2018 is an exciting year for the Young Women’s Resource Center as it marks the 40th anniversary since Louise Noun and her contemporaries firstestablished the organization to fill a critical need in our

A common theme has presented itself this past year through the feedback we’ve received from our clients, stakeholders and staff: the world continues to become a more difficult

community. Since the start, the mission of the YWRC to embrace and inspire girls and young women to become strong, self-confident, and successful has not waivered.

Over the last 40 years, the YWRC has provided services to more than 30,000 young women in our community, providing measurable outcomes in their lives and across Central Iowa.

To recognize 40 years of truly making a difference, the YWRC planned an event for each month in 2018 to help raise awareness of ongoing community needs, how the YWRC is uniquely positioned to meet those needs and how we leverage key partners in the community. More than 1,480 community members attended the first six events of 2018. It is my hope that you will have attended several of these unique events by the end of 2018, helping us to reflect on where we’ve been, where we are now, and where we may be in the next 40 years. These events provide an opportunity to see firsthand what a difference the YWRC is making in our community.

Thank you for all the tremendous support so many of you have provided throughout the last 40 years. We could not be successful without all the support we get from community members like you who provide time, talent and treasure in support of the mission of the YWRC.

place for girls and young women to navigate. In the last 12 months, girls and young women have shared concerns about feeling like their rights are under attack, their discouragement on continued pay inequity, and ongoing safety risks including sexual assault and abuse.

In consideration of this cultural background, we have spent the past year focusing on three major initiatives to provide opportunities to counteract negative experiences and create lasting, positive impact: cutting edge trauma and resiliency work, a new Advocacy Committee and our 40th Anniversary celebration.

The YWRC continues work towards becoming a Trauma Informed Care organization that truly understands the impact of trauma on the girls and young women we serve. This includes the recent development of a new tool to measure changes in resiliency. While we cannot undo trauma clients experience, we can help them overcome associated negative impacts by building resiliency skills. We regularly measure client resiliency changes and use that data to drive programming improvements.

It has been a remarkable anniversary year, made possible by the hard work and passion of our dedicated staff, board, volunteers and extraordinary clients. Thank you for your continued support and belief in our mission.

*We define ‘girls and young women’ as any persons who have been socialized and/or identifies as female.

• Family death/serious illness • Emotional, physical or sexual abuse• Lack of food/clothing/shelter

WHAT ARE YOUTH TRAUMAS/ACEs?Situations experienced in youth that are overwhelming and/or threatening. Including:

• Family mental illness• Family substance abuse• Family deportation, separation or divorce

RESILIENCY: the ability to thrive, adapt and cope despite difficult times

Building the four resiliency skills listed above positively impacts participants’ lives now and in the future.

Connections & Strong Social Networks

Coping & Self-Control

Competency & Sense of Purpose

Confidence & Self-Esteem

There is a direct correlation between trauma and later-in-life physical health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, depression and substance abuse. While this can seem daunting, the good news is that we know building resiliency and protective factors lessens or reverses these negative effects so our participants can have healthier, brighter futures.

WHY WE FOCUS ON RESILIENCY:

YWRC PARTICIPANT YOUTH TRAUMAS/ACEs EXPERIENCE DATA:

The YWRC measures baselines and changes in client resiliency to inform decisions on how we can best equip participants with these crucial skills through progam development, content and delivery.

HOW WE MEASURE OUTCOMES:

of participants showed improvement in the Confidence & Self-Esteem resiliency skill, including the ability to identify personal strengths, reframe negative experiences and acceptance of self. 43%

The Young Women’s Resource Center (YWRC) is a nonprofit organization that supports, educates and advocates for girls and young women ages 10-21 in the Greater Des Moines area. We offer small groups and

individual support focused on self-esteem, healthy relationships and reproductive health. Young Moms receive additional support focused on parenting skills and understanding the importance of education.

Founded in 1978 by Louise Noun and community activists, the YWRC meets girls and young women where they are and empowers them to discover their abilities and pursue their goals.

The YWRC believes that EVERY girl and young woman is vulnerable at different points in her development and that EVERY girl and young woman deserves a life of possibilities.
