TO 2016 SDTC PARTICIPANT

The Challenged Athletes Foundation® (CAF) is proud to have played a pivotal role in not only changing the lives of thousands of challenged athletes, but in changing the world and the way it perceives and accepts those with physical challenges. Twenty-three years have passed, but we are just getting started. What may seem impossible today is just another challenge to be conquered by CAF athletes. And we will be there to support them, every step – or wheel revolution -- of the way. Our goal this year is to surpass that total and provide another unforgettable day of memories at La Jolla Cove.

GET READY! The 23rd Annual Aspen Medical Products San Diego Triathlon Challenge (SDTC) is right around the corner. October 22, 2016 and October 23, 2016 promise to be two spectacular days in La Jolla.

GET SET! Make sure you read all event instructions, thoroughly check your equipment before the event, be sure you are well-trained, and that you max-out your fundraising efforts! All are very important to ensure a successful event and a great SDTC experience!

GO! Watch your fundraising in motion as heroic challenged athletes from around the world gather to display their courage, perseverance and heart. It doesn’t matter if you have one leg or two … if your bike has two wheels or three … or if the eyes you use to see the course belong to someone else. On this day, everyone will face the same challenging course and take part in the same inspiring event!

Joining us this year will be a field of celebrities and pros, who will compete alongside more than 200 world-class challenged athletes. Once again, American heroes will be well-represented, with close to 25 wounded troops from CAF’s Operation Rebound program swimming, biking and running alongside you!

SDTC FEATURES

This year’s Celebration of Abilities dinner and awards presentation will be held at the Irwin M. Jacobs Qualcomm Hall from 6:30 to 9:00 pm on Friday 10/21. It is a chance to celebrate challenged athletes. The Friday evening event will have dinner from 6:30—7:30 pm with the awards presentation following at 7:30 pm.

MAKE YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY PART OF THE DAY

• Have them get involved and get fit at the Kaiser Permanente Thrive 5-K Fitness Walk, a scenic and rewarding walk from La Jolla Cove starting at 11:15 am. Registration is available at http://www.challengedathletes.org/events/kp5k

• Encourage them to register for YMCA of San Diego County Tour de Cove, a stationary cycling marathon. They can participate as an individual by cycling the entire 4.5 hour event or on a team of three for 1.5 hours. Registration is available at

KEEP FUNDRAISING

There is still plenty of time to raise funds and meet – or even exceed – your goals. The Aspen Medical San Diego Triathlon Challenge is all about the amazing challenged athletes supported by CAF and the funds you raise make it possible for these athletes to participate in the sports they love. Log on to http://support.challengedathletes.org/sdtc2016 and discover how quick and easy it is to raise $500, $750 or $1,000 or more! The average grant given by CAF to a challenged athlete is around $1,750, so every little bit helps!

Any person who raises $500 or more over their entry fee will receive a custom CAF jacket. Those going the extra mile and raising $2,500 or more above their entry fee by Oct. 14th will be made members of the CAF “Gold Team” and will be entitled to special benefits.

ENJOY THE EXPERIENCE! Thanks to everyone who has helped CAF deliver on its mission over the past 23 years. We look forward to seeing all of you in La Jolla and to making new friends and memories.

IMPORTANT NOTICEfor SWIMMERS

About Environmental Health Risks

The swim portion of the 2016 San Diego Triathlon Challenge (“Event”) will be conducted in the coastal waters at La Jolla Shores. These waters are subject to “Advisories” and “Closures” by the San Diego County Department of Environmental Health (“DEH”) when the DEH determines that waterborne bacteria or other contaminants pose possible health risks at La Jolla Shores. When such Advisories or Closures are in effect, notices are posted on the DEH website (http://www.sdbeachinfo.com) and, in most cases, on signs posted at the Shores.

If La Jolla Shores is subject to a DEH Closure at the time of the Event, the swim portion of the Event will be cancelled. The bicycle and run portions of the Event will be conducted as scheduled.

If La Jolla Shores is not subject to a DEH Closure at the time of the Event, the swim portion of the Event will be conducted subject to the following:

1. Event participants are responsible to know whether a DEH Advisory is in effect at the time of the Event.2. Event participants must assess their individual susceptibility to health risks that may be posed by waterborne bacteria or other contaminants, and must use their own judgment as to whether they should participate in the swim portion of the Event. Event participants are encouraged to con-sult and follow the advice of their own health professionals if they have any question about whether they should participate in the swim portion of the Event.3. EACH EVENT PARTICIPANT ASSUMES ALL RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH EXPOSURE TO WATERBORNE BACTERIA OR OTHER CONTAMINANTS DURING THE EVENT. EVENT SPONSORS AND ORGANIZERS MAKE NO REPRESENTATIONS OR WARRANTIES CONCERNING THE EXIS-TENCE, NATURE, OR LEVELS OF ANY BACTERIA OR OTHER CONTAMINANTS IN THE WATERS AT LA JOLLA SHORES, OR ANY HEALTH RISKS THAT MAY BE CAUSED BY THEM, AT THE TIME OF THE EVENT. EVENT SPONSORS AND ORGANIZERS SHALL NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY HEALTH ISSUES THAT MAY ARISE FROM SUCH RISKS.

TIMING

The SDTC course features a “challenge” distance consisting of a 1 mile swim, 44 mile bike, and 10 mile run. SDTC uses chip timing to ensure accurate times. Please return your chip at the finish line at the completion of your event.

The Course: REMEMBER, SDTC IS NOT A RACE. THE BIKE PORTION OF THE EVENT IS NON-COMPETITIVE. PLEASE OBEY ALL TRAFFIC SIGNS AND RULES OF THE ROAD. There will be law enforcement on the course checking you are obeying the rules of the road.

The Swim, 1 Mile – You must wear your CAF swim cap*Please note, due to the water quality advisory at the cove, the swim portion of the event will take place on Saturday, Oct 22 at La Jolla Shores.

• For your safety, we will employ wave starts. There will be a total of five swim waves. You will receive your wave start information at registration, and there will be signs on event day to remind you which wave you are in. Each wave will have its own color of swim cap(s). Note: If you do not leave with the wave to which you are assigned, your finish time will not be accurate.

• The first wave will start at 7:30 am.

• The swim will be approximately 1 mile in length.

• The swim course is a triangle. Swim in a counter-clockwise direction, keeping the buoys on your left shoulder at all times.

• There will be lifeguards and other individuals on paddleboards, plus kayakers throughout the course. A lifeguard boat will also be stationed nearby.

• The water temperature on event day could range from 58 - 65 degrees.

• All competitors are strongly encouraged to wear wetsuits.

The Bike, 44 Miles – Place your helmet number on the front of your helmet; the bike number goes on the top tube of your bike frame. Please review the map and turn-by-turns in this packet.

• The event will begins at 8:15 with cyclists leaving in self selected waves.

• Approximately 44 mile bike ride, consisting of city streets and country roads.

• On the course, there are steep graded hills and roads without shoulders.

• Note: Manchester and Camino Del Norte have some rough sections, with little or no bike lane. Cyclists should ride single file for safety. Use caution at all times while on the bike course! The course will be marked with pink directional arrows when turns are required.

• There will be course marshalls at direction changes on the bike course through the La Jolla village area, exiting the Cove, and at key locations along the course.

• There is to be no motor pacing.

• On course bike support from Nytro Multisport bike mechanics in a roving van.

VIP TENT

The VIP Tent has limited space and is intended for CAF’s top sponsors and fundraisers, media and “Gold Team” members. Special credentials and/or wristbands will be issued for access to the VIP Tent.

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS

Though the climate in San Diego is very temperate in late October, the sun can be quite strong. If you have family or other spectators attending the event, please tell them to wear sunscreen and to bring water (or money to buy drinks at the concession stands.) Also, there is very little seating available in the Cove area or at the La Jolla Shores, so spectators might want to bring a folding chair and umbrella to be more comfortable.

Questions? Call Jennifer Rose at the Challenged Athletes Foundation: (858) 210-3515.
