This may or may not only be legend, but I’ve paraphrased this quote for years to describe my feelings when I drink this particular wine. Silky, lush, and sexy are all adjectives that can be used to describe the perception Pinot Noir has on the palate. And it always surprises me that it took a successful movie to popularize this amazingly expressive and versatile wine. But then again, most of you reading this already knew long before Sideways that Pinot Noir is an absolute treasure and gift for the palate. It’s a wine both sturdy and fragile, rich and delicate, an absolute enigma. It’s been called the “Heartbreak” grape for winemakers and growers. It’s been romanticized in books and movies. I don’t know about all of this but I do know one thing – it’s an absolute joy to make, especially when you get it right. Pinot for the masses! (but we’ll keep the best stuff for ourselves, OK?) 2016 provided ideal growing conditions for this early ripening varietal. There was a cool snap during the latter part of the growing season that slowed sugar production but maintained higher acidity levels. The skins continue to mature, thickening and getting darker. This meant that I was able to call the pick in the middle of September, rather than early September. The extra few weeks provided all of the time I needed to make sure we ended up with a richly flavored Pinot. And since all of the vineyards we use to produce this wine could be picked at the same time, were could pre-blend the various lots so they had more time integrate and mesh. Really intense aromatics of pomegranate and Bing cherry with a delicate hint of sexy toasted oak. The attack is all red fruit compote. Thinking it reminds me of a bowl of strawberries, cranberries, and cherry pie filling dusted with a hint of cinnamon. There is a considerable amount of Pinot richness and sweetness as you would expect. The acidity is well balanced and helps preserve the sensation of velvet well into the finish. I can’t think of a better wine to celebrate the holidays, or anything for that matter. I like to serve this with a bit of a chill on it so a few minutes in the fridge shouldn’t be out of the question. As expected, this wine would pair quite well with turkey, ham, salmon, and perhaps a mushroom-laden pasta dish.
