2016 Summer Camp Guide

RCC Fee Waiver Program:Reston Community Center provides fee waivers to help eligible residents and employees of Small District 5 participate in RCC programs.

This program provides financial assistance to low-income families receiving public assistance or meeting our income requirements. Completed forms are confidential and will be kept on file for one year. If your family is eligible, a fee waiver account for each family

member under age 18 will be created, and may be used for any combination of RCC summer camp programs. A $10 fee is required per week of camp and for each camp registered. The fee is also required for each week of Zen Zone Programs.

We are very excited to announce our 2016 summer camp season!

At RCC, our programming staff is constantly monitoring enrollment

and demand. We saw the camps you wanted last summer so this

year we have added in more sessions of our top-rated camps,

including: Rock Climbing, Adventures in Movie Making, Tech Savvy

Girls and Paintball. If you have a Boy Scout or Girl Scout in your

home who wants to earn badges, we have developed specialty

camps to meet this need. Science and technology programming

continues to be the rage and we have included several new offerings ranging from

Minecraft-inspired Lego camps to a full-fledged STEAM camp led by a talented FCPS

teacher whose elementary school was recently named one of only ten “Green Schools”

in the nation! We have also extended the summer camp season to help bridge the gap

between August and the start of school. Check out our new Fun Fusion camp that is

designed as a traditional camp program with a variety of fun and enriching activities for

elementary-age children.

Our full day camp options include Young Actors Theatre (YAT), Lake Anne Art Rave for

Kids (LARK), Camp Goodtimes and Road Rulz. Nearly 70 sessions of specialty camps are

scheduled mornings from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. and afternoons from 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Select both a morning and afternoon specialty camp and turn the week into a full-day camp

for your child. Simply pack a lunch and our terrific staff will chaperone campers during the

one-hour lunch break and engage them in fun pursuits, games and conversation. Our goal

is to provide happy and rewarding creative learning and social experiences for your child.

Camp Goodtimes On The Road The Camp Goodtimes Camper Handbook will be available after February 1. Parents/guardians are strongly encouraged to read it with their campers as it contains useful information. Camp newsletters are distributed each Monday and contain news and field trip information. PARENTS MUST COMPLETE AND SUBMIT A CAMP FORMS PACKET (available at www.restoncommunitycenter.com) BEFORE MAY 15.

Ages: Parents must register children by age group, determined by the date of birth as of the first day of camp. The Camp Administrator reserves the right to assign campers to other camp age groups depending on maturity level. Proof of age may be requested.

Hours: 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. (Zen Zone – an aftercare program – will be available at RCC Hunters Woods until 5:00 p.m. for a nominal, additional fee).

Location: Parents must check in campers at Reston Community Center Hunters Woods each day at 9:00 a.m. and must pick up campers by 4:00 p.m., unless they are registered to participate in Zen Zone (for pick-up by 5:00 p.m.).

Lunch/Snacks: Parents must pack a bag lunch and drink for their child(ren) each day as well as one mid-morning and mid-afternoon snack, and a filled water bottle. Please do not pack items that require refrigeration as there is no refrigerated storage available.

Camper Gear: Campers must wear their camp t-shirt, rubber wristband (which will be provided on the first day of camp), and carry a backpack that supports their bag lunch as well as a change of clothes. Campers are also welcome to bring a book to read on the bus. No small electronics, please. We are not responsible for lost or stolen items.

Camp Sessions: Camp is organized in five one-week sessions. Each weekly session will feature a balance of enriching, educational, and fun-filled field trips. Campers will typically swim on Fridays, and must arrive at camp wearing their swimsuits. Please pack a large plastic bag for wet items, towels, goggles, and hats, and ensure that sunscreen has been applied prior to camp arrival. Flip-flops are permitted on swim days only. There may be occasions when field trip destinations are farther away and require an earlier sign-in and later pick-up. Parents will be notified of any time changes well in advance. Parents must be prompt in signing in campers and picking them up each day. Please be aware that on rare occasions, or due to inclement weather, the Camp Administrator reserves the right to adjust or change field trip destinations.

Camp Goodtimes On The Road (7 – 11 years old) This camp will treat campers to a full-day field trip – generally within the Washington, DC/Baltimore/Richmond metropolitan areas – every day of the week. Campers will be closely supervised by camp staff and will have the opportunity to engage in many enriching experiences over the summer. Campers are asked to wear comfortable clothes and closed-toed shoes (no sandals, heelie-wheelies, or Crocs), apply sunscreen prior to coming to camp each day, and bring a lunch, mid-morning and mid-afternoon snack, as well as a filled water bottle. Camp fee includes two t-shirts, field trip transportation, and all venue admissions.

Zen Zone: Late Pick-Up Policy & Fees

Campers must be picked up promptly at the end of the Zen

Zone aftercare program. If a child is not picked up on time, a per-child late fee of $5.00 for every 15 minutes will be

assessed. Payment is due upon pickup and must be paid at

the RCC customer service desk before leaving. If a child is not picked up within 15 minutes of the end of the program,

parents/guardians will be called. If they cannot be contacted, emergency contacts will be called. If contact cannot be

made with parents, guardians or emergency contacts within 30 minutes of the scheduled pickup time, RCC staff will

notify the proper authorities.

Road Rulz (12 – 16 years old)Get ready for a fantastic summer of Road Rulz adventure camp. Participants will travel and engage in new and exciting activities each day. Imaginations will soar, new skills will be learned, and tons of fun memories will be created. This camp is designed specifically for middle and high school students who are motivated to meet the challenges and embrace the journey.

Cake Creations (7 – 9 years old)Campers will use a variety of tips and tricks that will delight and amaze family and friends in the art of cake design and decoration. Each day participants will create something fun and new while they learn a unique decorating technique to help their creations come to life. At the end of the week, campers will have the opportunity to design their own masterpiece from the techniques learned in class. This is an opportunity to learn the basics of woodworking while making unique projects to take home at the end of camp. Easy Beading (6 – 9 years old)Campers will take home a simple project made with beads and learn knotting, memory wire beading, and basic wiring techniques. Participants will learn color, size, pattern, texture, and coordination with beading tools. Make gifts for friends, family, or yourself. Plan on a “shopping day” on Thursday to gather beading material in-house by choosing colored beads, and finding charms to create a project based on what is learned in the first three days. On the final day, get ready for “show time.” Campers will show off their hand-made project, while parents are welcome to come and take photos.

New Skills and Thrills (6 – 11 years old)Each day campers will learn something new, and will spend time in the kitchen cooking, baking, making chocolates, or molding soap. Participants will design, create and finish a 5”x 5” glass mosaic project, as well as to learn to bead and tie traditional knots for parachute cord bracelets. Finally, campers will learn the basics of stick weaving. Each day will be fun and exciting with an opportunity to learn a new skill.

Origami (8 – 11 years old)Learn basic paper folding skills and some of the special creative techniques of Origami. Trendy Jewelry Making (9 – 12 years old)Campers will let their imaginations soar as they create bracelets, necklaces, earrings, key chains, and more that will be the envy of their friends. Learn how to use jewelers’ tools to make one-of-a-kind, cool jewelry pieces. Campers will learn how to correctly and safely use tools; how to make jump rings to connect the main components of the piece; how to make a clasp to hold a bracelet or necklace together; and how to make ear wires for earrings. By the end of the program, campers should be able to create up to five pieces of original, custom jewelry that is suitable for boys and girls.

3D Designing with SketchUp Make (9 – 12 years old)Campers will use a program called SketchUp Make to design a variety of 3D models. SketchUp Make enables campers to visualize geometry and other math concepts while designing full scale 3D models of houses, buildings, cars, and much more, including but not limited to, virtual environments. Campers will show off their imagination and creativity as they build their way toward designing freedom. The morning session is for campers ages 9 –10 years old; the afternoon session is for campers ages 11–12 years old.

Adventures in Movie Making (8 – 12 years old)Campers will learn the shooting and editing techniques used by industry professionals, while they make a professional-quality digital movie and create incredible Hollywood-style animations, transitions and effects, including green screen for advanced effects. Chess (8 – 12 years old)Chess has been a popular game for centuries, and people enjoy it to learn strategy, discipline, and to satisfy a competitive spirit. Chess can be considered aerobics for the brain. The curriculum will include beginner to advanced strategies, alternate solutions, how to build on the foundation of play, and development of logical skills. A tournament will be held on the last day with prizes awarded to all participants.

Community Service (6 – 9 years old)Campers will have the opportunity to give back to the community and work together on community service projects during the summer. Activities will include collecting and preparing food for donation to a local food bank, creating toys for needy children, tending a local garden, and assisting staff at a local, non-profit thrift shop where they will prepare a project that will be displayed in the window. Campers must bring a water bottle each day and wear closed-toe shoes along with appropriate clothing for painting, planting, and food preparation. Campers will meet in a different location each day.

Computer (9 – 13 years old)Campers will learn, hands-on, the inner workings of a personal computer – identifying and replacing hardware components; using the binary number system, and personalizing the current Windows OS. Participants will learn to safely operate internet browsers and various search tools, and use them on age-relevant web scavenger hunts. Campers will learn the basics of MS Office components (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher), and use those tools to create and update a daily journal and slide presentation. They will also be introduced to basic CGI animation and use those tools to compete in a best-of-class cartoon contest.

Eureka! Invention Camp (6 – 11 years old)This camp is designed by campers – the inventors. Campers will be given a series of challenges which must be overcome using basic materials, simple machines, tips from world-famous inventors and the most important thing of all – their minds. With a little bit of ingenuity, participants will construct catapults and forts, and then lay siege, fabricate a winning Egg Drop design, play with a dancing robot and assemble a working light saber to take home. While Thomas Edison said invention is 10 percent inspiration, and 90 percent perspiration; this camp is 100 percent fun.

Geocaching (8 – 12 years old)Geocaching, an elaborate and fun-filled outdoor treasure hunt, is all the rage. With the use of a GPS system, campers will search for trinkets and small surprises at local, established geocaching sites. Most sites will be less than one mile from RCC. Geocaching is challenging, and there is no guarantee that campers will find something every day, but part of the fun is in the search. Campers will receive their own logbooks to keep track of their successes. Participants should bring a filled water bottle, wear comfortable clothing, sturdy shoes, and apply sunscreen prior to coming to camp.

SAT Prep Camp (14 – 18 years old)The Scholastic Achievement Test (SAT) preparatory camp is structured to improve test scores with updated and expanded verbal and math skills instruction. STEAM Camp (8 – 13 years old)STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) is a way to teach how all things relate to each other, in school and in life. It’s more fun than traditional learning and makes more sense to all types of learners because it is based on the natural ways that people learn and are interested in things. For campers who enjoy building, are interested in art, math, and technology, this camp is ideal. Focus will be on the engineering design process, while solving challenges in creative and new ways. Campers will be using engineering design to create different structures. They could be building catapults, bridges, or towers, focusing on the design aspects as well as the artistic appeal. Famous structures and the methods used to engineer them will be covered. Campers will also experience different types of engineering (biological, agricultural, landscaping) to help them better understand the types of engineering and how they are utilized. The

Zen Zone: Late Pick-Up Policy & Fees

Campers must be picked up promptly at the end of the Zen

Zone aftercare program. If a child is not picked up on time, a per-child late fee of $5.00 for every 15 minutes will be

assessed. Payment is due upon pickup and must be paid at

the RCC customer service desk before leaving. If a child is not picked up within 15 minutes of the end of the program,

parents/guardians will be called. If they cannot be contacted, emergency contacts will be called. If contact cannot be

made with parents, guardians or emergency contacts within 30 minutes of the scheduled pickup time, RCC staff will

notify the proper authorities.

Registration Begins May 1! The Coaster Club returns this summer for teens 13 – 18 years old. The group of thrill-seekers will visit Six Flags New Jersey on August 13 and Kings Dominion on August 20.
