for monetary purposes such as surf schools, School children, Hunter

Branch

Can envisage people contacting council to put pressure on our committee to use our

facilities as councils change as does Club Executive the motion would prevent this from

happening

Guy Litter’s proposal – Null and Void – Guy was asked to respond

Contacted Peter Wilson to consider more appropriate wording of the Motion

Formally emailed Executive about the proposal after seeking the assistance of the Legal

Advisor

Guy discussed what was in his original email

Guy distributed reasons why we should vote against the proposed amendments – later

withdraw

Discussion on Crown Lands Act

Must consider all future hire proposals – and also gave examples

John Boulton: sad about the emerging conflict, the Nobbys working group has worked hard on the

infrastructure of the amenities, there will now be a disabled toilet next to the Patrol Tower

David Byrnes: The use of Surf Clubs by other Surf Clubs is reciprocal and has been for many years

Karl Barclay: We agree that all members are on the same page, the Hall Hire will include use of the

toilet facilities however not the change rooms as these will now be able to be locked off.

Page 10: 2017-2018 SEASON 95TH ANNUAL REPORT … · Office Bearers for the 2018/19 Season will be held Sunday 22nd July 2018 at Nobbys Surf Lifesaving Club – 35 Nobbys Road, Newcastle at

Ronald Cummings: Agree with both Guy Littler and Peter Wilson, the members elect an Executive

to run the day to day business of the Club.

Peter Wilson: We do have a Committee to run the Club, however we need to limit their power to

give away rooms, empowers them to say no, let General meeting decide if the change

rooms/gym can be hired out. The spirit of the motion was to limit our Club to hire out on a

permanent basis.

Members were instructed to vote on the proposed Motion put forward by Peter Wilson:

Vote Yes – 20

Vote No – 21

Abstainers – 3

Proposal will be looked at with the aim to reword the Motion

Robert Brown – Discussion on Trustees

The Trustees section has been updated in line with the old Constitution

Under the Rules of Incorporation if the Club is in the position of winding up - the Club will

have 3 members and the Honorary Legal Advisor appointed for a period of 5 years, ie the

Executive could change during this period

function as a Surf Lifesaving Club or affiliated group, The Trustees of the club shall assume a

custodial role of the club’s financial resources, intellectual, real and personal property in

max.) – If failing to reform within a period of three (3) years, the Club or group shall be

treated as defunct, and its property both real and personal shall (in consultation with the

Clubs Trustees) vest in the HSLS absolutely

to the race and during the race weekend

Brien Taylor

Brien “Butch” Taylor thanked the Executive for the lovely tribute to his wife Cheryl in the

Annual Report

David Byrnes

Asked if there was a timetable for moving back into the refurbished Club House so

members can assist

One will be distributed when available

Kevin Mongan

On distribution of club information – Tossy asked if there was any other way other than via

email and text to receive Club information may be put in the paper

Narelle explained the costs involved of putting just a small advertisement in the Herald,

these are exorbitant, Nobbys SLSC will continue to use Surfguard email and text along with

Facebook and Website, and any important information will be distributed via mail to

members who do not have the technology.

There was no further business. Karl declared the meeting closed and thanked Adamstown United

Sports Club for allowing us to use their Club. Members were asked to stay for light refreshments and

that Registrations would be accepted by the Registrar for the upcoming season.

PRESIDENTS REPORT – Narelle Blick

On behalf of the Executive of Nobbys Surf Life Saving Club, It is my pleasure and privilege to

present this report for the 2017 - 2018 season

Once again, our members have excelled in their aim of serving our community by providing a safe

aquatic environment for all beachgoers. It is a pleasure to report that for another season, there has

been “No Lives Lost” between the flags. This has continued our unbroken record of no lives lost

since our inception in 1923.

A busy season of course means very busy committee members and I would personally like to thank

all of the Board of Directors and their Sub Committees for the time and effort they have put in to

the club this season especially Natasha Ryan who will standing down from the Executive, we

commend her for the amount of work she has put in over the past seasons and wish her well with

her competitive ventures and also to Trevor Brydon who will stepping down from the Executive

however remaining on as Club Registrar, thank you both for your hard work.

The challenge of providing the requisite level of administrative support to service the needs of the

club, the membership and the Executive Committee remains both time consuming and

increasingly complex. Despite the challenges, changes were nevertheless effected to the

constitution, a new liquor licence obtained and the various obligatory requirements by Hunter

Branch, Surf Lifesaving NSW and SLSA were met as were a myriad of reporting and compliance

requirements imposed by a range of legislation. Without a committee the club would not be able

to function and I am always grateful for the support this group of people provides and the work

they do.

Nobbys SLSC successfully completed the Hunter Branch Platinum Club Quality Program, a huge

thank you to Kath Donnelly for assembling the information; this is the benchmark of a Club’s overall

operation. We thank the Hunter Branch for the $4000 contribution for reaching these Compliancy

Standards.

On Friday 12th Jan 2018 Nobbys SLSC held the official Grand Opening of the newly refurbished

Clubhouse. Wade Hammond was an impressive MC and Maurice Webber gave an emotional

speech of Nobbys life throughout his 50+ years of service. The day was well attended by club

members both new and old and Sponsors. Dignitaries Scot MacDonald MLC, Nuatali Nelmes NCC

Lord Mayor, Rhonda Scruton CEO Hunter Surf Life Saving all shared in the honour of the ribbon

cutting. I would like to make special mention to Guy Littler, John Boulton, David Kilby and Karl

Barclay, for your commitment and delivery of our impressive new Clubhouse. I would also like to

thank all our Club members for your patience and tolerance whilst this refurbishment took place.

The inaugural Coates Hire 500 Supercars saw Nobbys transformed into a street circuit, the road

works and loss of parking on the lead up to race day weekend greatly affected our membership

base and recruitment drive. The Super Car weekend was a huge hit with an amazing crowd

attendance of over 190,000 fans over the three days, the Auditorium was hired out to our local

driver Aaron Russell and his Racing Team. I would like to personally thank the 40 members who

gave extraordinary hours of service over the three days cooking BBQs, serving food and drinks and

selling merchandise.

Lifesaving:

Under the guidance of Brad Thomas – Congratulations to all our volunteer Lifesavers who

have completed an outstanding 6200.6 volunteer Patrol Hours - well done, thank you for

your commitment and tireless service to the Community. Our Lifesavers have completed

the following as part of their ongoing commitment to the Community:

o Preventative Actions – 895

o First Aids – 37

o Rescues – 32

o With a total of 13,284 Attendances at the beach this season

o A Breach Free season

Congratulations to Ezekiel Gentle – Patrol Person of the Year

Congratulations to Patrol 3 with Patrol Captain Nathan Black – Patrol of the Year

To all those members who completed 100% Patrol – a huge thank you

Education:

The main purpose of the Nobbys Education and Training Team is to provide members with the

opportunity to improve their knowledge and skills and to gain new awards. It was with sadness that

our member training numbers decreased this season due to extenuating circumstances ie Road

Closures due to Supercars and the Club Refurbishment.

This did not stop Director of Education Kath Donnelly and the Education team who still trained,

assessed and facilitated 801 awards and conducted 378 proficiencies this season. Thank you to the

team for their ongoing commitment and dedication to Nobbys SLSC.

Congratulations to Jenny Parlett – Best Bronze Candidate for 2018

Junior Activities:

Our Nippers under the Leadership of Wade Hammond and the Junior Activities team and the

dedicated Age Managers have had another excellent season in all areas of education,

competition, development and administration, it’s been pleasing to see the number of juniors

advancing through to the senior ranks in patrolling and competition, it shows the future for the club

looks great and is in good hands.

It is always a pleasure to see our youngest members enjoying the beach on Sunday morning and

learning about surf conditions and water awareness, making new friends and enjoying the beach

as part of a structured learning program. A huge thank you to the Water Safety Team competently

led by Jeff Mewes.

I would personally like to thank the parents for continuing to bring the children into the beach

every Sunday with what was very difficult parking situations on the lead up to the supercars

Congratulations to Madeline Sheather and Nicholas Raymond who were nominated for the Hunter

Branch Junior Lifesaver of Year.

Surf Sports:

Competition has played a big part in the development of the Club and its members and a big

thank you goes out to Natasha Ryan and her team, whose commitment and dedication to training

these competitors has been outstanding.

The Club is very proud of our competitor’s efforts and what they have achieved – attending

Branch, State and Australian Carnivals, congratulations to all our members who competed in our

club colours,

Now into their 3rd year, the IRB Racing Team have been training and honing their skills all season in

preparation for the IRB Racing season, they have competed hard during the competition and their

time and dedication is outstanding.

DIRECTOR OF FINANCE REPORT – Anthony Croke

I would to thank the Executive and Sub committees for their help and support throughout the

season. The club has performed sturdily over the preceding 12 months and our revenue with

the help of our sponsors, donors, and fundraising efforts has covered our operating outgoings

with all accounts that have been presented being paid in a timely fashion. The completion of

the club renovations has caused our invested funds to be reduce, nevertheless, as the funds

had always been envisioned for this purpose I see no need for alarm in this matter.

Nobbys army of volunteers raised much need funds from water safety, bicycle directing, and

manning first aid stations. IRB Section held several fundraising events throughout the past year

raising. Once again the 100 Club function was a success.

Thank you to Tai Bawden who has devoted her time and sold club gear at every opportunity

and the empire-building Narelle Blick who has tirelessly opened for Nobbys ‘Sunday Coldies’

every Sunday, with her team of assistants.

With the inaugural Coates Hire 500 Supercars weekend, which was a huge success with an

amazing crowd attendance of over 190,000 fans over the three days saw the Club’s

Auditorium hired out to Aaron Russell and his Racing Team. The 40 members who put in

extraordinary hours of service over the three days cooking BBQs, selling merchandise, serving

food and drinks. Their tireless effort contributed in the club raising over $36,000 on this one

weekend. I would like to personally thank these members.

Thanks to all the members who keep the beaches safe for our families, through there

patrolling efforts.

Thanking you

Anthony Croke

Director of Finance

DIRECTOR OF LIFESAVING REPORT – Brad Thomas

As Club Captain I would firstly like to thank all of our patrolling members for a fantastic effort for the

2017/2018 Patrolling season, your dedication and vigilance over the season has helped to keep our

beach safe over the summer.

This season saw 10 Volunteer patrols with two Reserve Active patrols, once again we had full day

patrols after feedback from members through a monkey survey and also talking to members about

what they would prefer. Once again this meant 7 full day Patrols rather than 14 half days which

worked well last season and again this year. Saturday Patrols were for training, keeping our skills

current and supporting lifeguards on duty. I received good feedback from the Council lifeguards in

regards to our assistance and also seeing patrols out in the water practising their skills.

All patrols had an even amount of Saturdays and Sundays with one public holiday each, this was

due largely to our fantastic Reserve active patrols led by Henry Scruton and Rob Watkins who

plugged up the remaining gaps in the roster, once again you served your club with professionalism

and guidance to those willing to listen and your experience and effort are very much appreciated

by myself and the whole club.

Patrol Logs – This season saw the implementation of the printout patrol logs from Surfguard. These

logs are laid out in a way that makes the job of entering logs much more efficient then using the

hard cover carbon copy books.

I would like to thank Zach Donnelly & Luke Ryan, Zach for preparing the Patrol Survey and entering

our water safety logs, and Luke for assisting to set up the Patrol roster at the start of the year, I could

not have done both tasks without you. I would also like to thank Mick Jago – Gear & Equipment

CoOrdinator who had all of our Patrol gear ready at the start of the season for the Hunter Branch

Gear & Equipment Inspection and entered all details into Surfguard.

I would like to thank the following members for giving up their time to patrol on Christmas day your

service was greatly appreciated.

Robert Houston, Dilan Houston, Dave Martin, Steven Robson, Andrew Griffiths, Sophie

Hartfield, Coco Aislabie, Zac Aislabie, Breanna Blick, Narelle Blick, Elizabeth Brydon,

Trevor Brydon

Congratulations to Ezekiel Gentle for winning Patrol Person of the Year.

Zeke is a valued member of our club with 100% plus

patrolling hours. Zeke has always helped with

fundraising, water safety or anything else he could

offer his services.

Zeke was always willing to volunteer on patrol

whether it was his patrol or filling in on another or

just coming to lend a helping hand.

I consider Zeke to be a future Patrol Captain of the

club and maybe one day club captain or some

other position at the club.

Zeke is now as I understand it the youngest

patrolling member to receive this award which I

think is a great achievement thank you for your

service Zeke and well done.

IRB AND POWER CRAFT REPORT – Luke Ryan

This is the first report I have prepared as the IRB and Power Craft captain and I would like to

thank Stephen “Benno” Bennett for his assistance and guidance throughout the season.

2017/18 has been a busy season with the IRB and power equipment being involved on patrols

Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays, training and water safety for our nippers along with

many special water events held throughout the season.

On the 25th February 2018 our Water Safety

Team saw an early start for the IRBs to set up

the cans for the swim leg of the Sparke

Helmore Triathlon. Assistance for the event

was also provided by Nobbys members on

boards, at drink stations, marshalling and on

the BBQ. The event was a success and a big

thank you for all involved.

On the 15th April, Nobbys members assisted

again for the Newrun Festival undertaking

marshalling at several points on the course

and manning the drink stations.

Members of the club also provided assistance

on the BBQ on the 28th April 2018 at Civic Park

- fundraising for the upcoming Super Car

Event in Newcastle.

Nobbys members have also been involved

with providing IRB’s for water safety for the

Central Venue Assessments at Stockton

throughout the year.

Page 30: 2017-2018 SEASON 95TH ANNUAL REPORT … · Office Bearers for the 2018/19 Season will be held Sunday 22nd July 2018 at Nobbys Surf Lifesaving Club – 35 Nobbys Road, Newcastle at

A huge thank you to the following sponsors which allows the Club to purchase

vital Lifesaving and Rescue equipment and allow our members to show off their rescue skills:

ISP Islington

Specsavers Westfield Kotara

Fuchs Lubricants (Australasia)

Sharkskin.

We have been lucky enough to purchase two new motors through this season which provides

the club with the resources to respond to incidents with confidence in the equipment. We also

have a new IRB on order and are expecting to take delivery of the IRB in October 2018.

I would like to thank the Trainers and Assessors for their time and hard work training up new crew

and drivers for the IRB’s.

I would also like to thank the Nobbys members who have assisted throughout the year, whether

it be through fundraising, assistance in holding events or helping out with bits and pieces.

Without you, these events would not be able to occur.

The end of the patrolling season sees the commencement of the IRB Racing season. The team

has continued to grow since its inception two years ago with a number of new young faces in

the team, it certainly is a pleasure to be involved with this sport.

Congratulations and well done to the IRB Racing Team who have completed 4 rounds of the

SLSNSW Premiership Series conducted at the following venues:

Round 1 - Stockton

Round 2 – The Lakes

Round 3 – Umina - Cancelled

Round 4 - Caves Beach

Well done to the Nobbys IRB Racing Team on their efforts at the Sharkskin SLSNSW IRB

Championships on the 30th June & 1st July 2018 at South West Rocks. The team made an

amazing 11 Semi Finals and 3 finals. Some outstanding racing from our Under 23’s, the future is

looking very bright indeed.

Congratulations to the Nobbys IRB Racing team, a great effort by all who competed at the

Australian IRB Championships at Thirroul on the 15th & 16th July 2018, unfortunately racing was

postponed on the Saturday due to adverse conditions however went ahead on the Sunday

with some very exciting racing. Once again well done Team Nobbys and looking forward to

next year’s racing.

Looking forward to a great season ahead.

FIRST AID REPORT – Henry Scruton The increased patronage at Nobbys Beach has seen an increase in the number of First Aid calls

for assistance, the renewed walking paths and refurbishment of the foreshore has been

responsible for the increase in the public attending not only the beach the break wall and

surrounding parkland and the clubhouse as well.

With the extra people comes extra trips, slips and falls often needing first aid assistance, this is in

addition to our normal calls for first aid within the beach and surf area, some of the extra calls

have been of the serious nature requiring the Ambulance for hospital transport and some are for

band aids to kicked toes on children.

With the increased patronage comes increased responsibility from the surf club to deliver

professional assistance, most of our patrols have qualified First Aiders, however some patrols fall

short of qualified members and to that point can I encourage more members to seek their First

Aid qualifications, there are many providers available however the Hunter Branch offers training

at a reduced rate for club members, remember the person you assist or the life you save may

be someone special to you or a member of the public, the feeling of being able to assist will

remain with you forever.

We have purchased two additional First Aid kits for the club, these are a smaller kit and are

located in the bar and Boatshed, can patrolling members familiarise yourself with the contents

of the kits so as to be able to locate required items quicker in an emergency.

If you do have to use the First Aid kit can you keep a note of the gear used so it can be

replaced ready for the next patrol.

When offering First Aid always remember your own protection and wear gloves, keep records of

all administered assistance along with the causality’s details and those involved.

RADIO REPORT – Henry Scruton

The digital system of communications is still being trialled throughout the Hunter Branch and

appears to offer a better coverage. This new system has given a clearer transmission and

reception for our Lifesavers. The analogue system is still in operation, so the older radios are still

good for use. The club radios will need to be checked for correct frequency and recalibration

this year.

Can all club members be aware when signing on to Surfcom at the beginning of each day

Surfcom only need to know the number of members on patrol, if the IRB is operational, is the

beach open or closed. When we have a new patrol in the afternoon they do not need to sign in

unless they do not have the correct patrol strengths, or the beach is closed during the patrol. If

using the Patrol App to sign on, Surfcom still require a radio check during sign on in the morning.

When signing off, Surfcom only need to know the number of rescues if any have been

performed during the day. We still need to sign off at the completion of Patrol – 5.00pm.

New Radio bags have been purchased and placed in operation. Please ensure all radios are in

the protective bags prior to leaving the clubhouse and check that each radio is signed out and

signed back in at the end of patrol.

Please maintain radios and keep sand/salt water away. If dropped please clean sand and

saltwater off radios before returning to charger and notify Club Radio Officer of the radios

number and condition asap. Ensure radios are placed on charger when patrol is completed. Be

aware that Surfcom is now operating full time every day, so when training on the water out of

season log onto Surfcom and make them aware you are training, your resources and location

and please sign off when finished.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT REPORT – Elizabeth Brydon

Our Youth have had another successful season with many activities for our young members. This

season saw another increase in our youth members with 25 Rookie Cadets aged 13 to 15 years

however with many members turning 18 (these members have moved through to the Senior

ranks) this season our Cadets aged 15 to 18 years were down to 34 all of whom have engaged

in many different activities throughout the year.

Members attended carnivals with

great results, many assisted with water

safety activities at events hosted by

Nobbys SLSC including marshalling for

fun runs and education for weekend

nippers, and also the Supercars

Weekend.

Special mention to the water safety

team who do an outstanding job, I

believe this valuable experience the

water safety provide has played a part

in preventing many anxious moments

in the surf for our little ones.

The regular team of Nobbys water safety is mainly filled by our clubs youth. It is pleasing to see

the kids wanting to help the younger ones once they have achieved their SRC or Bronze and

put back into the Nippers program. I hope this will continue for many more years.

In February our Youth members travelled to North Bondi Surf Lifesaving Club as part of an

exchange program. The group had a great time walking around to the famous Bondi Lifeguard

Tower and around to Tamara SLSC to meet their idol Maxi. We thank all our volunteers who

assisted with this trip.

Congratulations to Madeline Sheather and Nicholas Raymond our 2017/18 Junior Nipper

Captains who were also our Hunter Branch Junior Lifesaver of the Year Nominees. Maddy and

Nicholas also attended the Hunter Branch Youth Development Camp – learning new skills to

assist them in their roles at Nobbys SLSC.

Thanking you

Lizzie Brydon

DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION REPORT – Kath Donnelly

It is my pleasure to present the Nobbys Education Team report for the 2017/18 Season. The main

purpose of the Nobbys Education and Training Team is to provide members with the opportunity

to improve their knowledge and skills and to gain new awards. It is through a group of highly

dedicated trainers and assessors that this objective is fulfilled. Their experience and skills are

recognised throughout the Hunter Branch and the team has a reputation of maintaining very

high standards.

I would like to thank our Trainers who have volunteered many hours conducting the following

courses: Bronze Medallion, SRC, ARTAID, Radio Operators, SMAR, SMBM & Night Operations –

Henry Scruton, Kath Donnelly, Nathan Black, Zachary Donnelly, Trevor Brydon, Elizabeth Brydon,

Coco Aislabie and Trevor Marshall.

This season saw an exceptional group of IRB Trainers who worked together to conduct not only

IRB Driver and Crew courses but many upskilling sessions for our very enthusiastic members,

many of who went on to join the IRB Racing Team. Thank you to Allan Gordon, Stephen Bennett,

Robert Houston, Brad Thomas, and Dilan Houston who have passed on their skills and knowledge

which has strengthened our Patrols.

It is an ongoing aim of our team to continuously train new training officers and assessors and

improve their skills and expertise. As Chief Training Officer, I was pleased to see our new training

officers and assessors mentored and encouraged throughout the season. Congratulations to

Grace Rinkin, Amy Phillips and Wade Hammond who have attended a Training Officer Course

at the Hunter Branch, we look forward to these members joining our Team.

Thank you also to Linda Miles for her First Aid training.

This year saw a hectic start to the season, with many hurdles to get through including finding

venues for training due to the Club Refurbishment, Road Closures due to the road works for the

Supercars event and adding to the disappointment was the overall numbers of members

participating in training obviously due to many adverse factors. This however did not stop our

trainers and assessors who all participated in Re-endorsements and upgrades run by SLSNSW

and the Hunter Branch to revise competency requirements. I participated in the SLSNSW

Webinar to ensure we were well prepared for the upcoming season. We have also been

notified that our Facilitators will be required to update their Cert IV in Training and Assessing (LLN

Units) this will be run by SLSNSW.

With the Surf Club not completed

for the beginning of the 2017/18

season, we started Patrolling from

the Boat Sheds, proficiencies

proved quite difficult however we

managed to get all our patrolling

members through their skills

maintenance and requalified, all

members were updated and

entered onto Surfguard.

All Junior Preliminary Evaluations

and Competition Skills were

conducted in a timely manner,

thank you to Skills Maintenance

Officers Wade Hammond, Natasha

Ryan, Andrew Pitkin, Kathryn

Newton and Assessors Robert and

Dilan Houston for their assistance.

Page 35: 2017-2018 SEASON 95TH ANNUAL REPORT … · Office Bearers for the 2018/19 Season will be held Sunday 22nd July 2018 at Nobbys Surf Lifesaving Club – 35 Nobbys Road, Newcastle at

Changes were made to the In-Depth Proficiency process for the Bronze Medallion and Cert II in

Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue). Any returning members who require the upgrade will need to

follow the In-Depth Proficiency process. Any Bronze Medallion member who is patrolling

(rostered or voluntary) or assisting with Water Safety must hold the Cert II.

This season we were required by SLSNSW to complete a self-assessment of our Education

processes and Education Team using the Educheck tool in order to meet minimum RTO

compliance requirements. The Nobbys Education team conducted a meeting to complete the

Educheck which was then submitted via a Survey Monkey link to SLSNSW. This will assist the club

with greater sustainability and plan Club Education goals. This was also a requirement for the

Hunter Branch Platinum Quality Club Program – Section 9.9.

As part of our ongoing commitment to Member Protection, members of the Education Team

attended the “Not on my Watch” Seminar at the Hunter Branch. The Bronze/SRC Member

Information Handbook and the Code of Conduct for training will be updated. Further

information to follow after attendance at the SLSNSW State Conference.

SURF RESCUE CERTIFICATE - This season 12 candidates successfully achieved their SRC and are

now valuable patrolling members. This training was completed by Zach Donnelly with support

from Nathan Black, Trevor & Lizzie Brydon, Trevor Marshall and myself. This season saw us trial

sessions scheduled in the School Holidays which were well attended and definitely improved the

board paddling skills of these young individuals.

We are looking forward to having these new Lifesavers join us in next season’s Bronze courses.

Thank you to all those members who assisted with Training, Water Safety and IRB driving for our

member training, your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Community Project: On the 25th October 2017 I travelled to the Island of Mare and met the

local Yedjele Wabao Lifeguards. They had just received a new Rescue Board, and were very

excited as the only board they had been using was an old Nipper foamie. They had also

received an Oxy Viva and Defibrillator and made comment that they would love to have Red &

Yellow uniforms to match the board. I made a promise that on my next visit to the Island I

would bring Patrol uniforms and a Rescue Tube.

We travelled again to Mare in April 2018 where we met up with the local Lifeguards again and

donated 8 sets of Patrol Shirts and Shorts, a Rescue Tube and a Bronze Training Manual.

They were extremely grateful to Nobbys SLSC for their gifts and Jarrod had fun training them in

the use of the Rescue Tube. Next trip I have promised Patrol Rashies.

Congratulations to Allan Gordon – Nobbys SLSC Trainer of the Year nominee at the Hunter

Branch Awards of Excellence. Allan’s excellence in IRB Training is to be commended.

John Pearson Award for Outstanding Bronze Candidate – John Pearson was an outstanding surf

and belt swimmer, and R&R competitor, John was equally, an outstanding trainer for his club in

part because he felt that training was the basis of success and attitude towards Patrolling

responsibilities as lifesavers first, then as club members.

Sadly John suffered a fatal heart attack while swimming at Newcastle baths. John’s memory will

continue on with the presentation of the John Pearson Award which this year goes to a very

deserving winner – Jenny Parlett.

Jenny gained her Bronze Medallion on the 18th

November 2017, she completed the Dry

Assessment however was unable to attend the

Wet Assessment – due to the nature of

assessments now there was not another CVA for

another month.

Jenny continued her Bronze Training every

Sunday and any other chance she had to

improve her skills – even attending the early

morning sessions with the Masters training group

on Saturdays. Jenny passed her Wet Assessment

with flying colours and was placed on Patrol 8

and her skills have been invaluable.

Jenny decided to continue her Masters training

and attended her first carnival competing with

success. Congratulations Jenny and thank you

for your commitment to not only your training

but your Patrolling and representing Nobbys as

a great Team representative

Congratulations to all award recipients throughout the past season, well done.

DIRECTOR OF SURF SPORTS REPORT – Natasha Ryan

Nobbys SLSC Surf Sports would firstly like to thank the Hunter Surf Lifesaving who, with their long list

of volunteers have put on great carnivals this year, arriving early to set up the beach for all the

events and then pack up the beach, organise the tally of results and send out all the information

prior to carnivals. We would also like to thank our sponsors for providing gazebos that provide

valuable shade and protection from rain during surf sports events and carnivals.

This year Nobbys SLSC has been involved in many aspects of surf sports within the Branch and has

offered regular training sessions for members. I would like to thank the team of dedicated people

at Nobbys who assist me in delivering training. To fulfil the requirements for coaching Warren Smith

and I hold SLS development surf coaching for boards. I have also held board training for juniors on

Wednesday afternoons. I would like to thank board trainers Dave Kilby and Warren Smith whose

knowledge of Nobbys surf, board and surf skills has improved the juniors competence and

confidence in the surf.

This year I handed over Junior Carnival Manager to Andrew Pitkin and I would like to thank him for

doing a great job.

We are continuing to run ‘Sizzling Saturday Seniors’ each Saturday morning which is continuing

throughout winter. We have a crew of up to ten over 18’s training on boards, surf swimming,

running and have started some ski paddling, with a couple of members already paddling three

mornings a week in training for next season . This has been a great team building exercise and

has improved our fitness and surf skills. Anyone over 18 is welcome to join in, but you must have a

sense of humour.

Jacqueline Doran, Mark Honnery, Natasha Ryan, Penny Hunter, Kesley Kernes and Jordan Spencer

I would like to thank Dave Kilby, Matt Shearer, Mark Honnery and Jill Hartfield for helping me

make repairs to boards and ski.

Unfortunately Teejay, Riley and Ben all had to take some time off due to injury, but once able,

showed Great Spirit in competing despite time out of the water. Special mention to Jasmin

Thomas for her performance on the sand at Branch and State. Cohen Bunn also showed great

speed in his first year of competing, winning some early events. A number of competitors this

year showed great courage as they participated in conditions that where at times tricky and

challenging. Most importantly all competitors throughout the season continued to give

maximum effort regardless of placing.

A huge thankyou to the members who supported the kids at training, Natasha Ryan, Dave Kilby

and Warren Smith. Another huge thank you to the parents who made themselves available to

do water safety, especially Tracey Shearer, and the officials, Amy Walton, Julia Stroud - Watts,

Brad Thomas and Natasha Ryan.

The most pleasing aspect of this year was the support each competitor gave to one another.

Each race had a number of parents and kids cheering on. The fact that each competitor

showed progression in their skills & confidence over the course of the year demonstrates that the

season was a successful one.

DIRECTOR OF JUNIOR ACTIVITIES REPORT – Wade Hammond Nippers is where it all begins for our life savers of the future. Our mission is to educate and train

our Nippers in a fun environment so that they develop skills and confidence.

Participation

The construction and running of the Supercars event no doubt had an impact on our Nippers

enrolments this season. Numbers were slightly lower than in previous seasons with an 82%

retention rate overall. With the worst of the construction on the Foreshore now behind us we will

look to attract additional members in the coming season.

Coaching & Development

In addition to the instruction provided by our Age

Managers on a weekly basis our Nippers have access

to specialist coaching.

Former Council Lifeguard Warren Smith continues to

assist with the board training of our juniors. Warren

does a wonderful job in developing the kids’

confidence in an area which is usually the most

challenging for many Nippers. Warren focused on still

water training at Horseshoe Beach early in the season,

and between this and the work he did with our

competitors there was a noticeable improvement in

our junior board paddling capabilities.

The weekend before the Supercars event we took the opportunity to run a modified Nippers at

Lambton Pool. It was a great day with a combination of games, rescue skills and education. A

special thanks to Kath Donnelly for showing our kids the finer points of CPR on the mannequins.

Competition

Please refer to our Director of Surf Sports report for the details of competition participation and

results. Thanks in particular to Natasha Ryan for enabling both training and participation for our

junior members who represent our Club at carnival events.

Age Champions

Nippers is all about participation, but it is important that our kids learn about competition and so

we hold our annual Junior Club Championships.

Our age championships were a points based competition held across two separate days.

Congratulations to all our Age Champions listed. Thanks also to our Club Officials who assisted

on both days.

Events

From a humble beginning in 2015 our 2017 Nippers Twilight New Year’s Eve function was a huge

success. In excess of 100 tickets were sold and our kids enjoyed fun events on the beach whilst

the young-at-heart enjoyed a meal in the club house. Thanks to all those that made the night

possible – and we look forward to a bigger and better event in our new club house this NYE.

Thanks to our many, many helpers

Our junior activities program requires the support and assistance of many people in the club.

First and foremost I want to acknowledge and thank our Age Managers for their support and

assistance over the season. They give their Sunday mornings to wrangle a diverse group of

children in an environment that is full of distractions. Their dedication and patience is highly

valued.

A special mention to Jeff Mewes and the water safety team. We have a responsibility to keep

our Nippers safe in the water, and challenge the kids to develop new skills and in some cases

overcome fears about the surf.

We thank the Hunter Branch and Newcastle Permanent for the Age Manager and Rash Shirts

Our water safety volunteers spend hours in the water ensuring we deliver on our commitment to

keep our kids safe. Thanks to the many volunteers who have given their time in this way.

To all those who gave of their time – thank you. Whether you flipped a sausage on the BBQ, ran

the IRB out to drop the cans, stood in the surf so that the under 7’s could run around you, took

some time to explain how a radio works, or helped to pack up and wash down the trailer, your

contribution is appreciated as Nippers wouldn’t happen without you.

Looking toward 2017-18

The coming season will present both challenges and opportunity. There is much excitement

around the Supercars and other events on the Newcastle Foreshore and these will no doubt

present opportunities to show case our Club and raise funds for the future. There will also be

logistical challenges for our members accessing the beach for our Sunday Nippers program

which will need to be addressed. It will no doubt be another exciting season for our Juniors and I

look forward to seeing our returning members and lots of new faces on the beach this year.

Thanking you

Wade Hammond

DIRECTOR OF CLUB SERVICES REPORT – Karl Barclay

The 2017/18 season has been another very busy season for all on the Executive and

Management Committee.

While we are now starting to get settled into the new building, there are still a lot of issues that

need to be tended too.

The keys/wristbands are one of the problems being dealt with as we have run out of the

wristbands which after receiving from the supplier have found out that they are not water proof

so we not keen to order more until the water proofing issue with them is sorted out.

Trials have been underway with some of the bands which have been sealed, (with a simple

application of silastic) which seems to work ok, however for how long is unknown. This system has

cost the club a lot of money and we believe we should have been provided with a better, fit for

purpose solution.

The Supercars have come and gone with an exhausting weekend with many volunteers assisting

over the weekend. The 2017 event was a great revenue source for the club and we are hoping

for similar results this year, with a lot less confusion. It was a massive effort by all the volunteers

who gave up their time, with everyone working their butts off. Plans are currently underway for

this year’s event on the 23rd, 24th and 25th November 2018.

The Groper bar is now back trading on Sunday afternoons, which I must give a huge thanks to

the four Amazing Ladies who regularly give up their Sundays to come and man the Bar, all your

hard work is greatly appreciated. So thanks to Narelle Blick, Kath Donnelly, Penny Brydon and

who can forget Narelle’s mum Izzy.

The Club is starting to take bookings for future functions, with the diary filling up quickly.

We hope to see all our members up there soon.

Thanking you

Karl Barclay

HOUSE AND BUILDING COMMITTEE - Pavilion Refurbishment

Background: In April 2016 Nobbys SLC was awarded a grant from Newcastle Port Community

Fund of $500,000 for a major refurbishment of the Nobbys Pavilion with an approximate project

value of $1 million. The $500,000 from the Port grant was awarded to the Club based on a

matched contribution from Newcastle City Council (NCC) and Nobbys ($250,000 each) with the

latter subject to ratification by a vote of Nobbys members.

At a special meeting of the Club on 21 June 2016, members showed unanimous support for the

project and approval was given to contribute $250,000 of Club funds towards the project.

Following approval for the project, design ideas were invited from members and a series of

workshops held to embellish the plans and the idea to alter the layout by positioning the kitchen-

bar area to the western end of the Pavilion was hatched. Following this process and in

consultation with NCC various options were presented to members at a special meeting of the

Club on 22 August 2016. At this meeting there was a unanimous decision to proceed with the

design which moved the bar and kitchen to the western end of the building and the amenities

and gym to the eastern end. At this meeting, it was also explained to members that this option

would come with an increase in costs.

In late February 2017, the project was advertised for Tender by NCC. Tenders closed on 14 March

and were assessed by a NCC panel. Three shortlisted builders were put forward to Nobbys House

and Building Committee for consideration by the Club. At a special meeting of the Club on 22

March 2017 the choice of builder was ratified, and agreement was sought for the Club to

contribute additional funds towards the project after discussion as to the advantages and

disadvantages of various levels of finish. A vote then followed with a strong preference to

complete all the work at one time, with least disruption to the Club’s activities. An additional

amount of $220,000 was approved, increasing Nobbys approval to $470,000 with a total

contribution towards the project to $469,677. The meeting was advised that the project budget

contained a contingency and it had been negotiated with Council that any unspent monies

would to be returned to Nobbys. We are pleased to advise that an amount of $52,698 has been

returned to Nobbys from the contingency reducing our contribution to $416,979.

As advised in last year’s report Club Projects Newcastle Pty Ltd was awarded the Contract by

NCC in early April 2017. Construction works were carried out during the winter period with

practical completion occurring on the 6 October 2017. We note that there were some defects,

many of which have been resolved and that the Club Executive and the Committee is working

with NCC and the builders to rectify any remaining issues. The defects period under the Contract

is for 12 months.

In addition to the funding arrangements discussed above we are delighted to advise that we

were successful in gaining a further grant from NCC for an amount of $119,685. This will allow us to

properly fit out the refurbished Club premises. Included in the list is new furniture, office

equipment, kitchen/bar fittings and equipment, curtains, upgrades to honour boards, picture

framing, CCTV and additional security measures.

We are grateful to Newcastle Port Corporation and Newcastle City Council for their generous

financial support towards the project and acknowledge the contribution from Sparke Helmore

Solicitors, Club Executive Committee and many members who have contributed to the success of

the project.

NB: All amounts expressed in the above report are exclusive of GST and expressed in whole dollars.

Thanking you

Guy Littler & John Boulton,

On behalf of the Building Committee

NOBBYS SLSC GYM REPORT – Dave Edwards

The past twelve months have been extremely busy for the Gym. With major renovations to the club

house taking place the gym had to find a temporary home. After much contemplation, the

boatshed (The Dungeon) was the ideal place.

After a lot of lifting and groaning, the gym had found itself a new home for the next six months with

a new outlook and a slightly smaller space. Many of our regulars adapted well to the change and

when it was time to return to the newly renovated club, some members found it hard to leave the

“Dungeon”.

I wish to thank all the members who helped to move the weight equipment and machines to and

from the boatshed during the club renovations, it was a “Herculean” task.

The next twelve months will see further changes to the gym. Some of our weight machines are up

for repair or replacement. These weight machines are very old and of single use. Our wish is to

replace them with new multi station machines. Further information on this matter will be placed on

the whiteboard in the gym in the near future.

The Gym in our Club is an important section for our members both young and more mature for their

physical and mental health. This enables members to keep fit for competition, patrol and a healthy

lifestyle.

Again, thank you to all the members who assisted in moving the gym to and from the boatshed. A

special thanks must also to the members of the gym committee.

Thanking you

Dave Edwards

COMMUNITY INCLUSION REPORT – Narelle Blick

Nobbys SLSC is proud to be involved with many programs and opportunities for members of our

community with a disability or special needs.

These programs have given members a “perspective” on life and I believe many people have

greatly benefited from the programs and to know there are such wonderful people inside our Club

that Volunteer and donate their time to assist these programs is nothing short of heart-warming.

Inclusion is an attitude. It is about being a Club where everyone feels welcome and valued. This

starts from when a new member comes into contact with the club for the first time through to our

members who actively participate in club activities.

As a society we should all view a disability as just an expected part of human diversity and

accommodate it accordingly. This will result in a truly inclusive environment for people with a

disability that empowers them to participate in society and all that it offers to the same extent as

people without a disability.

Nobbys SLSC is committed to providing greater access and opportunities for people with disabilities

to engage in surf lifesaving so that every child and family can enjoy the benefits of being a part of

the Nobbys surf lifesaving community.

I am very proud to be associated with Nobbys SLSC in bringing inclusion into our Surf Club.

Once again our Beach and Water Wheelchairs have been used on a regular basis and the many

participants loving the experience of getting their feet wet, some for the very first time.

Our Buddy Swim Program has also proved popular this season, if you would like to participate in this

program – please contact Nobbys SLSC.

On the 5th May 2018 the Ossur Amputee Surf Day was conducted at Nobbys beach. This gave the

members of the community with a Disability the opportunity to learn the art of surfing. It was a

beautiful sunny day with perfect wave conditions for amputees of all ages and surfing abilities to

come together and take part in a free surfing lesson with Newcastle Surf School.

Nobbys beach was also host to the Surfing for Autism – Saturday 24th March 2018
